It's not writing that's hard, it's sitting down.

I don't know about you all, but sometimes I will spend a lot of time whining (either in my head or to anyone who will listen) about how little time I'm getting to write. "If only I had writing time," I'll say.

And then writing time will get handed to me, and... Well, haven't I been meaning to clean up my office? Shouldn't I call and get McKenna signed up for ballet? I really should print out that recipe before I forget...

Maybe that's why this quote struck a nerve:

Once I get my Word document open and my focus on my story, then I could write all day. It's just pushing myself past the distractions that's tricky.

What about you? Do you find yourself struggling to sit down and then fine once you've started writing? Or no?

    1. I have days like that too. The only thing that works well for me is setting my timer. It really helps keep me focused.

  2. I so totally agree with you, Stephanie! Yep, I certainly find myself struggling to sit down, it's harder than the writing itself for sure! But since CampNaNo started today, I should find some time and motivation ;-)

  3. Sitting down is no problem, but feeling lost and overwhelmed is.
Need to remind myself to break down the story into small manageable steps (writing scenes usually helps). :)

    1. That's a hard skill to master. You're right, you just have to learn how to think through one scene at a time.

    2. I think I can relate. I tend to get so caught up in writing towards the bigger picture that sometimes I get discouraged by how long it takes to get there. I usually end up missing minor yet important details while racing to get to the conflict. And sometimes it the other way around, lawl I spend so time trying to amend my previous mistake by thinking of the minor details I missed and working out how to write them that I never actually write them. It gets real frustrating for me

  4. I agree, most certainly- and this is another reason why I love nanowrimo. (I started camp nanowrimo July this AM :) It 'forces' you to sit down and do it.

  5. True. :) Though for the last few days, I've been writing for about an hour in the mornings and I can kind of make myself do that. Yay!
(Totally unrelated personal announcement: I LOVE writing prompts! I've only been doing them lately and it is SO nice to just write and not worry about the big picture. So, anyway, if you haven't tried them, I think you should. :) ) Btw, I love Goteenwriters! :)

    1. So glad you've found something that works for you, Sofia! And I agree. Writing prompts are great for expanding our creativity.

  6. You've hit the nail on the head. I get busy doing something, I think... "Maybe I should write... well... I can do that later." And then I don't. So, I should definitely attempt to overcome that, and when I do sit down to write, don't let anything else distract me.

  7. I find that sitting down is easy, because I'm usually excited to get going on my WIP. What's hard for me is to actually start writing. I can't seem to find the right words for what I'm trying to portray most of the time, and its hard to get started because of that. But once I get started, I can write for a long time.

    1. I'm similar, Lucia. I start out stumbling around a bit, but if I stick with it for a few minutes then I can get in a groove.

  8. YES. THAT. IS. SO. TRUE. I really like that. :)
I guess it really depends on how I'm feeling about my WIP . . . XD

    1. Very true, Koko. There are days when I'm so excited nothing can stand in my way!

  9. This is very true. What I have found that helps me is to either sign up for Camp NaNoWriMo or NaNoWriMo or to participate in a word war or word sprint. Each of these things is very helpful in motivating me to sit down and write.

  11. I'm fine once I start writing, but not necessarily when I sit down...sitting down at a computer and working on a novel there are different endeavors entirely. *coughs* internet browsing *coughs*

  12. My EXACT problem! I could literally write so much if there wasn't so many distractions and if I was more focused. :) So glad you posted this!

  13. Can't bring myself to start up on my novel...Noooooooooo!

  14. Sitting down is easy... But the internet is the hard part. I. Get. So. Distracted. (Here I am commenting under this post instead of writing, which was what I originally planned to do. *sigh*)
