Call for Submissions!

Roseanna M. White pens her novels beneath her Betsy Ross flag, with her Jane Austen action figure watching over her. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two children, editing for WhiteFire Publishing, designing, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels and novellas. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to make their way into her novels…to offset her real life, which is blessedly boring. You can connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and through her website.

I'm coming at you today in my role as editor for WhiteFire Publishing with a fun announcement! WFP is planning to launch its young reader line, and we need submissions! We're currently seeking:

  • Children's Picture Books (text or with illustrations)
  • Illustrators
  • Middle grade fiction (both lower and upper)
  • Young Adult novels (all genres)

WhiteFire is a small, traditional (royalty-paying) Christian publisher whose motto is "Where Spirit Meets the Page." We love books with a strong hook, engaging characters, and where the light of the Lord comes shining through. Faith themes don't necessarily have to be overt, but all our books must uphold our beliefs.

If you have a story you'd like to submit, please send the following to r.white@whitefire-publishing.com:

A cover letter that includes your contact info, book title, genre, and word count. PLUS a proposal (Word doc attachment) that includes:

  • A 1-sentence hook
  • A 1-3 paragraph blurb
  • Status of manuscript (completed? completed by?)
  • Series info, if applicable
  • Full bio, including sales history if any
  • Marketing/promotional overview (to whom the book is targeted and how you’ll appeal to them)
  • Comparable titles
  • A 2-3 page synopsis (for full length books. Shorter for shorter stories is fine!)
  • Sample. For a full length novel, this should be the first three chapters. For a shorter book, 1-2 chapters. For a picture book, send the complete text.

If you're an artist and would like to be on our roster of illustrators, please send a sample of your work to: r.white@whitefire-publishing.com

Check out our current titles at www.WhiteFire-Publishing.com. If you have any questions, feel free to email me with them at roseannamwhite@gmail.com or leave them in the comments below!

    1. There's no time limit. Once we launch the line, we'll need submissions all the time. =)

  2. Hi, Mrs. White. I do have a question for you. I'm nowhere near ready to even be considering publishing and I have been contemplating indie publishing when I am done writing my novel. My question for you is will you ever do deals like this again where you call for submissions? Your company sounds nice and I like that you don't need the books to be overtly religious. My relationship with God is the most important thing I have, but I don't like overly preach-y books, therefore I don't write overly preachy books.

So, to sum up my rambling, will you be doing another call for submissions in the future?

    God bless you!

    1. It's an open call, Ivie! We're always looking for our next titles. =) This marks the beginning of our line aimed at the 18-and-under crowd, but we'll be searching for titles for both it and our regular line for the foreseeable future.

    2. Okay, thank you! I appreciate you taking time to answer my question. I'll definitely keep your company in mind when I feel I'm ready.

    1. Hi Mrs. White! When you said you would like illustrators, do you mean for children's book interior illustrations or cover designs or both? Thanks!

    2. We have a graphics designer, but when a cover or interior calls for hand-drawn illustrations, that's what we'd need someone else for.

  4. I am bookmarking this, as I have a Superhero Dystopia trilogy that I'd like to have traditionally published. I'm not quite to the point where I'd be ready to submit - I'd need to be on the rewrite - but I'm going to keep this option open,

  5. Neat! I love middle grade fiction, so I'll keep WhiteFire in mind. :O)

  7. This sounds amazing. I was going to ask how long submissions would be accepted for, but it was already answered in a previous comment. :) I don't currently have something to submit, but I'll definitely remember this!

  9. I'm interested in being an illustrator. About how many drawings should I submit? Should I have a cover letter as well?

    1. Just a brief note in the body of the email saying you saw the call for submission on GTW, etc. And let's say 3-5 illustrations as a sample of your style.

    1. Only if it would be a full-length book for a younger reader. We're not doing anthologies or magazines, etc., right now. But if it's a story that could be an early reader would be interested in, the word counts on those are usually pretty low.

    2. Hmm, I'm working on a WIP, but my short story is only about 5-6 pages and would probably be way too serious for a younger reader.
Will you be calling for submissions in maybe a couple years from now? It might be a while for me to finish, edit, and do some rewriting for my current WIP. I have some other ideas for other novels after this one is finished.
I looked at some other comments and all my work will glorify God. That's my goal for my stories and short stories.
Thanks for answering my question. :)
      God Bless!

    3. If all goes according to plan, we'll be accepting submissions for this line from here on out. And we accept unsolicited queries, so you're always welcome to submit!

    4. Oh! That's really cool.
Okay, I'll probably be asking some questions once I see a full vision of where my story's going. Do you take story ideas? Or just the finished product?

    5. While I'm always happy to give an author my opinion on a concept, we only consider for publication complete stories--at least for first time authors.

    6. Oh, okay. Thanks for answering my questions. :)
I'll try to get back with you once I have my story completed. (It may be a while to finish editing and completing rewrites.)

  16. I'm bookmarking this for when I finish editing any of my potentially publishable manuscripts! I do have one novella now that I think could work, but I'm not sure if I want to try to expand it into a full novel . . .

    1. Keep in mind, too, that if it's aimed at younger readers (I obviously don't know if it is), then typically novella length would be about right. Though if it's YA, we'd want it longer than the typical novella.

  17. Hi! When you say that books must uphold WhiteFire's beliefs, what exactly do you mean? Is there a mission statement or list of beliefs you are specifically referring to? I looked on WhiteFire's website but couldn't find anything.

    Thanks!

    1. Great question! We had an About page that somehow vanished from navigation in our last website update--oops! Just put it back up. It's deliberately vague to avoid any nitty-gritty questions, but basically, we're a Christian publisher and we want all our books to glorify God, whether the faith themes are subtle or overt. http://whitefire-publishing.com/wordpress/about-wfp/
