I like pretty much all genres (No horror or anything though) however I lean towards Adventure, Historical and Mystery.

My current novel is a Historical Romantic Suspense. I write Christian Romance with pretty much any other genre.
I enjoy reading anything with Christian Romance. It's always a plus if it's Historical. I am fascinated with the earlier times. I love the way they dressed, talked, and, well, I loved everything they did.

ReplyDeleteI'll admit I haven't been on here long, but I'm very glad I stumbled across this place. It's really helped me out developing characters and plot. Thanks for doing all this to help out the next generation writers!
When it comes to reading, anything before the 1800's and I'm a historical nut, though I must admit I'm particularly fond of medieval and ancient history. And while I don't write historical, you can bet more than one culture has weaseled it's way into my fantasy races. The current novel I'm working on is a fantasy with lots of action and fairytale twists (I blame that last part on watching too many Disney classics).

ReplyDeleteMy favorite genre to read is historical fiction. I especially love mystery/suspense historical books.
However, when I write, I usually write contemporary. I am not sure why I write a write a different genre than what is my favorite to read. Maybe because I feel like I do not know enough and do not know how to research adequately to fully give my reader understanding of the time period. Like Roseanna White did. Like Elizabeth Camden. Or Brock and Bodie Thoene. I shall have to work on that.

ReplyDeleteThe genres I most enjoy both reading and writing are mystery and dystopian. I just got my hands on Dorothy Sayer's first Lord Peter Wimsey novel and read it in two days. :) And That Hideous Strength is about my favorite book ever. (Though, I'm not sure that quite qualifies as dystopian...it's really close, anyway. :P) My current WIP is a YA mystery, but I have several ideas for YA dystopian novels after I finish my mystery.
I have a question: would the 4-page critique be the first four pages of a WIP, or could it be any four pages?

ReplyDeleteCurrently, my WIP is a contemporary fiction; so far, I've mostly written contemporary fiction and some historical fiction novellas. However, I'd like to try some other genres (like fantasy) at some point. :)
I don't have a favorite genre to read...I have three! I love a good fantasy - especially high fantasy novels set in another, magical world with rich storylines and prose. (However, I've enjoyed many different kinds of fantasy! :) I also love contemporary fiction with depth; books that deal with issues teens today face. And I can't turn down a good historical fiction, particularly if it's set during the 1900s! I will read just about anything, but those are my top three favorite genres. :)

I'm in the midst of finding a genre that I consistently like, but greatly prefer reading books with strong threads of adventure and suspense. I try to create that in my own books. I primarily write fantasy, after being practically raised on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. However, my current WIP contains dystopic and sci-fi elements as well. I've also written current-day romance, and romantic suspense -- but my calling lies in writing about other worlds, I think.

I started out with fantasy, although I primarily referred to myself as a fairytale writer. However, a few years ago I switched to science fiction and never looked back. The more I immerse myself in it the more irreversible my condition seems to be, to the point where I check out books from the science section at the library that I can't even understand. ReplyDeleteI usually write contemporary SciFi/Fantasy and the rare piece of off-beat realistic fiction, or most often, a mix of them all. Mostly I do novels and short stories, all for teens. (I guess I would say 14-plus-ish?) I like to read these kinds of things too--I'll read anything that has interesting characters (especially villains) that I can connect with, but the first thing I go for is YA SciFI. :)

ReplyDeleteI like many genres, but don't really read sci-fi or paranormal. My favorite to read are the classics (Austen, Dickens, etc.), which was contemporary at the time but is now historical. I also like to read fantasy and some romance.
As for writing, I like ... all. I've tried my hand at contemporary, historical, suspense, even sci-fi. My most major WIP is non-magical fantasy, but I want to write an awesome historical novel someday.

ReplyDeleteI do a lot of online writing. Since I'm a young writer, I feel like I'm using the quick-to-critique edge of the internet as a whetstone. I'm in a science lab full of experiments where there's a crowd waiting to tell me if I'm getting it right or wrong.
Right now I write BBC fanfiction - Doctor Who in particular - and original short stories once in a while. I really enjoy, and plan to write in the long term, dystopian fiction. Also, one of my dearest ambitions is to become a show writer/runner for the above-mentioned TV show.

ReplyDeleteThe genre that I am currently focusing on right now is YA Christian Fiction, but I'm hoping someday I can be Christian Suspense Romance author as well... we'll have to see what God has in store for me! :) I love to read Christian Fiction books, especially if there is romance in it(to be honest, I get a little bored if there is none... :P), and Christian Historical Fiction I adore, though I don't know if I'll ever be brave enough to write it...again, we'll just have to see what God's plan is for me! :)

At a church camp, my writing has been prophesized over, and I feel a great calling in this area of my life to serve my God. I am currently working on a YA Christian fiction novel. ReplyDeleteI like to write mainly fantasy. There's something incredibly freeing about creating your own world, especially when it has magic in it. However I also dabble in a little real world fantasy too. It's all fantasy in the end.
As for reading, I read fantasy (no surprise) sci-fi, and just about anything else apart from horror and romance. One day I'll get the hang of these genres. A new one seems to pop up every day.

ReplyDeleteI have written a fantasy/hisfic hybrid, fantasy, historical fiction, futuristic, and am currently writing a contemporary. Ideas for a western, sci-fi, and more futuristics/contemporaries are in the works as well.
As for reading, I love mysteries, thrillers, historical fiction, old books (think 1800's old) and, well, pretty much anything. With the exception of magical fantasy and steamy romances.

I would have to say that my favorite types of books to read would be along the lines of fantasy, science fiction to adventure novels situated back in WW's (like the Biggles novels).

ReplyDeleteI don't think I could pinpoint a favorite genre. It's all about the individual books for me, the substance of the stories. I've found that is dystopian novels, fantasies, contemporary general fiction, mysteries... (I'd like to say I'll read any genre depending on the story itself, but... paranormal romance just doesn't hold that much appeal to me. I avoid it on purpose. =P)
As for writing... my first novel was a kind of medieval adventure-ish thing, I'm currently working on a dystopian, and I have a few ideas/WIPs for contemporary "Man Who Learns Better" type of stories.

I read a lot. I write a lot. Period. I'll pick up any book I can get my hands on from dystopia to nonfiction. But I'd have to say my FAVORITE is Modern Day Fantasy. I love the thrill of what CAN happen, the POSSIBILITY. I love creating my own world based on possibility. Because there, not even the sky's the limit then. The whole universe is.

I feel like I jump around genres that I write. I enjoy writing YA fantasy as well as dystopia, but also horror and poetry. Right now I'm working on a Dystopian world that explores human disorders and the mind. :)

I write Fantasy, Fiction, Fairytale retellings, spin-offs, and modern translations (I also dream of being a graphic novelist, writing & illustrating them.)Like Stephanie, I can't write anything without a bit of romance (or a lot of it, hehe!)
My favorite books are the Blood of King's trilogy (by you know who!) and Princess of the Midnight ball (Jessica Day George)

ReplyDeleteI read a lot of different genres, mainly fantasy, historical fiction, thriller, mystery, horror... And so on. I just can't decide which one I like better.
I write all kinds of different things too, although I write a lot of short horror stories. I tend to write stories that have a few genres mixed in. Fantasy, historical, thriller, mostly the stuff I read is what I write. I also can't help putting a little bit of romance into it, but mostly I just like putting gruesome horror into it XD.
