Go write something!

Stephanie here. If there's anything that rivals my love for writing, it's talking about writing. Can you relate?

Maybe that's why the first time I read On Writing by Stephen King, I laughed out loud at his words:

"I'll be as brief as possible, because your time is valuable and so is mine, and we both understand that the hours we spend talking about writing is time we don't spend actually doing it."
There's of course a lot of value in reading craft books, brainstorming with writer friends, absorbing articles or podcasts on the craft, and deconstructing stories.

That is, there's a lot of value in it if you put it to use by sitting down and writing using what you've learned.

Your time is valuable! Today, I challenge you (and me!) to write more than you talk about writing.

  1. Amen!! I'm in the editing/researching agents stage, so I find I talk so much more about writing, editing, etc. than actually doing it. My writing time is incredibly small right now because of school and life, so I need to seize whatever chances I have to write.

Thank you for this reminder, Mrs. Morrill!

    1. I'm in the editing stage right now, too, Linea. However, I don't think I'm ready to start researching agents to query, although I still do. Sometimes I procrastinate writing by looking for my dream agents, which is pretty crazy if I'm not even ready to submit yet. :) Good luck with querying and researching agents!

  2. I love this. I have days where I talk so much more about writing than I do actually writing that sometimes it's enough push for someone just to put it so simply and say, "go write something!" There's no magic trick to getting words on the page, you just have to do it--inspiration helping you out or not.

  8. Gosh, this post hit me hard. I spend so much time thinking about writing, reading about writing, and even writing about writing (as in blog posts about writing), that I don't even have time to sit down and work on my WIP. Thanks for this reminder. I must not forget to keep my dream of publication in mind because that will help me battle procrastination.

  9. That quote is currently posted up on my wall. XD I've got maybe two chapters left of my WIP's first draft and have been holding off on figuring things out. Better get a move on!

  12. Hahaha! I need to do this. I'm currently writing a novel and so this reminds me I haven't written anything today.

  13. Definitely have this problem! Usually talking about writing is so enjoyable that I find that I invest a lot of time in talking about it instead of writing the actual thing. I usually get distracted by the internet or awesome blogs (YEAH) posting on my own blog (about writing! :P) And email, and of course the writers arch enemy and time sucker, flappy bird. I am actually getting dis........... tracted right now!
