When you're not reading or writing, what feeds your creative soul?

This is it, ladies and gents! The very last Summer Panel of 2017! We've had a ton of fun with this and are looking forward to jumping back into a regular blogging schedule. Coming soon, we have a couple video blogs (remember those?) and some more instructional, craft related posts.

We are so ready for fall!

But today! Today, we have one last question.

When you're not reading or writing, what feeds your creative soul?

Jill Williamson
Rest. I'm so busy going, going, going, I don't have time to think. The moment I get away and rest--give my brain time to think about nothing--ideas start rolling in. I love music. I love to sing. I love going to plays and concerts, but that doesn't inspire me. My brain needs peace and alone time to be inspired. And sometimes some pencils and some paper for drawing maps helps too.

Traveling is a big one for me. I love my desk and my routine, but getting away from both for a time dedicated to exploring and new experiences always leaves me feeling more creative. Also, learning. Whether it's podcasts, a sermon, or having a friend share a story from their own life, I find much inspiration from soaking up the wisdom of others.

For me, it's other creative endeavors. Theatre is something I'm wildly passionate about. It was a path I ventured down for a time, so to return to it, even for a night, fills me up in ways I can't explain. I also love walking through art galleries. Photography, sculptures, paintings. They inspire and energize me. My son joined the advanced choir at his school last year and nearly all their songs were in Latin. I can't tell you how it moved my soul to hear them sing. Viewing or participating in anything where someone has worked to hone their craft and God-given abilities, reminds me that hard work and focus can produce soul-moving art. As a writer, it's important to remember that.

It's your turn now! Tell us, what feeds your creative soul?

  1. Time to watch movies and get inspired by other stories.

  2. Many things, honestly. Creating art in different forms such as painting or drawing. Movies often give me inspiration to create a world like no other. Blogging, but that might be considered writing. Minecraft is also something that not necessarily inspired my writing, but it helps me create things.

These panels were fun, but I can't wait to read the regular posts again. :D

    1. Art is such fun in all its forms! Even if the best drawings I can do are stick figures. :P

    2. Exactly. I don't consider myself the best at drawing, but sometimes even just watching drawing videos on YouTube are just as inspiring.

    3. I wish I had the skill to draw. I think it's a fantastic way to get the juices flowing.

  3. Being outside just to daydream. I also enjoy classic movies, because the actors of yesteryear were the masters of characterization in my opinion.

    1. That's cool. Being out in nature can often help one relax and inspire us to dream. Do you like The Wizard of Oz? I'm not sure that's classified as classic, but I love that movie. :D

    2. Um, Judy Garland--of course it's a classic! ;) I haven't seen that movie since I was a little tyke, though. The wicked witch freaked me out, but I'm probably old enough to re-watch it now without fear. :D The tin man was my favorite.

  6. Talking with friends or just being in the presence of other people. Humans are very inspiring, at last for creative endeavors. My own dreams or extensive daydreams that I go to just to lose myself. And music.

  7. Daydreaming, movies, and singing help me are some of the things that help to keep creative juices flowing even when I'm not reading/writing! It's pretty easy for me to find other creative/inspiring things around me when I pull my head out of my books xD.

  8. Spending time with my friends and family. This often gives me ideas and scenes for stories:). Also, watching movies (especially classics) and doing calligraphy or painting.

  10. It's hard to choose... Honestly, I'm ALWAYS either reading or writing. xD But in those rare times that I'm not, drawing definitely feeds my creative soul. Usually my drawings are related to my writing (I draw maps and characters, usually). I love listening to music too.

  12. Horseback riding, Equine Training, and hanging out with friends! I also love doing joint books with friends as well it's so much fun!

  13. Dressing up and pretending to be different people. If I like the person I'm pretending to be enough then he/she will eventually become a story character.
