The New Go Teen Writers Rewards

3/10/2014 Update: Go Teen Writers Rewards is currently closed and will reopen at an undetermined date.

by Stephanie Morrill

Stephanie writes young adult contemporary novels and is the creator of GoTeenWriters.com. Her novels include The Reinvention of Skylar Hoyt series (Revell) and the Ellie Sweet books (Playlist). You can connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and check out samples of her work on her author website.

On the survey, many of you indicated that you were interested in us offering more opportunities for critiques. So are we! Back in May, many of you may recall, Jill and I tested out a program called the Go Teen Writers Points Store. We've decided to revamp that program, and keep it open all the time in hopes that we can critique more often for you.

How Go Teen Writers Rewards Works

  1. You do something that helps me and Jill promote our books and/or you participate in Go Teen Writers events.
  2. As you earn points, you send me an email (Stephanie(at)StephanieMorrillBooks.com) detailing what you did. I will note it on a spreadsheet that my wonderful, spreadsheet-loving, rocket-scientist husband helped me build.
  3. I will email you a confirmation along with an updated amount of how many points are in your account.
  4. When you're ready, you may cash in your points for the items listed below.

What You Can Do With Your Points
  • Earn critiques - from one page of your book to multiple chapters. You can also redeem points for query letter critiques.
  • Have a video chat with me and Jill. We can help you brainstorm your idea or talk about next steps you can take in your writing.

How You Earn Points (This is an overview. A full list can be found here.)

Participating in Go Teen Writers events:
When you respect your dream of being a writer by participating in Go Teen Writers events, you'll have the chance to earn rewards points. For example, those who complete the 100 for 100 writing challenge will automatically earn 30 rewards points.

Promoting Go Teen Writers
You can earn points by doing things like:
  • Having the Go Teen Writers button on your blog
  • Purchasing a copy of Go Teen Writers: How to Turn Your First Draft Into a Finished Book
  • Asking your library to carry the book.
  • Talking about Go Teen Writers on your social media sites

Supporting our novels
This includes things like:
  • Purchasing ebooks or new copies of any of Jill's or my novels.
  • Promoting our books on social media sites.
  • Recommending our books to your friends.
  • Pinning our book covers to your Pinterest sites
Questions You May Have

I don't live in the U.S. Can I still participate?
Absolutely!

I already earned points back in May. What happens to those?
They're still there, and you can still use them! If you don't remember how many you've earned, send me an email and I'll look it up for you.

I bought your book in July. Can I still earn points for that?
Absolutely.

I did a few things in May to earn points, like subscribe to your author newsletter. Can I get points for stuff like that again under the rewards program?
No, if you've already earned points for doing something like following us on Twitter, you can't earn points for it again. If you, however, you follow us but haven't received points for it, that can count.

I need more details about basically everything you just said.
I figured! Here's a link to more details.

I'll also be answering questions in the comments section!

  1. Totally awsome Stephanie! I just purchased both of your Ellie books yesterday, and I plan to buy Captives a.s.a.p.!!! (I'm on chap. 5 in book 1, and it is soooo good! :D) This is really cool. So we send you what we've done in an email...?

    1. I'm so glad you're liking it, TW! And, yes. At the bottom of this page there's a mock email: http://goteenwriters.blogspot.com/p/go-teen-writers-rewards.html

  2. Hmm I'll probably need to email you soon. I can't remember anymore how many points I had from last time. Anyway, it's so great you are putting this in. Amazing, thank you!

One question about the back cover copy, is that the same as it was last time, cause I think it was worded differently then, if I'm not mistaken. Something like a one page written out story line of the story

    1. Er, this is not exactly an answer or something, but you told me once that you wanted to help or read something from my writing ;-) Would you still like to do that? If so, can I send you an e-mail or something? If you not want to share your mailadress, this is mine: arende98@gmail.com. Thanks! (And if there are any other Dutchies out here: you're welcome!)

    2. Arlette, yes, it was worded differently last time. In the survey, there were lots of people who asked for more opportunities for pitching their novel so they could get practiced. So when I was thinking through what we would offer with rewards points, my mind went to marketing copy.

    3. And I'm glad to see the two of you connecting here. That's awesome :)

    4. Thank you for clearing that up Stephanie! And I've dropped you a mail Arende :)

  3. This is will be nice! Thanks!
:) I think I've bought all of Jill's books, except for To Darkness Fled. So, yeah.... :)

I'll have to think about asking my library to carry Go Teen Writers.

    1. By the way, I noticed you said if we bought new copies of Jill's or your books. So would that include books I already own too? Or does it have to be newly released books?

    2. It means buying them new as opposed to picking it up for 25-cents at a garage sale - great question!

    3. Ok. So the books I have would count.

  4. I'm so excited!! Thank you so much Stephanie! I missed the rewards program last time around and I'm really glad you're bringing them back.

  5. Yeah! So do the points that we got back in May expire at the end of the month anyway? I know I should have already cashed them in, but I'm still editing . . . (It takes me a really long time to edit.)

    1. Technically they were set to expire in June of next year, but that won't happen now. And there's no reason why you should have cashed them in already :)

  6. O my, I don't write my stories in English (yet) but a video chat would be so so SO great! Hopefully I can get enough points... A few questions, though:

    - Can we promote the GTW-book as well?
    - I have the GTW book, but I don't have the recipe anymore. However, I can prove that I have the book and that I got it from the Book Depository. Is that oké?
    - Can you earn this points forever? I mean: Last May, you could only earn points in May.

    1. Yes, promotions of Go Teen Writers book and blog are included in the Go Teen Writers Rewards program. I made a somewhat ridiculous list of everything I could think of that could count towards points: http://goteenwriters.blogspot.com/p/go-teen-writers-rewards.html

      Yes, that's totally fine, Arende.

As of now, Go Teen Writers Rewards is open until an undefined date. If it completely takes over my life (or if nobody is using it) then we'll figure something else out :)

  7. Spiffydoodles. I never emailed you back in May, so I'll have to do that sometime soon. I might actually have enough points to get something now.

  8. Oh cool!
Okay so question. I never got into the point system last time because I didn't have time, but how far back can I count points. Like I started following the blog and Facebook a year ago. Would that count?

  9. This is going to be so great, Stephanie!

  10. This is going to be amazing! I can't wait to get started earning those points. :)

  11. I often mention Go Teen Writers in blog posts of mine, though the post is not all about it. Then I link to this cite. Can that earn points?

    1. Ooh, good question. I think that could be worth 5 points or so. Assuming you're not linking to our blog and making lists of everything you hate about us :)

    2. That made me snort my water. Thanks for that :)

  12. Oh cool. I guess I must no have paid attention last time you held one of these because I don't remember it. Does it still count if I follow you on blogspot?

  13. Another question (yeah, me again...) Do translated novels (Skylar Hoyt) you've bought count as well? Maybe for some less points?

  16. I'm in Chicago for the weekend for work (I'm actually about to head down to breakfast and see Jill!) so I'm a bit slow on email and responding to comments. Just wanted you to know that it'll probably be Monday before you get a response from me.

  17. This is awesome! I bought your Go Teen Writers book at the OYAN Summer Workshop in June. Does that count, even though it was in June? And do I need to scan in a receipt?

    1. Yes, it counts, Kristin :) Did they do receipts there?

  18. I tried to click on the link to the more detailed list of how to get points and it said the page didn't exist any more. Is this on purpose, or an error? Is Go Teen Writers Rewards still up?

    1. That because it temporarily closed on February 28th. It will reopen at a later, still undetermined date :)
