Day Four of the Go Teen Writers Word War!

Stephanie here! I can't believe the insane amount of word warring going on here on the blog. It's so fun watching you guys encourage each other and bond over story ideas.

Here are a few photos from writing time yesterday:

I love writing retreats. My Vivofit fitness band, however, isn't a fan. She's been very angry with me.

I'm smiling because I don't know I'm going to get blocked about a thousand words from now...

One final push...

I struggled my way to a smidge over 10k while Roseanna breezed her way through 11,078. She might not describe it as "breezed' but it sure looked that way from where I was sitting. All I know is, I was doing a lot of sitting and staring at my screen while she typed. We have another full day of writing around here before we return to our regular lives.

If you're just joining us on the word war (or if today's the first you've heard of it) here's a quick recap:

A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most in a designated period of time.
This word war began Thursday and will end tomorrow. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's not too late to join us!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:

1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #gtwchat or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot me an email telling me so that I can get you approved pronto.)

  3. Mrs. Morrill and Mrs. Williamson, thank you so much for hosting these word wars! They have really helped me to push through all of my hesitation and make progress on my WIP. I would love to see them become a monthly thing!

    4. Yea. But definitely more than once a year!

    5. Yes! Please! I want to have these SO much more often! They have helped me a ton with writing, I have gotten 9k since Thursday! :)

    6. Maybe there could be another word war weekend in July when a lot of writers will be participating in Camp NaNoWriMo again.

    7. Sounds really good! I would love another mega word war!

  4. If you haven't started I could......an idea is to pick the time and see what you type in that time and come back with it......we don't have to do it in the same ten minutes just ten minutes around the same time.....you know?

    1. 4K in one day? The most I've ever done is a bit more than 2k, although I am hoping for 3k today. Good luck getting that 4k in!

      Delete
    2. 4k is a lot.....wow....good goal! I can only do around 3k on good days.....

      Delete
    3. The most I've written in one day is about 4.8K. I'm only at 1K right now, though.

  6. I've got an event all day (the problem with being a photographer's daughter/assistant), but hopefully I'll be able to write some before we leave and while we're in the car.

    Good luck, everyone!

  7. Just finished a chapter!!!!! I was wondering if any of you had any ideas for an upside-down city? Just wondering.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe the people in the city have "upside-down" ideas. For example, they don't think like most other people or they have opposite opinions from other people. Or even dangerous skyscrapers. The skyscrapers are perfectly balanced upside down on their tips, so one puff of wind, one shake of the ground or one push, could send them toppling down. It might raise the stakes in your story some how.

      Delete
    2. Hmm...upside down city...that sounds really cool! At a restaurant the food could be served at the bottom of the tray. :) Just an idea

      Delete
    3. I like that! The skyscraper thing is really neat! Thanks!

      Delete
    4. That would be funny Alea! I think I'll do that!

      Delete
    5. Word war anyone? I want to squeeze in a couple before I have to go to church :)

      Delete
    6. I could do a short one!

      Delete
    7. It would probably have to be a different world of some sort, considering it would be nearly impossible to stay upside down for that long. They would have to be made out of a different build. Sounds cool!

      Delete
    8. Awesome, Kari. 10 minutes sound good? When would you like to start?

      Delete
    9. I would like it to be in the range of 10-15 minutes. With all times and stuff we could just type the required time and come back with results! I'll leave it up to you!

      Delete
    10. Time minutes? You can just start when you see this message, I'll wait a second.

    11. You actually can control the gravity according to yourself, but......you have to believe that you will live through it or you do die.

    12. Katie, I replied to your email! :) I sent you one of my stories.

    13. Peter, your story sounds epic!

    14. Great job, Kari!

      Delete
    15. Thanks! I'm about to have the upside-down trays!

      Delete
    16. I'm actually surprised that you liked it! I do like putting silly "fluff" into my stories. It always lightens the mood (which is sometimes a bad thing).

      Delete
    17. And walking tables......some of them are very rude! Lol!

      Delete
    18. Sorry, I finished a lot earlier, I just forgot to write back :) 247

      Delete
    19. Oh yeah. That is perfect! I love the idea.

      Delete
    20. Fluff is not always a bad thing. I have this project where the landscape is always something really bizarre. Like a forest made of giant mushrooms....lol!

    21. That is so creative Kari!

    22. I remember there was a movie about that once...but it looked kind of sappy. I'm sure your book will be much better. Maybe It can be kind of like a parallel universe. I don't know.

    A lot of.. stuff.
The main plotline is more fantasy/sci-fi, but the subplots add in mystery and suspense.

    1. Same. I've tried writing novels before, but I would never get as far as 5,000 before they fizzled out. My WIP is 21k so far and I am determined to finish it this time.

      Delete
  18. Yeah, except this one is sort of a rewrite. The first time I wrote it, I didn't have a clear plotline or characters, so I'm rewriting it for Camp NaNoWriMo.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've done that before-tried to write a novel that kind of lost my interest. It's a curse, getting lots of ideas. Right now to dispel all that I keep a notebook and fill it up with novel ideas. I have over 120 right now.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wow! That is a lot of ideas. I used to not keep track of my ideas, but know I do. I learned my lesson the hard way.

    1. That's great, Keturah! I usually write by hand, but I switched to the computer for this weekend, and I've actually found it to work pretty well. :)

      Delete
    2. Yeah, I don't have a computer...just a cell. Is there some kind of app you can download on your phone that counts words?

      Delete
    3. I believe there's one called "Word Count." :)

      Delete
    4. You still have to type it in, though, if you were wanting something that would count handwritten words. Wouldn't that be nice? :D

      Delete
  24. Well, I've spent plenty of time on Pinterest figuring out what my world looks like this morning, which is great, but I need to actually do some writing. Is anyone up for a 30 minute word war?

    1. If you're on, maybe for a fifteen minute one?

    6. Great job, Belle! I got 497. :)

Ah, that's too bad, Robin Hood! But, ya know, trees sometimes need to be dealt with. :D

    7. Awesome, Bluebelle! What genre are you writing?

      Delete
    8. Who knows if you'll see this, but here goes. :D I'm writing Greek-inspired fantasy. What about you?

      Delete
    9. Oh yea...I think you told me that yesterday. Sorry, I've had so many word wars with different people that I mixed up who was writing what genre. I'm writing a sci-fi novel that has to do with space and involves elements of mystery.

      Delete
    10. Ah, that's right. *grin* Yeah, we're probably all getting a tad mixed up. But it's been fun!

    3. If you want names with meaning try, Word Hippo!
