Lloyd Alexander on Shoes... er... Writing Fantasy

by Jill Williamson

As I plow on toward the finish line of King's Folly, this quote makes me smile.

What kind of shoes are you wearing right now as you work on your book? Combat boots? High heels? Sneakers? Ballet shoes? Cleats? Cowboy boots?

  1. Good quote. :) My MC is wearing ratty old running shoes at the moment, but she's wishing for boots. BTW, I'm closing in on the finish line as well! I'm pretty sure I'll be finished by Monday. :D

  2. Haha. It's six in the morning here and I'm curled up in my favorite chair, writing. So, I'm barefoot.

  3. This is adorable! I love Lloyd Alexander, and the quote made me smile this morning. Thanks! (and I prefer to go barefoot, thanks.)

  4. Hehe. I like that quote. My MCs at the time are all wearing boots, since they just finished a battle. I, on the other hand, just have fuzzy socks on, and when I write, I'll probably have normal socks and slippers on.
That's awesome that you're almost done with King's Folly!

  5. Socks, warm and cozy in my little writerly bedroom. I never wear shoes for writing, as I do it all in my bedroom, and bedroom=socks. :-P

  6. My MC, Rain wears soft, leathery boots for most of my book (first draft anyway). While writing, I'm either wearing fluffy socks, or am just barefoot :P

  10. I usually go about my day barefooted, so when I am writing I am barefooted too. :) But my MC on the other hand normal wears boots, Brown riding books that go up to right below her knee.
I have never heard this quote before, but it is kind of funny. :) Thanks for sharing!

  11. No shoes. I'm usually barefoot, occasionally when it's really cold I will wear socks :)

  12. Never though about my MC's shoes before! But, I think Dorlin Hull wears boots, personally tailored for him as an assassin. Leather, hard and unyielding for battle. And with a magical tracking signal so his master knows what he's up too.

I, on the other hand, am wearing nothing but socks, curled up on the bed, And probably be barefoot when I write. Also curled up on the bed. LOL

    2. Thanks a lot, Emily! Yeah, funny how much trouble a pair of shoes can get you in. That tracking signal idea just jumped put at me while I was writing the comment :).

P.S. - Are you by any chance on Google Hangout? Just 'cause I wanted to make some new writing friends out there and no better place to start, right?

  13. My MC wears flats at the moment.
I like to wear slippers when I write. Because I don't like socks. I don't know why. XD

  14. My main characters wear old shoes that are cheaply made of leather or something:)
I don't actually wear shoes while writing, I'm always at home.

  15. Multi colored sparkly TOMS. I adore these shoes and wear them way to often. :-)

  16. I'm currently going hobbit style - barefoot. I need to put on some shoes and socks though, since my toes are cold, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

  17. Combat boots for my MC... red toms for me :)

  18. I wear Ironman style rocket boots!

No...I wear socks. Someday I will learn to write barefoot, immersing myself in the story world- feeling every stone, field, mud puddle and floor.

  19. Fuzzy socks are a must have writing tool for me. Cold toes means cold brain.
My MC wears working boots though, so I suppose I could take a page out of her book (ha! Punny) and wear useful shoes.

  20. Um, I'm barefoot. Kiwi style, ya know! :)

My characters all wear leather boots,

  21. I am wearing sneakers, which are wetter than I would like due to having walked across campus about twenty minutes ago.

  22. I don't wear shoes in the house, but I wear fuzzy socks! xP They make my feet very comfortable in the winter weather.

  23. I'm rocking socks right now. As of yet, I'm not convinced my MC has feet. Will report back!

  24. Barefoot! and my character is wearing ling lace up leather boots.

  25. I never wear shoes for writing... It's more confortable to curl up on the couch with your world and soak it in:) My MC is wearing.... let me ask him.... He says he's just wearing socks:)

  26. Socks today because it's actually been slightly chilly (yeah...it is possible in Florida), but usually barefoot for me. Yay homeschooling! I actually have a neighbor who sees me often and has remarked once or twice, "I don't think I've ever seen you with shoes on." Haha! Loved reading these comments! :)

And I never pay attention to what my charries are wearing on their feet...rarely what they're wearing even :P

  27. I'm wearing sparkly slippers. I rarely wear shoes when I'm writing since I'm usually curled up on the couch.

  28. Combat boots. Most definitely black combat boots with laces that are too long and always come undone

  29. None! I'm one of those girls that goes barefoot whenever she can get away with it. :-) (Or unless I'm already wearing shoes, in which case they're just black dress shoes.)

  30. Haha, cool quote! I actually never wear shoes while writing, but that's just because I prefer to be barefoot in general. I'll wear socks if it's cold, though.

  31. Hi, I'm new here, but I'm glad I found you. Lots of amazing resources!

I'm at the starting line with a new project, but even so, I'm in socks. :) Would much rather be barefoot, but as it's January on the frozen flatland I need to protect myself from frostbite. As for my MC, she would probably wear a nice (but not too nice), perfectly serviceable pair of button-up boots.
