Is the selfie a cry for attention or an empowering form of self-expression? Write the Worldwants to hear your thoughts! Our new writing competition for high school students is now open. Write a 750 -1,000 word op-ed about the phenomenon of the Selfie. You could write the piece for or against, or show both sides of the argument. And did we mention there will be cash prizes? Sorry-- second culture moment-- what exactly is a Selfie?
ReplyDeleteDeVall Girls, a selfie is a picture that someone takes of themselves with a phone or handheld camera and generally speaking, posts on social media for mass consumption. Hope that helps!
DeleteIt used to be that, if you wanted a picture of yourself, you asked somebody to take a picture of you. Or, a few talented people (who could point their bulky camera with accuracy at arms length) took their own portrait. However, with the rise of modern technology, it became very easy to take pictures of yourself. The next thing I knew, they were called "selfies" and it seemed that everybody was posting self-snap-shots all over internet (facebook, instagram, and so on).
DeleteSo, the question is: Why do YOU think people are so eager to take their own picture and post it for the world to see? :)
I just want to note that on their website it says 750-1000 words. :)

ReplyDeleteThis looks fun! (Wish I could have known sooner, though, so I could have turned it in for the proofread date) I'm thinking about trying it, because my view probably goes against most's. (#hateonselfies) I'm curious at how formal the piece is. First POV? Thesis with supporting, transitioning paragraphs?

There you will find a document called "Sample op-ed outline (PDF)" which should have exactly what you're looking for. Also, if you don't have time to submit something for this competition, we will be announcing a brand new competition on March 30th!
