Olivia Brownlow is no damsel in distress. Born in a workhouse and raised as a boy among thieving London street gangs, she is as tough and cunning as they come. When she is taken in by her uncle after a caper gone wrong, her life goes from fighting and stealing on the streets to lavish dinners and soirees as a debutante in high society. But she can’t seem to escape her past … or forget the teeming slums where children just like her still scrabble to survive.
Jack MacCarron rose from his place in London’s East End to become the adopted “nephew” of a society matron. Little does society know that MacCarron is a false name for a boy once known among London gangs as the Artful Dodger, and that he and his “aunt” are robbing them blind every chance they get. When Jack encounters Olivia Brownlow in places he least expects, his curiosity is piqued. Why is a society girl helping a bunch of homeless orphan thieves? Even more intriguing, why does she remind him so much of someone he once knew? Jack finds himself wondering if going legit and risking it all might be worth it for love.
It's such an excellent and creative retelling! Today's panel question is:
What is your favorite part of having the job of writing books? And what is your least favorite part of the writing job?
Lorie: It’s so hard to pick just one favorite thing. This career is my dream job! Telling stories that inspire readers, help them escape the hard parts of life, and bring them hope is what I was created to do. I also love interacting with readers and aspiring authors.
My least favorite part is the uncertainty. The next book deal is never guaranteed…at least I haven’t reached that point in my career yet. So, it can be quite stressful not knowing where your next paycheck is coming from or when.

Stephanie: My favorite part is the actual writing stuff. I love brainstorming, drafting, editing, all of it. I have even learned to enjoy some of the marketing pieces of being an author.
My least favorite part is making decisions about managing my time. I have a ten-year-old, seven-year-old and two-year old, so it’s very difficult to figure out how to do All The Things.
Shan: My favorite drafting moment happens when the story begins to write itself. The characters and the world and the plot are fleshed out enough that the writing takes on a lighter feel. It’s exciting to come back to the page as opposed to daunting. This usually happens for me toward the end of my first draft. Edits are much more fun for me. Especially if I’m working with insightful feedback. Writing to an edit that inspires me is very satisfying.
My least favorite part is all the waiting. SO MUCH WAITING. We hurry to write, to edit, to develop. And then we wait. It’s a necessary evil, but it is evil.

Jill: My favorite part is coming up with new ideas and brainstorming it all out. I love that creative process so much. (Which is why new ideas are so tempting!)
My least favorite is finishing that first draft, especially of a first book in a new series. I love starting the book, but somewhere in the middle to end, it gets messy and hard and I want to push forward and finish, but I’m often stuck and frustrated that I’m stuck. It’s hard work, and I’m always so excited to be done so I can edit. (Editing is my second favorite part.)

What about you? What's your favorite and least favorite part of writing a book?
My favorite part of writing is editing with my mom, because she is so good at not only finding major problems I miss but also giving me some of the best story plots ever!
ReplyDeleteMy least favorite part is waiting to get my books back from the printer;)
Hi Ryana!
DeleteCritique partners are such a blessing and if it's your mom...bonus!
Editing...both answers. I love editing so much, because I basically get to read my story and make little corrections, little tweaks, and basically make it better.
ReplyDeleteI hate editing so much because it seems to just drag on and I'd rather just be writing and I can't remember half the side plots and banging my head on my desk is just easier, lol
I totally relate! I love editing, but there are days when I feel nostalgic for the freedom of writing a first draft. Because then when you're not getting something right, you can think, "I'll just fix it in edits!"
DeleteLOL...I totally feel you, Julian! Editing can be very rewarding, but it is not easy!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite moment is the moment the characters come alive and I get the feeling that I finally know them. Some are clear from the beginning, and for some I need lots of time to figure them out. But I love it when I get the feeling of 'Oh hi, there you are, nice to meet you and know you'.
ReplyDeleteMy least favorite is time management. I am a SAHM with 3 childeren, and the youngest is still at home with me. Balancing all the things can be hard sometimes.
Balance is hard. I have two teenage boys and I still struggle with time management at times. But it helps when I hit that moment you're talking about when the characters kind of take over!
DeleteI love the thrill of coming up with a new idea, writing that idea out in a full draft after all of the initial excitement has worn off is probably my least favorite part.
ReplyDeleteThose new ideas are wonderful, but yes, hitting the midpoint and struggling through to finish can be tough. Some books I never hit that slump, like Olivia Twist. My current WIP though...I've put it down and picked it back up for a year and a half!
DeleteI just finished Olivia Twist yesterday and reviewed it on my blog today. Loved it!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, my favorite thing about writing is somewhere in the middle of a first draft when the creative fires are burning. I’m not struggling to get started, or make it to the end, and I can just let the words pour out. Though my second favorite part is writing the end.
My least favorite part is a tie between editing, and waiting. Both rub me the wrong way, on so many levels. But they’re a must, unfortunately.
Hi Maddie,
DeleteSo glad you loved Olivia Twist! If you post your review to your favorite book retail site, you can send me the link and you'll qualify for the free 12 page bonus scene. :) Email: LorieLangdonauthor @ gmail.com
I love and hate editing. It can feel overwhelming, but I love it when all the puzzle pieces are coming together to make the book stronger.
Favorite part: when I sit down to write feeling drained, and after draining myself, hop up ready to dance around and holler, I feel so good!
ReplyDeleteLeast favorite part: rewriting my first book so many times that I begin to fear I'll never be able to truly fix its problems.
Your book sounds so interesting, Lorie!
Hi Olivia,
DeleteI had to rewrite my first published novel, DOON, SEVEN times before it was the published version you can read today. I despaired as well that it may never work, but then I got a four book publishing deal! So keep at it!
BTW, you should totally read Olivia Twist since the main character shares your name! ;D
It's such a good book :)
DeleteI love that writing gives you energy like that! It's so wonderful when we find things that fill us up.
Lorie, thank you for that encouragement! I definitely needed to hear it. And yes, I should totally read Olivia Twist. ;) My best friend's little brother likes calling me Oliver, so I have that in common with your protagonist as well!
