If you've never seen the Disney movie, Something Wicked This Way Comes, watch it sometime. It's creepy, but really well done. The interesting thing about this movie is, in the end, you know what every character wanted, not just the heroes. And when characters want different things, it creates conflict, which creates good stories.

All she wants is to see her family again.

Well...in "Living Rain," my FMC wanted to get the rain back so no one would be hurt. My MMC wanted respect. In the sequel (which I'm currently struggling through getting back to writing), they both want the rain gone and after the midpoint, they want to save *spoiler*.

In my story A Ticket to Yonder, my MMC Jamie wants to go to the magical land of Yonder. In another story, my MMC Valentine wants his life to have a purpose; Melody, the FMC, wants make up for her past misdeeds.

ReplyDeleteIn my camp nano the MC wants power. The others want either love, fame, wealth, glory, to help the poor, or peace depending on who you ask. It's funny because this story I created the supporting cast and main cast specifically so each wanted something different that they're trying to achieve through roughly the same means. I also tried to pick something that wasn't inherently 'good' for most, and a few wants that are generally considered corrupt so that my cast is varied. But those with 'corrupt' wants, such as power, aren't villains.

ReplyDeleteIn my WIP the MC wants to win a war, but her main flaw always gets in the way becasue she is too proud to go and ask for help.
She wants her family to be a whole part again, living peacefully at home without the destruction of raiders.

In the novel I'm currently editing, (working title Pitch Black Stars) Pitch, the MMC, starts out wanting to remember who he is, and then somewhere in the novel (still haven't quite pinned down the exact location yet) it changes to him just wanting to protect the girl he's adopted as his little sister.
ReplyDeleteMy FMC wants to have a happy home in a place free form tyranny. She also wants to be able to do whatever she wants--a flaw that will get resolved.
