If you're not familiar with a word war, it's when writers decide to write for a set period of time and see who ends up with the most words.
This word war will run through Friday at midnight. On Friday, we'll have a form up for 24 hours where you can submit your word count. This will be on the honor system...unless you're one of the top three people to final and then we'll need to verify your words.
The top three will get their pick of a free download of Go Teen Writers: How to Turn Your First Draft into a Published Book, a free download of The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet by me, or a copy of Captives by Jill. (If you already own all these, we'll work out an alternative prize.)
You can begin counting your words...NOW!
If you need help staying motivated, consider playing "1k in 1 hour" in the comments section below (where you race with other writers to try to write a thousand words in one hour) or chat with other writers on Twitter using the hashtag #GoTeenWriters. Or when you're done writing for the day, consider posting your word total in the comments section so you can cheer each other on!
Want to tell others you're engaged in a word war this week? You can grab one of these badges for your blog or Facebook page:
Have fun!
Great! I'm in!
ReplyDeleteStarting @ 8:27 a.m. and 20 296 words.
I...can...do...it
I should really get back to writing.
But quick question: how many words can you guys usually write in a week?
-Shaneene
In a typical week probably 10 to 15k.
DeleteWHOOOOO!!
ReplyDeleteI...I...forgot about this. *facepalm* BUT THIS IS PERFECT! Now I can NOT EDIT this week! I'll write instead! ;)
I'm starting with 6,124 words in the first draft of my new story. We'll see how much I can up that this week. :)
What do we do if we won't have internet access on Friday? Is there another way that we can submit our word count? Or can we submit the word count before Friday.... like, on Thursday?
ReplyDeleteAnyways, Fun idea! I can't wait to get started!
-Abby
You can just shoot me an email with your total word count, Abby. And since the war doesn't end until Friday, you can send it Saturday if you'd like.
DeleteSure thing! I probably won't get to write much though. :) I'm going on trip on Thursday, so I may shoot you an email that morning before I leave. :)
DeleteStarting at 9am today with 17303 words...
ReplyDeleteStarting at 3PM (GMT+1)with 23.920 words
ReplyDeleteStarting at 9:17. What's everyone's predictions for what they can write this week?
ReplyDelete~Sarah
I don't dare to aim too high as I'm in the midst of exams this week, but I hope to reach the 6.000 at least :)
DeleteUgh. Exams. Feel for you, Arlette!
DeleteThanks Rachelle! I'm going to do my best to plan writing time for the evening hours when studying is done
DeleteI've never done a word war before. Sounds like fun. Does it have to be all on one thing or can it be several stories combined?
ReplyDeletePretty certain it can be whatever writing you're doing--poems, stories, all that. :)
DeleteBet we're going to rack up a ton of comments on this post. xD
Okay. In that case, I'm in. :)
DeleteSo, can it be a story you have already started? I think I will try to do this...eek!!:)
DeleteNaomi
Oh yes, of course, Naomi! :)
DeleteYay! Thank you! Fun, fun! :-)
DeleteNaomi
I'm so glad Amanda's here in my absence! Yep, everything she said is right. But, like, blog posts or emails wouldn't count :)
DeleteHaha, I love answering questions ;) And yes. That is indeed what I meant. :)
DeleteStarting at 10:47. :D
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful. 11:10
ReplyDeleteBeginning at 11:19.
ReplyDeleteOh. I guess I need to declare a time. Lol. I started at 8:51 CST.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you do...I don't know why everyone is, LOL. But okaydokay. xD
DeleteI know - funny trend Shaneene started :) I like it, though. Seems more official or something.
DeleteDoes anybody want to do a 1k in 1 hour with me? I have a lot to do today, so I might not get anything done if I have no competition :)
ReplyDeleteActually, if anybody wants to compete head on with me (we focus the most on beating each other and do updates on word count every day this week) I'd like that too. Can you tell that I have no writing friends? ;)
DeleteAw...sympathy for you! I wish I had friends who would write stories with me...:-) Oh well, they don't know what they are missing out on! I would say I would do that with you, but I out in the middle of no where and I don't want to use all my Internet on updating that. :/ Sorry...
DeleteNaomi
Alyson, I'm sure someone will totally take you up on that!
DeleteI hope so, it'd be great if I had somebody to motivate me some more. Thanks, Naomi. You're right, my friends don't get how awesome it is to write. The middle of nowhere can be annoying when it comes to internet ;)
DeleteYes, but it can also be good to limit myself so that I will write more...:)
DeleteNaomi
I'm in :) 12:03
ReplyDeleteOooh, I'm so in! This is just what I need to get my novel off and running.
ReplyDeleteStarted at 11:35 with 46,289....
ReplyDeleteNaomi
May I just say? Yay!
ReplyDeleteStarting at 10:46 am PST...with 0. This couldn't have come at a better time. Just finished my outline five minutes ago, first full week of summer ahead...
ReplyDelete-Dani
How perfect is that, Dani?
DeleteAwesome. My goal for today is 6k. I can do it ... I think. :)
ReplyDeleteJust keep writing, just keep writing...
6,000 works in a day?
DeleteKatia, you're awesome.
DeleteLet us know if you do. That would be awesome!
DeleteI didn't actually do that. Tomorrow I will. I wrote 4,000.
DeleteToday, I wrote 4,000, for clarification.
DeleteActually, I wrote 2500. But I'm *so* making up for it tomorrow. :)
Delete2,500 is still pretty astounding ;)
DeleteMore than I wrote.
DeleteAwesome!! I'm so doing this! Starting word count: 54,485
ReplyDeleteReady...
Set...
GO!
Sounds awesome! I started a new WIP last week, so I'll definitely participate!
ReplyDeleteI've gotten over 2,000 words today!! How is everybody doing?
ReplyDelete(Just for the record I REALLY miss the Facebook group. :P)
~Nat
And we miss you!
DeleteIf I own all of those great prizes already, would you consider giving away a five-ten page critique?
ReplyDelete-Marilla
When you say, "A copy of Captives" do you mean an e-book copy or a paperback copy?
ReplyDeleteI like it whenever people get together and share views.
ReplyDeleteGreat website, stick with it!
My site: workout routines for abs at home
I've got a problem, and although I realize this isn't the best thread, I think it is currently the most active. I love writing, and I would love to get published, but my mother doesn't understand it. I've had a talk with her about supporting me and she agreed to be supportive, but on the side she always makes snarky comment about how writing is a waste of time and she wants to know about everything I do. I've tried my very best to put up with it, telling myself there will always be unbelievers, but i'm now getting very annoyed. She doesn't understand the whole "first draft with the door shut" thing, and wants to read (and criticize mostly) everything I write while pointing out how much more money I would make it business or something.
ReplyDeleteNext of all, she doesn't want me to send out query letters! My mom wants to research everything about the publishing industry and while she claims that she "just doesn't want me to hurt," she is way overprotective.
What should I do? Writing is the best thing ever, and I've finally polished my novel until it sparkles. I would love to send out queries, but she isn't letting me!
Thanks in advance,
Lucina A.
Lucina,
DeleteHaving unsupportive family/friends is really hard. Here is my suggestion. Sit down and talk with her. Now I know you said you have already done this but I would suggest doing it again. 1) Ask her why she is so hesitant. This way she can get out exactly why and talk her through it. Not just "it isn't a good job" but try to get her specific concerns 2) Tell her that you really need her support. This is what you love to do and she said she would be supportive and the off hand comments are really hard on you. Also if you have someone telling you that you can do it then a rejection letter isn't going to be as hard to recover from if you still have people who are cheering you on and encouraging you to keep going 3) If she is worried about you not making money and all that jazz. Remind her that if you don't send it to a publisher you will never know if you can. There are plenty of famous and rich writers, no guarantee that you will be that rich or that famous but remind her it is possible. All you need is support good solid advice and a good story. Sending it to an editor or publisher allows you to grow and learn until you will finally be published. Have you read The Art of War for Writers? This is a really good book and there is a great section on publishing if I am remembering correctly. Read it together, show her that while the industry is tough it will allow you to grow as a writer. Sometimes finding quotes from writers who are published might help.
Last thing, be careful when you talk to her. She loves you and just wants the best. Gently and winsomely show her that writing is what you really, really want to do. Stay strong and keep writing. I hope this helps. If you need any thing let me know.
Lauren B.
Thanks!
DeleteLauren offered some great thoughts. Very nice.
DeleteI wrote an article about dealing with parents back in April. Hopefully there's something helpful for you in there, Lucina: http://goteenwriters.blogspot.com/2013/04/teen-writers-and-expectations-from.html
Goodness me. I write like I run. Slower than a herd of turtles stuck in peanut butter. 389 words. That's gotta be the opposite of a record. Haha, I'm multitasking. Really, if emails counted, I would have multiplied my number by at least 5.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I'm the same way. I sit down to start writing and then feel the need to check my email. And then go back to writing and then I'm doing something else.
DeleteLol! So glad I'm not the only one! Pandora,Lemony Snicket, blogs, so many emails, texting, housework, Pinterest, and oh yeah, shouldn't I be writing?
DeleteYeah. I write slow, too. I wrote for 2 1/2 hours today (without any distractions) and only got about 1,000 words. It's more than I usually get, but it's not that much for that amount of uninterrupted time. :/
DeleteAshley, that's great! You're beating yourself up for nothing. The thing you should be focusing on is that, hey! You wrote for two and a half hours!!!! You wrote 1000 WORDS!!!! You're fabulous.
DeleteYes. Procrastination. Bleeeeeh.
DeleteAnd Ashley, that's awesome! Just like Lydia said--1,000 words is awesome! :) I'm not going to be pulling any 1k in 1 hours, either. ;) SLOW WRITERS UNITE!
Thanks, y'all! :)
DeleteI think this just became a Slow Writers Un-Anonymous group. :) I love it. Let's be friends. Lol.
DeleteHa! You guys make me laugh! :)
DeleteThat's probably because we're hilarious. :)
DeleteI'm in full support of this group. When I saw the suggestion about 1,000 words in an hour, I think I died a little in my heart.
DeleteHahaha, I thought, "How about 100 words an hour?"
DeleteAll in favor of this fabulous group, say "aye!"
...Aye!
I am so glad I was not the only one to die a little when I saw the 1k/hr challenge.
DeleteAYE! xD
Delete...well we certainly are having a time of it, aren't we? ;)
It's a total blast!!!!! :)
DeleteAye! :)
DeleteAll in favor, feel free to email me at gracex10d(at)gmail(dot)com
DeleteThen we can start a group email :)
Emailed you! :)
DeleteThis sounds so fun! I can't wait to see how many words I can write.
ReplyDeleteStarting at 4:49 MST
ReplyDeleteTwo questions: how do you verify a word count and can it be on more than one WIP?
ReplyDeleteNot sure about the verifying, but yes it can definitely be on more than one WIP!
DeleteWhat do you mean by verify? Do you mean how do WE verify that you wrote what you wrote, or how do you check your own word count?
DeleteHow do YOU verify? Just curious :)
DeleteI'd love to do this, but my WIP is being edited, not first-drafted. :( Any suggestions for what to do?
ReplyDeleteAre you writing anything else, Selah? :) Short stories, poetry...articles :)
DeleteWell, I did remember that a friend is writing a novel with me, and it's my turn to write a chapter. :D Also, I am a song writer and a poem writer, but they don't take as many words... :/ I guess I could write a bunch of short stories as well. I need to do more of them, anyway. :) Thank you!
DeleteOH MY GOSH!!!!!!!! I write songs too! I don't know anybody who writes songs. Do you think that we could share some lyrics with each other (me first, if you feel uncomfortable) and get in contact? I think that that would be awesome!
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteSorry about that earlier comment, I was logged into the wrong thing. :D
DeleteWow, really? I like to think that I write a bit of everything. :D I'd love to get in contact! If you were thinking of emailing, leave me a comment on my blog and that will give me your email address (no one else will see it, because it only shows the owner of the blog; that is, me, in this case. :D). So cool that you write songs too! :) On my blog I put some writing things up, like excerpts from my WIPs, and I want to put up some lyrics soon as well, so check them out if you want. :)
I commented! So excited :)
DeleteAwesome! Me too!!!!!!!!! :D
DeleteDo you play any instruments? I play piano and a little bit of guitar.
DeleteSAME!!! Mostly piano, and I know a few guitar chords. I also sing. (My blog has a video of me singing if you want to watch. :))
DeleteYay for y'all finding common interests!!! :D
DeleteFinishing Monday out with 2,542. G'night everybody!
ReplyDelete~Sarah Faulkner
www.inklinedwriters.blogpsot.com
Yay, Sarah! That's incredible! :)
DeleteAmanda, you're so encouraging!
Delete~Sarah
Aw, thanks. I love doing it :)
DeleteFinishing out Tuesday with a collective 5165! I think that might be the most I've ever written in two days. I'm starting to think I'll finish this novel before the war is over!
DeleteWOW, that would be awesome! :D Nothing like a ginormous word war between a couple dozen people...:)
DeleteAwesome!
DeleteFinishing day 3 with 7688!! Getting really close to my climax now!
DeleteWHOOOOO SARAH! That's awesome! You can do it!
Delete1,200 words in 50 minutes. How did you guys do?
ReplyDeleteWow Rachel, that's awesome! :D
DeleteThat was fast!
DeleteWell done! I've done it as fast as that . . . once, I think, when I did 1,000 in about 35 minutes xD But congratulations for getting up to 1,200, and so quickly too!
DeleteStarted 11.36 with 23,000 words (I have a thing for round numbers). Lot of distractions going on, but I have 752 in the last hour and a half and I'll get 1,000 done today anyway :) Ugh, I have my Junior Cert (GCSE) in Music tomorrow to study for as well!
ReplyDeleteOK, I've done 1,000 so I'm now at 24,000 (yay only 4 more pages to 100 pages! :D). I badly need to study for my exam tomorrow, but if I get that and a shower etc. done in time I'll come back and see if I can do another 1,000 later! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, Rose!
DeleteGood luck with studying and congrats on 1,000 words! :)
DeleteThanks! I'm going to stop clogging up the comments now, but I just wanted to say thanks a million for the encouragemant - I wrote 2,000 words today which I've never done before (every day I do 1,000). And it's brought me up to 100 pages so I'm incredibly proud! Thanks, I'll keep going with the Word War tomorrow and good luck to everyone else as well!
Delete*encouragement, oops typo.
DeleteYay for firsts! And 100 pages. I love those mile stones.
DeleteWell I missed this yesterday, which only shows how busy I am. So I'm starting today with 49,749 words. Yay! Good luck to everyone!
ReplyDeleteGlad you saw it today, anyhow! :)
Delete...I think I've accidentally taken over the roll of Ms. Morrill...haha.
Maybe you should try to get her to pay you as an assistant...:) Haha, just kidding.:)
DeleteNaomi
ROFL No thanks. ;)
DeleteAw man, I probably won't be able to participate. :/ maybe next time!
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad, Bethany. :( Next time, though! :)
DeleteShout-out to Amanda Fischer: Keep being wonderful you!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAwwwww thanks. *blushes*
DeleteYou're so darn welcome.
DeleteYES!!!!!! KEEP BEING WONDERFUL!!!!! :-) You are sooo encouraging!
Delete- Koren <3
Thank you! ;)
DeleteNaomi
Ah! This Word War is just what I needed! Time to actually WRITE more of my novel! :D
ReplyDeleteStarting at 12:40 p.m. Central Time with 3,666 words.
Wish me luck! :)
GO ERIN! ;) YOU CAN DO IT!
Delete...I'm off to write myself. :)
Thanks Amanda!
DeleteAs of 2:15, I have 800 words. Not much, but at least it's something! Still planning on writing more later today.
Yay!
Delete678 words. Meh.
ReplyDeleteHey, that's better than me. :P
DeleteIn two days? :P
DeleteDid you see how much she has commenting? She has been to busy to write. Haha! :-)
DeleteNaomi
Pretty sure Amanda beat my writing word count with the word count of her comments alone!
Delete1165 - progress!
DeleteLOL you guys. xD
DeleteAnd I have about 700 words for both days, Lydia. I wrote myself into a corner. -_-
Mine is a brand new story... so no corners yet. You'll get out of it. Try doing some guilty pleasure writing... write tons of different ways the story could go if there were no boundaries, no rules. Just play with it and you might get some fresh inspiration.
DeleteThanks :) I'll try that and see. I'm trying to figure out a way to get my main character out of his house to the other main character's house so they can start their "journey"...but his parents are expecting him to shear sheep today, so I'm trying to think of a logical way to get him out of this. ;)
DeleteMaybe he needs to be invited :) People hardly think,"Oh, I should just go to so and so's house and shirk all responsibility." They need to have a valid reason, to be needed.
DeleteOh, he's invited. Heheh. His parents just don't exactly know...anyhow. We'll see. I'll figure something out. xD
DeleteThanks, though!
You'll do fabulous, and you're welcome.
DeleteI bet this post has the most comments ever! Well, I really don't feel like checking (I should be writing) but maybe the Teen Writers Store has more....
ReplyDeleteI think that the collaborative writing post has the most, 200 or something :) You can't even view them all on the same page!
DeleteWhen I looked, this had 110 comments, GTWS had 113. So it is really close. And we can beat it!
DeleteSure we can. I'll check in @ the end of every day with my word count.
Delete1365 words so far today. Not as much as I would like, but I'll keep working at it.
ReplyDeleteGood job, Jill! :)
DeleteThanks, Amanda! You ARE so encouraging :)
DeleteI think this is the most I've ever written in two days. My cousin thinks I'm strange, but she doesn't get how awesome free books are (how does she even live!?)
ReplyDeleteI feel you. My family is like that.
DeleteOh yes, exactly, Anon! :D
DeleteAll right, I'm closing off my day with 24 700 words written. Not all this week, of course, because that would be almost impossible as a student (but still awesome).
ReplyDeleteSo far for the Word War, I've written approximately 6000 words. I'm so pumped for tomorrow!
Check out my blog (and review of the GTW book) @
http://youngwriterscafe.wordpress.com/?s=go+teen+writers
Wow, you're doing great so far!
DeleteIs that total, or just to day? Because if today, then wow.
DeleteHooray Samantha! :)
Delete6000 words as of Monday at 6:30ish when I wandered upon this post
DeleteIt's still god.
DeleteI mean good*.
DeleteStarted yesterday morning with 55,293 words. Wrote about 430ish words since then. Meh. I hope to write more tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteEnding day 2 with 10406 words
ReplyDeleteYaaaay!!!
Whooooooo Alyson!! :D
DeleteThat is absolutely amazing. Lol.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI'm super excited! Beginning a little late, but maybe I can catch up! ;)
ReplyDeleteYou'll be utterly fantastic, Brooke. Also, I happen to live under the impression that any girl by the name of Brooke can accomplish whatever she puts her mind to. (Can you tell I know some awesome Brookes?)
DeleteYou can do it, Brooke! :)
DeleteA tale of woe: I lost over 200 words in an app malfunction. =((((
ReplyDeleteOh no! I hate writers' tales of woe...they're so TRAGIC. D: They usually involve loss of words...gah!
DeleteGod is so good! I got it back after hours of trying!!
DeleteOH THAT IS SOOOO GOOD!!!!!!! THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!!
Delete-Koren
Thanks, technology in your app!
DeleteHOORAY!!
DeleteI am *loving* this praise party! :)
DeleteDoes anyone here find that on the third day of the challenge (for me, I joined on Tuesday), writing is getting so much easier? Usually I write 1,000 words, but since I've started writing 2,000 I find getting to the original 1,000 really easy! :D
ReplyDeleteI haven't written much this week, but when I did Camp NaNoWriMo in April...I was writing over 1,000 words per day on average to meet my goal, so after that writing felt a LOT easier for a while. LOL I got a bit lazy, though, so I'd "write" for about an hour, then check the word count: "What? Only 567 words? How'd that happen?" xD
DeleteGuys someone in my family plugged out the laptop and I lost 1,600+ words :'(
ReplyDeleteGuys someone plugged out my laptop and I lost 1,600+ words, and they were really good too! :'(
ReplyDeleteOH NOOOOO!!!!!!! That's absolutely horrible! It's like, I don't know, losing your laptop altogether! I'm crying for you :(
DeleteAww honey!!!!! :'(
DeleteI know :( thanks guys for cheering me up a bit. I'm quite angry that they did it on purpose, because it doesn't just accidentally fall out, so you know what I'm going to do with that anger? Start afresh from where I was the last day I stead of trying to remember the words I lost, and do 3,000 instead! Never knew anger was so good for motivation, oh I love how therapeutic writing is :')
DeleteYou go, girl.
DeleteI JUST DID 1,000 WORDS IN 30 MINUTES EXACTLY AAH! I just did 3,000 words in exactly 2.5 hours!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually really glad the 1,600 I did earlier got deleted because I came to it with a fresh mind and AGH 3,000! :D
"CAN I GET A WHOOP-WHOOP?!"
DeleteThat's so exciting, Rose!
DeleteWoo! :D
DeleteTHAT IS AWESOME! YAY FOR ROSE!! :D
Delete
