Register for the 100-for-100 Writing Challenge Summer 2018!

Stephanie Morrill is the creator of GoTeenWriters.com and the author of several young adult novels, including the 1920s mystery, The Lost Girl of Astor Street (Blink/HarperCollins). Despite loving cloche hats and drop-waist dresses, Stephanie would have been a terrible flapper because she can’t do the Charleston and looks awful with bobbed hair. She and her near-constant ponytail live in Kansas City with her husband and three kids. You can connect with her on FacebookTwitterPinterest, Instagram, and sign up for free books on her author website.

Of all the events we've done on Go Teen Writers, none has been quite as popular as the 100-for-100 challenge.

If you haven't played along before, the challenge is to write (at least) 100 words a day, every day, for 100 days.

100 words is about a paragraph. You can likely do it in 10 minutes or less. While it might seem like just a drop in the bucket, all those drops add up to 10.000 words in your manuscript by the end of the 100 days. And that's if you do the bare minimum! Not bad, right?

This writing challenge is open to writers of all ages! Here's how the challenge works:

1. You sign up on the form below saying, "Yes, I want to write 100 words for the next 100 days." You must be signed up by noon central time on Thursday, May 24th if you want to play along. If you live in a place where our May 24th is your May 25th, do whatever feels easiest for you. Either start on May 24th in your time zone or in ours.

2. Beginning on Thursday, May 24th you write 100 words on the project of your choice. You must pick one project to work on for the 100-for-100 challenge. Only words for that that project count towards your daily words. Here are the exceptions:
  • If you finish your project. Hooray for finishing projects! If this happens, tell us so we can celebrate, and then pick something else to work on.
  • If you and your project part ways. This happened to me one year. The 100-for-100 coincided with a writers conference, and I pitched my 100-for-100 book to an editor at the conference. She told me they already had a book in the pipeline that was basically the same concept. And that was probably the last time I ever opened that manuscript file...
3. You write 100 words a day everyday until Friday, August 31st, and you keep track of it. At the end of the challenge, you'll send me your tracking sheet. Here's a link to one we've made, but you don't have to use this one. (This link will give you access to view it but not make changes. You can print it out, download it, or save a copy to your own Google Drive. If you're having trouble with it, let me know.) Somehow, though, you need to keep track of how many words you've written so that I can see. A few notes about your words:
  • You are allowed one "grace day" per week (sometimes life happens, plus many people take a day off a week for religious reasons and we want to respect that), and one "grace week" per contest. So if one week you only write 300 words, you just count up what you have, and press on.
  • You can write more than 100 words each day if you like. Most people find they do. But you can't write 700 words on Monday and nothing the rest of the week and still participate in the challenge. The idea is to develop a writing discipline. So some days you might write 1,000 words and others you might barely get in your 100.
4. When the challenge is over, you send me your form. Then three things happen:
  • You get my admiration and respect. I have actually never made it all the way to the end. I'm hoping this is my moment!
  • You get entered for prizes! Books, gift cards, critiques, and all sorts of fun writerly things that you'll like.
  • We post your name on a list on the website as someone who totally rocks. We also do fun competitions between the age groups to see who was the most productive. It's a lot of fun!
Some helpful tips:

Lydia Howe is a published author and community member who has been faithfully doing the challenge since 2012. If you missed her post yesterday, make sure to check it out.

If you're looking for a community to do this with, the Go Teen Writers Community Facebook group is a fabulous place. We're very careful about who has access to the group, so if you want to join, go ahead and apply, and then expedite your approval by emailing us: GoTeenWritersCommunity(at)gmail.com.

We will be using the hashtag #GTW100for100 on social media.

That is a great chance to rack up words and make friends this summer! We hope you'll join us!

  1. I've never done one of these 100-for-100 challenges before, but I am excited to finally get to do one! It looks like it will be a lot of fun, but a little difficult to keep up too - which is great. The one thing that I'm excited about and nervous about is the "one project" thing - there are a few WIPs that I've been bouncing around from, so I guess it's time for me to choose one to focus on for now! :) Looking forward to it starting!

    1. Maybe the 100-for-100 will help you by "forcing" you to focus on just one project. Or maybe you'll learn that you work better when you bounce around. Either way, you'll learn something :)

    2. Is it possible to change the email address I signed up with?

  2. Yay! This challenge is special to me because it's partly responsible for my first longest project I ever wrote! Ironically, the series I'm working on right now is connected to that book I first wrote through this three or so years ago (that book has become #3).

    1. Also, while I do write every day (journaling, etc) I have been taking Saturdays off for "real" writing as I feel I'm pursuing it for money and need a slight break. I took no grace days the first time through, But I think I will this time ;D

I'm excited to do this again!

  3. I loved participating last year! But this time around I'll be editing, so I'll have to give it a pass. Hopefully next time!

    1. I've had years like that too, Tracey. Hopefully next time it lines up better with your schedule.

  4. I would love to participate. Right now, I am in the outlining phase and making a story book as I go, but not writing a first draft. Does that count as well?

  5. Aww no... I'm going to be separated from my computer for the month of July... I might just do it for while I'm here.

    1. I hope you will, Erica! You could also plan to continue longhand in July. I know others have done that when they have to be away from their computers for an extended duration of time.

    2. In that case I might just do it. I can't promise that I'll have the time to write in July because of the reason I'll be gone, but even so, I am going to give at least SOME participation.

  6. I feel like I asked this before, but . . . can editing words count? Two of my main projects at the moment are editing-based, not writing-based, and I want to participate in this but I can't justify completely switching gears for three months for this. And, yes, one of those writing projects, I probably could both edit it and get in about a hundred words a day of actual writing. For the other, though, the stage of editing I'm in takes as much or more brainpower than writing. (Basically, I'm taking my handwritten manuscript and typing it into Word, and as I do that, I adjust wording, fix grammar issues, rework problem scenes, and sometimes add completely new pieces or scenes when necessary.) So, yeah. Can I count my words edited for the second project, if not the first?

    1. When I'm editing, I always end up adding words, so for me the challenge would still work. I don't know what kind of editor you are, Sarah, but you're welcome to join us!

    2. Awesomesauce, thanks! In that case, I'm excited to join the challenge!

  8. This will be my first time participating in a 100-4-100 challenge!!! I can't wait!!!

I'm going to do my word count towards the book that Sarah Rodecker and I are writing together, but I'm also going to keep editing my trilogy and working on a short story for a contest over the challenge as well.

  10. I'll be doing it!!!! I'll probably be editing the first book of my series (a full rewrite) and then working on book 3.

  11. Yay, I'm so excited this one is back!! I can't wait to participate. Thanks for putting this on again!

  12. Gonna try it! I’ve participated several ones since the first one, but I don’t think I ever made it all the way through. Maybe this year!

  13. Awwww. I'm so excited for this! It's bringing back a lot of memories. I remember when I first found the blog back in 2012 and it was in full swing. I thought it looked really cool and hoped I could do it someday. And then when you hosted it the next year, I jumped in with gusto! I wrote on paper then, however, so counting up at the end was always agonizing :P I can't wait to get some words down this summer! It'll hopefully keep me writing, even while I'm working and leaving for college :)

  15. This will be my first time to try doing this. I am really looking forward to it. If I am understanding this correctly, I write on my own document but record on the sheet you have given a link to of how many words we write each day. Then, at the end we send you the sheet. Will you provide an email where we send the sheet to, or did you already and I missed it? I am really looking forward to the experience, and I just need to figure out which story I will be working on for this challenge.

  17. I am planning on participating in Camp NaNoWriMo in July but I might be doing a different project there than for 100-for-100. Would it be okay to switch projects for that or will I have to continue on the same one?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I tried this once before, but I was a beginning writer who didn't have the dedication to keep up with it. However: I've been neglecting my writing, and I really need to get back in the habit - 100 words a day can't be too hard, right?? - so Attempt #2 it is! :D

  19. Yay! My book is way short, so I'll likely be editing and adding in words. I know I'm definitely going to have one week and possibly two where I'll be at a no-electronic and no-time-to-write-in-a-notebook camp, but I'll go as long as I can. :)

  20. I'm one of those weird people who doesn't really like to enter giveaways. Is there a way for me to participate and not be entered into the prizes? I'm just curious because I would like to do this, but since I don't really want the prizes, I don't want to take someone else's chance from having it.

  21. SO. EXCITED! The 100-for-100 is my favorite writing challenge, tied with Camp NaNoWrimo ;). Quick question though - I almost always have two projects to work on, one that I'm handwriting (for when I can't access my computer) and one that I'm typing (for when I can access my computer ;)). Would it be alright if I count words from both of those, since I do bounce back and forth? Or should I try to stick to just one?

Thanks for hosting this again! I love this challenge <3

    2. Savannah, for the sake of the 100-for-100, let's count words for just one of the projects unless you want to commit to the challenge for both.

  23. It's been a few years since I last participated in one of these, but I'm ready to get back in the game. I have a new project that I've just started (Involving Jane Austen + Fairy Tales + High/Epic Fantasy), that this should be good motivation for.

I might not be able to have a computer at hand during the whole summer, but I'll continue by hand if necessary :)

  33. I've been trying to talk a friend into doing this and finishing her WIP for me... I guess I'd best follow my own advice. xD
I'll be writing considerable more words than the 10k, but maybe this will be that kick in the pants for that one project I've been neglecting.

(I wonder if I could talk my 13-year-old sister into writing with me.)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't have facebook unfortunately, is there any other way to talk with others doing the challenge? (I'd be happy to set up an unofficial discord if there isn't any other way to communicate.) Happy writing!
