April Word War Day 5! THE END.

Shannon here!

I have the glorious privilege of waving you through on the last day of our April WORD WAR! I've been following your comments and LOVE the dedication and crazy competitiveness of your battling keyboards.

So keep going. Fight to the end! You can do it!
You can't see me, but I'm ready for battle and cheering you on. Kind of like William Wallace.

So, you know. Get going or my face will freeze like this and aint nobody wanting that.

What it is: A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.

This word war began on Monday and will end tonight, Friday. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's never too late to join!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:

1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. Or you can challenge each other to word wars. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot Stephanie an email so she can approve you pronto.)

Let's finish strong, friends!

  1. I had a Brilliant Burst of Inspiration last night in the form of a bandit attach and an Author's smirk. So my total for the word war so far is up to 7664 words. Still not amazing . . . but not as terrible as it would've been either.

  2. It's been soo much fun this week! The people are awesome and I actually got some considerable work done on my story, from which I'd been taking a rather unplanned break due to drained creative juices.

  3. One more day! Y'all are doing great--keep it up!!

  4. Word wars have really motivated me this week, and I've managed to furiously write 3,519 words. My word count isn't amazing, but I am very impressed myself, having been swamped with school work this week. I'm at one of the points in my WIP when I've done a previously long planned scene and now I'm in the aftermath with no new scene plan. :) I'm sure some inspiration will hit me soon!

  5. Thanks for warring with me guys! I only warred yesterday, but I got 1995 words in, so I couldn't be happier!!! :D
And keep up the good work everyone, you all were amazing.

  6. Everyone is doing awesome! :D And it's our last day of word warring (kind of sad :)), so I'm hoping to make the most of it! :) The word wars have definitely helped and pushed me closer to my goal for Camp NaNo; I was able to get over 1K in yesterday and over 7K since Monday. Thank you all so much for hosting this! :)

Looking forward to warring today! :D

  7. These word wars was have really kicked my writing slump out the door. Which is good because I'm really behind on Camp NaNo...
Thanks for doing these. Can't wait to war with you guys (:

      Delete
    27. Jonathan: Wow, his sword grows? What an awesome sword! xD *scolds autocorrect*

      Delete

      Delete
    33. Good job, Jonathan! XD

I'm about 5,000 words behind on my Camp NaNoWriMo wordcount... I'm going to try and write 3,000 today before I do anything else on the computer. That's the most I've ever written on one day.

Yeah, that's where it stopped. So interesting, right? :P

      Delete
    46. Thanks for the wars too, Faith, and all of you!

      Delete

    52. Welcome, Patience! :-)

Shall we begin at :50 and go for ten minutes?

    53. Patience: You found it before I could push "Publish Comment." xD *waves sword* *mounts horse* *grabs lance* On second thought... *drops everything* *grabs computer*

      That time sounds good, Faith!

    57. Sorry guys, my laptop shut down suddenly and then it had to to a bunch of updates because of that system restore...and then it shut down again.
And again, and again, and again, and again.
I really need to get it fixed.

My brains are fried, anyway. I'm gonna do some unimportant stuff and turn in. It's night where I live :p. Well, morning now...4:30 in the morning. Woot. Good luck warring guys! It was fun writing with you. Again, good luck!

      Delete
    58. Ahh, did the sight of my own horse and lance dismay thee, Athelas? ;D But honestly, your last comment had me laughing so hard, I had a hard time writing at the beginning! ;D

138 words, with a last sentence of: I gave a little laugh as the door closed.

How did you do, Faith? :)

      Delete
    59. 266. Last sentence: No one was visible.

Good morning, Jonathan. :-) Thanks for the Word Wars, and sleep well.
I can;t imagine writing well at that time... It's six o'clock in the evening here.

      Delete
    60. Great job, Faith! :D

Sorry about all the laptop issues, Jonathan. Wow, four in the morning?! Yes, get some sleep. :)

      Delete
    61. Want to do another? Say, :15 to :25?

      Delete
    62. Could we do another for 15 minutes perhaps? :)

      Delete
    63. Yep, and goo! :D

      Delete
    64. Actually... I have to drop out. I need to go take a shower, 'cause I'm going somewhere tomorrow.
      Thanks for the wars!

      Delete
    65. Totally understand, Faith. :) *bids you an affectionate farewell* Thank you for warring with me! :)

And I got 247, but I believe I warred alone. ;) My last complete sentence: Without a word, he turned and went back outside.

      Delete
    66. Well done! :-) Shalom!
      *scampers off*

      Delete
    67. Aw, thanks! Shalom! :)

    68. Aww, thank you, Shannon! :) We really appreciate you all hosting the word war. :D

  10. This is the last day of the Word War, writers. Let's make it epic. Way more epic than the whopping 29 comments and few word wars that are here now.

    1. AMEN!!! You go, Athelas! Let's do it, guys - epic!! :D

      Delete
    2. Yes. *nods* Let's get 300 comments. xD And lots of words.

      Delete
    3. Major, crazy, cool, epic rocking going on right now.

      Delete
  11. I have to do a few things, and then I'll be on here shortly for some word wars. :) I've been sidetracked by Scrivener - I got a coupon for it with winning NaNo -- and I've been checking it all out. *sheepish grin* Yeah, I need to get those words in though for Camp NaNo! ;D I'll be ready to word war in a bit here. :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I still haven't checked out Scrivener... One of these days, I'll actually use the coupon I acquire. xD When you are ready to war, I stand here waiting to challenge ye. *bows*

      Delete
    2. Yes, it took me forever to as well! ;D That sounds great, Athelas! I shall be more than happy to meet thee on the battlefield. :)

      Delete
    3. K. M. Weiland had a webinar on Scrivener for free that I couldn't pass up on, and I fell in love while watching it. ;D

      Delete
    4. Do you like it so far? Excellent. Prepare thy sword, O Brave Warrior, for nary of these warriors who will war may be faint of heart.

      Delete
    5. Well, I just got my current document imported into it, and I've only done a little bit of messing around in it, but so far I like it! :) One thing I didn't like is that it must do word count differently than Word, because I have 500 words less in Scrivener. So . . . I'm finishing Camp NaNo with Word. ;) *sharpens my sword* I shall, fellow Warrior, for I know by experience that thou dost wage fierce war on this battlefield.

      Delete
    6. You've got that right, Patience! Athelas is like a word ninja. ;D

      Delete
    7. Amazing how she does that! ;D

      Delete
    8. I'm ready to war! :)

      Delete
    9. Heh... heh... heh. *hides records of all terrible word wars*
We're warring up there. *points above* :D

      Delete
    10. Are there any records? ;D

      Delete
    11. There are painfully many records. :p

      Delete
    12. Aww, I don't think so. :)

      Delete
    13. I think everyone has some terrible word wars. :-P I know I do.

      Delete
    14. Mine are horrible!

      Delete
    15. They are not. :-P
Well, I'm sure a few of them are, but a few of everyone's are. :-P You put out a good number of words, though.

      Delete
    16. Aww, thank you, Faith! :)

      Delete
    17. For the record, I lost half my life to Scrivener. Maybe we'll have to get Jill to do a workshop on it or something. It baffles me.

      Delete
    18. Oh dear. ;) I've heard it can be very confusing! Does Jill use Scrivener then?

      Delete
  12. I haven't had a lot of time to write this week, sadly, but in the spare moments that I could get in, i totaled up to somewhere around two thousand words. Because of this weeks schedule, thats pretty amazing for me. However, I still can't understand how, during NaNoWriMo, I had time to write 1.5K a day. I'm hoping to get a bit more in by tonight!

    1. You can do it! :D

    2. Good luck, Anonymous. :-) You can come up and Word War if you like. We're warring on the long string up there.

      Delete
    3. GOOD JOB! 2k is PROGRESS and that's what we're hoping for here.

    4. Okay! I'll just start late! :P

    10. Beautiful job, Liv! :) *high fives to you both*

      Delete
    11. Great job, Liv! :)

    15. I'll join on the next one, guys. :) My siblings needed me and my internet is acting up.

      Delete
    16. 339 words, last sentence: "Sometimes she would even go and play with the children herself, letting them believe that she, too, was one of their imaginary friends."

      Delete
    17. Okay, Patience! :)

So, how did you do, Liv? Did you join us, Mary?

      Delete
    18. Excellent job you all! :D

      Delete
    19. Whoops I meant to reply that:)

I got 321, with a last sentence of "I shook my head"

      Delete
    20. I have to go for now, but I should be back soon!

      Delete
    21. Okay, Liv! :)

So, is anyone else up for a Word War?

      Delete
    22. I will, Natasha! :)

      Delete

    26. Alrighty, I got 120 words, and my last complete sentence is: "But that comment set things rolling in a horrible direction, and before we knew it, conflict had arisen."

      How did you do? :)

      Delete
    27. Wow, great job! I was stuck and thinking way too much--I'm feeling my way through most of this section. ;) That's a sweet sentence!

      Delete
    28. Thanks! :D And that's okay! Sometimes you just need to think about what you're doing. I found myself doing that a good bit during my rough draft. I'm not working on my rough draft at the moment, you see. I'm working on some background for my characters. :)

      Delete
    29. You want to do another? :) This time for 15 minutes perhaps, beginning at the :30?

      Delete
    30. *Nods.* Okay. :) It'll not take me that long to get my water. :)

      Delete
    31. Yes, you're right. :) And yes, mine's a first draft. I feel like I'm finding my way through a thick forest, only able to see the first couple steps in front of me. :) Ooh, that sounds like fun! :) Did you get your drink of water? Ready for the war? :D

      Delete
    32. Haha, that's a good way to put working on a first draft! Are you a pantser, then? I tried to do outlining for mine, and I got a good bit done! And then I got past where I had been working on, and I wound up with more than a few surprises from my characters. :P I eventually couldn't take the lack of organization anymore, and wound up doing background work instead.

And, yes, I am ready. Go? A few seconds late? :P

      Delete
    33. 433 words, last sentence: "She ran through any number of plans in her head, and she knew then that she had to find the girl's parents in the Mindscape."

    34. I thought it was for fifteen minutes! :)

      Delete
    35. It most certainly is! :) Do you want to war?

      Delete
    36. Sure. I'm not quite sure how to do this....

      Delete
    37. I got 380 words, and here's the last sentence: A headache began pulsing behind my eyes, and through the torrent of emotions, a gentle Whisper came: “Charity never faileth . . .”

Great job, Natasha! :D You're doing awesome!

Hannah: We're done with that one. :) You're welcome to join!

      Delete
    38. It's easy. :) We set a time - let's say for ten minutes - and then whoever writes the most in that specific time period wins. :)

      Delete
    39. This comment has been removed by the author.

      Delete
    40. Thanks, Patience! :) I love your last sentence!!! :D You did really great on that last round! :D

And Word Warring is really simple. You set a certain amount of time (I generally prefer ten minutes), set a starting point, and write as many words as you possibly can in that amount of time.

And... I think that we had set fifteen minutes for that last one, didn't we, Patience? *Facepalms.* I'm so used to doing ten minutes! :P

      Delete
    41. I'm actually a plotter, Natasha, but I had some issues with my outline for this novel, and right now I'm pantsting it. That sounds great! I love K. M. Weiland's outlining method. :)

      Delete
    42. Aw, thank you so much, Natasha! :D The writing was coming very easy there, thankfully. :) And yes, we had fifteen minutes for the last one, but it's alright! :) No problem! I just got some more words in. ;D

      Delete
    43. Ah, I see. Was K. M. Weiland's outlining method the one where you plot backwards? That's the only one that's coming to mind. It sounds familiar.

      Delete
    44. What genre do you write, Natasha? :)

      Delete
    45. Haha, You're welcome, Patience! :) And I'm so glad that the writing is going better for you now! :)

      Delete
    46. By the way, you wouldn't happen to have a blog, would you?

      Delete
    47. Well, the backwards method is only one of the steps, but I haven't done that one yet. :) She wrote Outlining Your Novel and Structuring Your Novel.

      Delete
    48. Ah. I haven't read it. I haven't actually read /any/ books on writing. :P I mostly follow blogs, and gather what I can. :)

      Delete
    49. Thank you, Natasha! :) I don't have a blog at the moment, but I'm going to have a website with a blog in a few months. :) I have a Googl+ page at the moment which I am treating like a blog in the meantime. :) What about you?

      Delete
    50. Totally understand! :) I have gleaned so much from GTW personally. :)

      Delete
    51. Nope, no blog. Just my G+, which I've only just begun to use properly... *checks watch* ... about an hour ago. :P I might like to get a blog eventually, though. :) And I've followed your G+ page. I can't wait to see when you have your blog up! :)

      Delete
    52. Ah, yes! I know what you're talking about. ;D I am trying to get mine up and looking decent too. :P Aww, thanks! And I will go follow yours as soon as I send this. :) And thank you! :) I will let you know! So, what genre do you write?

      Delete
    53. Oh yeah, GTW is great! It's been really helpful, especially Jill's posts on worldbuilding! :) I also really like Anne Elisabeth Stengl's blog, "Tales of Goldstone Wood," and Athelas's blog, "Red Lettering." Those two have also been especially useful to me. :)

      Delete
    54. Aw, thanks! I haven't posted anything yet, though. :) I write Christian fantasy. My allegories aren't /that/ strong, but I like to consider it Christian fantasy nonetheless. What about you?

      Delete
    55. I have heard a lot about Anne Elisabeth Stengl. :) Hmm, perhaps I should go find Athelas' blog? :) Ahh, I see! And I write Christian historical fiction. :)
