We're closed for Labor Day!

Stephanie here. Today is Labor Day in America. I bet it's a rare American who can tell you what Labor Day is actually about. I finally looked it up last year because I was tired of saying that I didn't know. And then I promptly forgot about it because I had to look it up again this year:

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September, that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. It was first nationally recognized in 1894 to placate unionists following the Pullman Strike. With the decline in union membership, the holiday is generally viewed as a time for barbeques and the end of summer vacations.

My daughter started back to school a few weeks ago, but for Connor today is, indeed, the last day of summer vacation. We'll be enjoying the pool one last time, grilling hot dogs, and wearing all our white before the fashion police come after us tomorrow.

Go Teen Writers will be open again tomorrow!

    2. I'm homeschooled too. We started on June 30th, or something like that :) I never pay attention to the no-white rule either XD

    3. Some school for me as well! My family started a few weeks ago officially, but we did school all summer except for the last two weeks. :P

What is this about "no white" anyway? Never heard that.

    4. We've done a few days of school, but we officially start tomorrow. Homeschooling is a good way to get ahead on some things!

  5. I start on the 4th. It's my first year of high school so I'm half nervous and half excited. The no white rule? Huh?

    1. Old fashion customs say "No wearing white after Labor Day." I've never bothered with it. I also don't own much white.
Congrats on starting high school! I'm a sophomore, but at a brand new school, so I kind of get how you feel. I started a week ago.

  6. My kids start school tomorrow! My son is going into 7th grade, to the 7-12 school! I'm in mourning of his rapidly passing childhood, yet excited to have a quiet house again! Have a lovely last day of summer!

    1. I feel ya, Mama. This is Connor's last year of preschool (we think, anyway) and I've definitely felt a sense of, "I can't wait for school to start so I can write," and, "School starting back up means he's growing up!"

  7. For the most part, I think it's only those ages 75 and up who won't wear white between Labor Day and Memorial Day. When I lived in Florida, that fashion "rule" felt especially ridiculous since my very cute white skirt was comfortable year round.
