Today, my friend Diana L. Sharples is giving away an autographed copy of her novel Running Lean. She also has some writing advice to share with you.
Advice for Teen Writers
At times I’m reminded of this story when I see some people rush to publish their work, either by submitting it too early or by jumping into self-publishing. And many times the result is one rejection letter after another, or a book that cost a lot of money to produce but isn’t selling. So many teens have asked me, “How do I get published?” My heart goes out to them, because I understand that desire so well! But it’s really the wrong question. I feel a better question should be, “How do I hone my craft so my work is worthy of publication?”
That can be a slower, even harder road, but that tortoise pace may be what’s needed to win the race … because having patience and staying the course will make you a better writer, whether you choose to self publish or submit to a traditional publishing house. Stay the course, and learn to love the journey. You’ll be rewarded with a win in the end.
What fabulous advice! Thanks so much for that, Diana.
Like I said before, Diana is giving away an autographed copy of her book, Running Lean. USA entries only on this one, please. Here's a little bit about the story:
Equilibrium. That’s what Stacey and Calvin found in each other. He is as solid as his beloved vintage motorcycle and helps quiet the constant clamor in Stacey’s mind. She is a passionate, creative spirit—and a lifeline after Calvin’s soldier brother dies.
But lately the balance is off. Calvin’s grief is taking new forms. Voices of self-loathing are dominating Stacey’s life. When struggles with body image threaten her health, Calvin can’t bear to lose another person that he loves. Taking action may destroy their relationship, but the alternative could be much more costly.

ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome! Blessings to you!
DeleteThat's great advice. Whenever I talk about my WIPs, my friends ask me when I'm publishing and it frustrates me to no end. XD
ReplyDeleteI know, right? :) Most people don't know how much effort and dedication it takes to write a novel, much less get published. Keep at it, Katy! Blessings to you.
DeleteI found out about this book a while ago and was interested in it. I forgot about it but I recognized it when I saw the cover. Eep, so exciting ^^
ReplyDeleteAwesome, Lisa! Hope you'll be able to read it! If you don't win a copy tonight, the book is currently just 99 cents for the ebook on Amazon. Blessings to you!

ReplyDeleteThat's great advice! I've never applied that story to writing before but it totally works. Your book sounds incredibly interesting!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lauren! Keep writing and growing, and blessings to you!
DeleteI like the book cover! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ashley! There's a cool story about the cover. The publisher found the photograph on a stock photography site, and the only name they had was the photographer's. We didn't know who the model was. After the book was published, though, the girl's mother found me on Facebook. They were so excited! If I can ever get up to the city where they live, I would love to do a book signing with the model. Blessings to you!
DeleteOh!! This book sounds so good!! Contemporary YA is one of my favorite genres ^.^
ReplyDeleteYAY!!! It's my fav as well. And I love "meeting" my readers (and potential readers) this way. Keep writing, Jennifer! Blessings to you!
DeleteOne day, I hope to hone my work until it is worthy of publication. It's a good way to look at the whole writing process. ^.^
ReplyDeleteI hope one day I'll be picking up one of your books, Rachel! Keep writing! Blessings to you.
DeleteHello, Diana! What fantastic advice! I, too, think one of the biggest mistakes you can make in anything, but specifically publishing, is to rush into it. Slow and steady is definitely the most stable path! :)
ReplyDeleteAs for your book, I'm a sucker for romances. And I sense a great deal of character depth in that synopsis!
Thanks, Rachelle! There was so much more I could have said, like finding a great critique group (where Jill Williamson and I met!), and attending writers conferences.Networking with other writers makes the journey easier and way less lonely.
DeleteHope you'll be able to read my book! Blessings to you!
Wow, this book discretion sounds very interesting. Thank you for hosting the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure! Hope you'll have a chance to read the book. Keep writing, and blessings to you!

DeleteSounds intriguing! My sister struggled with depression for a little while, not body image or the death of a sibling, but other stuff, so the topic is one that hits close to home.
ReplyDeleteEmily, it sounds like your sister is much better now, and for that I'm very grateful. It is my belief that the biggest problem facing teens today is self-esteem, and that works out into so many other areas. My wish is to help them see the worthiness in themselves through my writing. Blessings to you!
