April Word War: Day 1

Stephanie here! With Camp NaNo going on this month, many of you have asked if Go Teen Writers could host a word war. We thought this was a great idea! So we'll have new word war posts up today through Friday that we hope will encourage you in your writing challenge.

Of course, you don't have to be participating in NaNo to join in the word warring fun. Here's how this works:

What it is: A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.

This word war begins today and will end Friday night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's never too late to join!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:

1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. Or you can challenge each other to word wars. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot me an email telling me so that I can approve you pronto.)

Looking forward to a fun day!

  1. Sadly, I probably won't be able to participate. I've just now started outlining my next WIP, and I fear that word warring now will get the book off track.

Thanks for hosting the word war, though! It'll be fun to see how far everyone else gets in their WIPs.

  2. Ooh, this is awesome. I just finished writing my 50k for Camp NaNo two days ago, but I still haven't finished my novel, so this should be really helpful. I can't word war right at this moment, but hopefully I'll be available later this afternoon.

  4. I really want to war, but there is a ton of studying I should be doing for finals. Plus, I'm in the editing stage right now anyway.
    Have fun, everyone!

  8. I'll probably be able to participate this afternoon/evening, as I have a few things that I need to write. However, While I probably do have time right now, no one else seems to be available, and I'm using the time to edit instead. So ... see you guys this afternoon when I get home from work?

  23. 1189 words so far today, thanks to a 30,000 goal for Camp. Sadly, I don't think I can hold that pace this week, seeing as it's week 3 (read: writer's block).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great job, Ellie! Awesome, in fact, considering Writer's Block. You can push through it, though, I know!

      Delete
    2. Thanks, Athelas! Yeah, the writer's block has really been starting to take its toll this week, but I think I have a game plan for the last ten days of Camp NaNo. Assuming my main character doesn't decide to take another path. Maybe literally, as she's currently on a quest where one wrong turn could ruin everything . . .

      Delete
    3. Yeah, my week for writer's block was last week... Hopefully I don't get another go at it this month. :p Heh... *scolds character* Stick to the script, if you wouldn't mind.

      Delete
    4. Writer's block stinks. Mine's been amping it up lately, too. It's every writer's nightmare. I hope you get back into your story soon!

      Delete
    5. I managed to find the scene that I wanted to write, so I'm back on track for now, but it won't last. My Camp NaNo cabin mates and I have been role playing our characters for a couple days, which helped a lot. Yelling at my protagonist turned out to be surprisingly fun. She really hates me after what I've put her through...

      Delete
  24. Nice Ellie! Ugh I'm sorry about the writer's block. Keep going though! I'm sure you'll figure it out.
I (finally) just reached the 40,000 word mark on the novel I worked on for Camp last July (it kinda sat around for a loooong time...but I'm working on it again!).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you Katie! And that's pretty impressive . . . I was going to work on my novel from November but turns out, it's awful, so I switched to my other WIP. I can't leave a novel alone for more than a month or I'll start to hate it.

      Delete
    2. Thanks! I understand that. It was kinda hard getting back into this one.

      Delete
    3. I was convinced that I had an awesome story . . . but one of the protagonists has zero personality, and the dialogue is AWFUL. There were way too many problems for me to bother continuing, but I got one good character out of it, at least.

      Delete
    4. At least you got a character from it, and I bet you learned from it too! Maybe someday you'll go back to it and see it's not as bad as you thought :)

      Delete
    5. I definitely learned from it. Doing NaNo always teaches you something...And I think I'll be putting Tessa into another novel, she was a lot of fun to write about. I recycle my characters constantly. So with any luck, she'll be back in a future story.

      Delete
    6. That's good! I did NaNo for the first time last July and loved it. Definitely doing it again this summer.

      Delete
    7. NaNo rocks! I did the November NaNo program five years in a row, starting when I was nine (they have a separate kids program, so it wasn't 50,000) and I'll be back this fall for 50K. Right now I'm working on my first Camp session and loving it, so I plan to do the July one.

      Delete
  25. I'm done for today folks, with a total of 1625 words. Not that bad, but I hope to do better tomorrow. Have fun word warring! I hope you all reach your goals of the day.
