A lovely writer in our community emailed me to ask, "I was wondering if you could have a post asking what authors everybody admires/books they are into. I am always looking to read new books by new authors, and would love to hear what people are reading."
Discovering new authors to love and follow is such a wonderful thing, isn't it? I remember the first time I read The Apothecary's Daughter by Julie Klassen and just kept thinking "I love this book. This is so good. Wow, what a great word to use! Oh, that was such a good scene. What's going to happen next?..."
What was the last book that made you feel that way?
See you all back here on Monday for a new writing prompt!
Hmm... I would probably say the Cat Royal series did that for me. I especially admire them because the books are written in first person - I find it the hardest point of view to write in, so the author has my immediate respect! I love it when you have special books that you admire :)

Umm, probably the Veritas project books by Frank Peretti...i love those books!
ReplyDeleteI'm reading the Hunger Games - my newest obsession. I loved the first book and the second one wasn't bad either. The third is good but it is SOO depressing. I think it gives a good picture of how it really feels to have killed a person though. That isn't just something you can "get over."
ReplyDeleteAlso, Scott Westerfeld (author of Uglies) just released the last book in his Leviathan trilogy, which I LOVE. I'm going to his book signing on Friday with some friends!
The best books I've read this year (and I can safely say this because I fell in love with Skylar's story LAST year) are Waterfall, Cascade, and Torrent by Lisa T. Bergren. SO WORTH IT!! I won Waterfall and I'm so glad I did, because I never would have bought it (I read the first page online and thought it kooky). I was totally wrong, so glad I won it, and as soon as I finished it, I pre-ordered the others. Usually I'm almost asleep when I come home from work but the day Torrent came I was squealing and freaking my poor puppy out!! :)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, READ those books!
I've read one of the Cat Royal books ~ it was very well written. Also, I very much want to read the series Rachelle mentioned.
ReplyDeleteThe most recent book that gave me that sort of emotion(because really, it's more of a specific emotion than a string of thoughts in my case - I call it the 'I Wish I Wrote This' feeling) was Howl's Moving Castle. by Diana Wynne Jones. Great movie, greater book, and just absolutely beautiful and hilarious all at once. In fact, you can read my review of it here: http://maybeteenauthor.blogspot.com/2011/09/book-review-howls-moving-castle.html

I'm in the middle of Jenny b Jones' "there you'll find" it's been so refreshing. Oh to write like Jenny b jones!!
ReplyDeleteThe Charity's Dairy series by Elisabeth Allen (http://www.elishevapublishing.co.uk/charity.php) I have read so many good books this year though, including one by a dear friend of mine that in not available to buy yet.
ReplyDeleteI am an absolute fan of anything Jenny B. Jones, because she seriously is one of my inspirations when I write. Anything from her is wonderful in my opinion. Another great author is Kristen Heiztman, though her books tend to be much more dark and intense. Her characters are phenomenal though, and her story plots are so well done. Once and awhile I'll reread one of her books, and then have to force myself not to feel depressed, because my dream of writing that well seems so far away. ;)
ReplyDeleteI read a book called "Tour de Force", by Elizabeth White. I've read another book of hers and didn't enjoy it much, so I was very hesitant to read this book, but I love dancing, so I had to read it. I was so glad I did. It really was quite good. Her characters were well done, and I liked the setting, the pace, the dialogue. A nice book to get lost in for a couple hours. :)
After the Leaves Fall by Nicole Baart. It is the first in a trilogy. I've yet to read the final one, but the first two are so great and the writing is amazing!
ReplyDeleteSierra, I read the first book of H.I.V.E. and I loved it too :)
ReplyDeleteI know it seems a little kiddy, but I really like The Jungle Books, because they are written in a way that I love, where you can imagine everything really well :D

Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE The Lord of The Rings. Every time I read the poems about Elves and stuff I get shivers down my spine. I like the Cat Royal books too, they're really funny. I have just read The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff and think it's awesome!

I love anything by Jill Williamson!
ReplyDeleteI also like:
The Healer's Apprentice by: Melanie Dickerson
The Giver by: Lois Lowry
The Persecutor by: Sergei Kourdakov
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by: Elizabeth George Speare
Rowboat in a Hurricane by: Julie Angus
and
Oryus by: Craig Gordan
The "A Series of Unfortunat Events" books are good, for a nice, light read, as well. And any classic! I think I like classics the best.
I have many more, but if I get started, I know that I most certainly won't stop! :)

Oh! I've heard about the Witch Of Blackbird Pond.
ReplyDeleteA friend recommended it!

I was the one who emailed about this- thank you for making this into a post, Stephanie! I wrote down evey recommendation everyone has said so for, THANK YOU ALL! I have lists upon lists of books I want to read and constantly add to it daily :) I am obsessed with the fabulous Sherlock Holmes novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I've read every Sherlock Holmes novel and short story at least three times. I also adore the books and graphic novels of Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaiman's book of short stories, Fragile Things, is probablly my favorite book I've read so far this year :)I'm off to the National Book Festival tomorrow in Washington DC! My list of books to read will triple in size after this weekend, oh boy.
ReplyDeleteYikes! I've read SO many good books recently.
ReplyDeleteI've really gotten into Melody Carlson books. Forgotten: Seventeen and Homeless was a really good book.
I also like Mike Delosso books. His are thrillers, so you pretty much HAVE keep reading. If you are ever looking for a good thriller, Scream and The Hunted are awesome!
I reread The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia at least once every two years. Hands down some of my absolute favorites.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I love the Tommy and Tuppence mysteries by Agatha Christie. They are definitely lighter than most of AC's, but no less intriguing, in fact they are some of her most intriguing of hers I've read. The first one is The Secret Adversary, then Partners in Crime, N or M?, By the Pricking of My Thumbs, and Postern of Fate. They are some of the most fun and suspense filled mysteries I've read.
Anything by Colleen Coble and Jenny B. Jones will not disappoint! :D (If you get the chance, read The Lonestar series, excellent series! And The Lightkeeper's Ball by the same woman)
ReplyDeleteCornelia Funke is also an excellent author. She paints great pictures in her stories, though she is a fantasy author. I recommend "The Inkheart Trilogy" though, her best work yet. :) Oh, and "Reckless".
Narnia is also an incredible book series too.
Terri Farley is another great one, she's the author of The Phantom Stallion series and some other horsey type books. :)
Everyone, read Cat Royal by Julia Golding!!!
