Word War Day Five!

Hey all! Shannon here!

We're writing today. All of us. Yes, even you! If you've never participated in a Word War, here's the skinny:

A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.

This word war began on Monday and will end TONIGHT! It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's never too late to join!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the week goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:

1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. Or you can challenge each other to word wars. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar.
Sound fun?! Then join us and write on, friends!

    3. 274 words. My last sentence was: "I only eat the insides of silver elves--the limbs are far too sinewy, you could say."

      Delete
    4. Cool, Aredhel! What was your last sentence?

      Delete
    5. Good job guys! Anyone want to go again?

      Delete
    6. That sentence is just ridiculously you, Charlotte.

      Delete
    7. Mine was "Dragon scales glared up at her from her fingers, and as she watched more appeared from the back of her hand, pushing up like sprouting mushrooms."

      Delete
    8. YES I WANT ANOTHER GO! Are you willing to go a bit longer? :45 - :00?

      Delete
    9. Oh, no worries Aredhel! I got 280 words and my last sentence was "I look back at the table, and the fresh pair of cards that face me."

    10. 321 words. My last sentence was: There was a time when he’d maintained a perfect body--spent every morning killing himself with exercises and training--but, eventually he’d learned that money got you a lot further than aerobics, and he’d let himself expand, one pie at a time.

      Delete
    11. Your sentences are genius, Charlotte ... but I'm determined to at least get close to your word count. Do you want to go again?

      Delete
    12. Awesome! Do you want to go again? I'm here all day really XD

      Delete
    13. Thanks XD sure whenever you like

      Delete
    14. Sure! I think short bursts are good for me, so :10 - :20? That gives me five minutes to fix all my typos ...

      Delete
    15. Sounds good, I think I prefer those too. And yes, the red lines are extremely depressing...

      Delete
    16. Of course, Mary! Good luck you guys.

      Delete
    17. Hey, Mary! Sure come and join :)

      Delete
    18. There's nothing worse than the dreaded red line...

      Delete
    19. 242 words this time. Last sentence: Raina tried to think of a diplomatic way to ask if he was lying dead in a ditch after suffering from considerable pain, but her vocabulary skills didn’t stretch that far.

      Delete
    20. Thanks for letting me join! 291 - last sentence: But something was commanding him, desperately, that there was more to it than that.

      Delete
    21. 233 for me (I'm getting closer!) My last sentence wasn't finished, but in full it reads: When I see them, I have to try not to burst into laughter. Or maybe tears.

      Delete
    22. Nice job you guys! :) Could I join in? I've been kind of slacking on writing... but I'm determined to do it now!

      Delete
    23. Ooh, I really like your last sentence, Mary. It sounds ... dark. In an awesome way. Do you guys want to go again from :25 to :35?

      Delete
    24. Good work guys! And I like the last sentences - Lara yours is actually quite relatable XD

      Delete
    25. Yeah Judy, we'd love to have you!

      Delete
    26. Yay, let's go again! And sure Judy, you can join! I think we're getting some good chunks done

      Delete
    27. I decided to edit one of my WIPs, so right now I'm reading through and taking notes on what is inconsistent and stuff. So while I didn't write anything, I read through 5 pages!

      Delete
    28. 258 words. Last sentence: "I'm not ignoring you, there's just nothing to be said," she snapped in a tone that assured Mordryn that she was, in fact, ignoring him.

      Delete
    29. 206 words ... I really am just rambling now. But that's what editing's for, right? My last sentence was: Has Felix found a way to fix this hand without telling me?

      Delete
    30. Thank you Lara! 256 this time. Last sentence: She turned away sharply, and if he’d been savvy at such things, might’ve realized that it was the first stage of crying.

      Delete
    31. Ooh nice job! Lara - literally, half of what I am reading right now is just rambling. :)

      Delete
    32. Great work everyone! I think I've got time for one more round if you're up for it ;)

      Delete
    33. Charlotte and Lara, your sentences have gotten me really intrigued by your stories!

      Delete
    34. Judy - Thanks for that! I probably need to ramble to finish this WIP tbh

Charlotte - Yeah, that would be great. I'm not sure I can wait five minutes to start though - :43 - :53?

      Delete
    35. Thanks Mary! I'm writing a poker scene right now, so I guess it is pretty exciting ...

      Delete
    36. :45 - :55 sounds good actually. You in, Charlotte?

      Delete
    37. I read another 6 pages! It's funny how easy this is once you make yourself do it.

      Delete
    38. I love poker scenes, Lara! Is it a western?
294 this time around -- last sentence: So they continued to swing their feet, looking at the stars and talking about nothing.

      Delete
    39. Sorry I joined a bit late! I only got 184 whoops XD Last sentence was: Mordryn smiled reassuring and then realised, just as the boy burst out into another terrible wail, that there was still blood on his teeth.

      Delete
    40. 153 words - I got a bit distracted by the Olympic Taekwondo! My last sentence was "We might as well do this properly, right?"

      Delete
    41. You guys did so well! I especially like the dreaminess of your last sentence there Mary. And actually, it's a contemporary set in one of the poshest public schools in the world. My MC just likes poker.

      Delete
    42. Your stories all sound so exciting! I unfortunately have to leave but thanks for letting me war with you!

      Delete
    43. Well done everyone! I have to leave too so good luck! Thanks for the wars! :D

      Delete
    44. Thanks Lara! And that setting sounds pretty awesome. Charlotte, that last sentence has me shivering :) Good luck with the editing Judy!

      Delete
    3. I actually will go until :30

      Delete
    4. Well, it actually looks like I'm going to need to cut it short - at only 99 words *sighs*. Oh well, that's what I get for having writer's block XD. Thanks for warring!

      Delete
    5. You're welcome. I got 445 words, not my best for fifteen minutes. I am currently suffering through a slow part in my WIP, it's not quite writer's block, because I'm finding words, I'm just having a little bit more trouble finding words than normal. Good war!

      Delete
  4. Is anyone up for a war? Maybe from :35 to :50?

  5. Hi guys! This is my first post here and first time joining these word wars. Does anyone want to word war right now?

    1. Hey Miranda! Welcome to GTW! Do you want to do a war from :00 to :15? I need about five minutes to get all my Word docs open and ready to go.

      Delete
    2. Sure! You're working on multiple pieces at one time? Nice!

      Delete
    3. I'm done! Got 230 words written. My last sentence was: "Chin up and shoulders back, I sauntered down the street, my eyes daring anyone to mess with me."

      Delete
    4. Sorry for the late reply...something cam up that I had to take care of. I got 125. Stuck in a tough scene. My last sentence is, "But he does input the number."

      Delete
    5. Nice! I gotta go now, but I'll be back on later in the day. It was nice warring with you!

      Delete
    2. Eh, only 175. My last sentence: "The whir of the chopper overhead makes my heart pound."

      Delete
    3. 335 words! My last (full) sentence was: And then I was whipping two daggers out of their sheaths, flipping them head-over-hilt in the air.

      Delete
    4. Ooo, your story is in first person, present tense? That's cool, Linea!

      Delete
    5. Are you going again, and if so, might I join?

      Delete
    6. @Savannah--cool last sentence! And thanks! I've discovered I really like first person present.

Do you want to go :15 to :25?

      Delete
    7. Er, never mind, I'm going to war with Emma down below, :15 to :30. Have fun anyway!

I have to go now. Thanks for warring with me!

      Delete
    4. You did better than I did, Emma. 207 words... though granted I was trying to figure out how to get my characters not to die right here. Last sentence: Haefgar called in a loud voice and both the ahk-nasom in the chamber and those pursuing were thrown back.

      Delete
    5. Oh, you guys did great!:) Last sentence- they wandered down the hall, turning into connecting hallways as they searched for a place for Vera to stay at.
      -Emmaa

      Delete
    6. Hey, you might want to consider not ending your sentence with a preposition, Emma. "At" in the context isn't necessary: it would hold the same meaning and be more proper if it was just "as they searched for a place for Vera to stay."

      Delete
    7. Oh, thanks so much! I was actually considering that, but I was a bit confused if it was the right place to take it out! I'll fix that right now, thank you!:)
      -Emma-

      Delete
    8. I guess my word count is 394 now!;D LOL! Do you wanna do another word war?:)
      -Emma-

      Delete
    9. Hm, I would, but I think I have to work a few things out before I do. Mainly how to get my characters out of a tough situation.

      Delete
    10. Oh, okay! That's fine!;)
      -Emma-

      Delete
    11. Good job, and thanks for warring, Emma!

      -Emma-

      Delete
    9. Awesome. Yes, cookies are definitely worth loosing a few words over :D

      Delete
    10. Mine: Lightheadedness cradles and tips me back and forth. “We’re here.”

      Delete
    11. Oh, yeah!;D Wanna make up for the "lost words" over another war?:) Or do you have to go?;)
      -Emma-

    20. Can you do another war, or are you done?:) It's fine if you can't or don't want to.;)
      -Emma-

      Delete
    21. I'm actually doing one with Miranda now, sorry!:)
      -Emma-

      -Emma-

    4. 435 words for me. Last sentence: Back they went in a frenzy, and he hoped, as he dashed wildly up the stairs, that he’d left them in the right order.

    10. @Emma: It was fun warring with you!
      @Mary: Sure!

      Delete
    11. 293 this time around. Last sentence: She was stubborn, that was for sure – but then he remembered seeing the library of books and the computer – perhaps she could very well afford to pay him back.

      Delete
    12. Great job! I only got 210. Your story sounds so interesting, wonder what happened! The last thing I wrote was "'Jay, I’m tired of waiting for something to happen. I joined because you said that we would do something, that we would actually change the world. Are you saying it’s my attitude that’s caused the group to accomplish nothing this entire time?'”

      Delete

  15. Word wars are so much fun! I'm sad I had to miss out on this one, but such is life. Thankfully I've been writing at least a 1,000 words each day for the last week and a half or so, so I'm getting *some* writing done.
