I woke up to find that Roseanna had written a thousand words and had three cups of coffee before I had even opened my eyes. |
Here's where we're spending most of our time. These chairs are incredible. |

And back to it. |
Here's the view when you're sitting in the magical chairs. |
Working dinner. We were girls on a mission! |
We both wrote 10,000 words yesterday and hope to do it again today. How are you guys doing? It's been so fun watching all the word wars happening. I look forward to applauding your progress throughout the day!
If you're just joining us on the word war (or if today's the first you've heard of it) here's a quick recap:
A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most in a designated period of time. This word war began Thursday and will end on Monday. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's not too late to join us!
The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!
Here's how you can connect with each other:
1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.
2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #gtwchat or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot me an email telling me so that I can get you approved pronto.)
I'm off for some math tutoring, but hope I'll be available later. It's day time here. :) So who's writing?
ReplyDeleteWoo!
ReplyDelete10 minute word war @ :10 of this hour.
I wish I was available to write now. :(
ReplyDeleteI'd really like to get to 10K total today. Writing is the only thing on my calender, so we'll see. Quick question. Yesterday you said to use the hashtage #GTW, but today you said @GTWChat. Which one are we supposed to be using/watching out for?
ReplyDeleteThanks! And congrats on writing 10K yesterday. That's a crazy amount of words!

Oh, sorry! I forgot to change it yesterday. On Thursday I noticed there was a bunch of word stuff using the gtw hash tag, so I remembered you had done gtwchat once. So I switched it to that, except I forgot that yesterday. Sorry to be so confusing!
DeleteAnd thank you! I had no idea I could write so much in one day until we did this last year.
Not "word" stuff - weird stuff. Auto-correct :-)
DeleteNice goal. I wish writing was the only thing on MY calender. Oh well...
DeleteHope you reach your goal! Everyone is doing really well!
DeleteThanks, guys! Sofia Marie, this is the one time of year that I get to do this, so I try to take advantage!
DeleteYou guys are morning birds. Lol! I love how encouraging this is. I'm far behind all of you, but it has really helped me get a move on!!!!! Thank you!!!!
ReplyDeleteGonna try for 5,000 today, which is about my record. *deep breath* But gotta try! :)
ReplyDeleteWoke up early to cram some in...1754.
ReplyDeleteDo you guys know how long action/adventure scenes should be? I just wrote an action/adventure scene, and it really wasn't that long. It's the climax of my novel, but I thought that since it's the essence of my story, maybe it should be a little bit longer. I don't know. Does anybody have any advice for me?
Thanks!
~Rcubed~
http://randomrantsrcubed.blogspot.com
I cannot claim to be an expert, but it really depends. If it's a battle it should be longer, but if it's a smaller fight or something else it really depends. Try rereading it. If it feels too short, but you don't know what to do leave it and then go back to it when you do.
DeleteI just did an action scene and it came out to be 800 words. I'm switching viewpoints a lot, so it helps with making it longer. I do agree with the comment above, if it sounds good, keep it. If it sounds rushed, try to draw it out a little more.
DeleteOkay, thanks guys!
DeleteGlad to help!
Delete5,200 for the last two days! These word wars have gotten me so committed to writing these past few days. Thanks to all who have competing with me! I'm having so much fun.
ReplyDeleteNice job, Stephanie! And thanks for keeping us up-to-date with the pictures! So cool. :) I'm not getting a ton done since I'm in Asia for the month and my brother got engaged to my best friend today *squeals*, but I did get around 2,000 written yesterday. :)
ReplyDeleteAwwwww. How exciting!!! And nice job on your word count :)
DeleteCongrats, Aidyl! That's so cool.
DeleteOh my gargoyles, that's so sweet!
DeleteCongrats! I would love to go to Asia!!!!
DeleteHow fun, Aidyl! I'm impressed you were able to write so much in the midst of the excitement :)
DeleteWord wars rock!!!!! I have around 8,436 words myself!
ReplyDeleteI wrote over a 1,000 words last night in just about an hour, which is amazing after the dry spell I've been having! Hopefully I'll find time to do some more word wars today. They really are incredibly helpful.
ReplyDeleteNice job, Jamie!!! Would you like to have a word war this morning?
DeleteMaybe this afternoon after I get some stuff that needs taking care of done!
DeleteI have an acting class from 12-2, but after that's done I'll be available.
DeleteOkay, anyone want to do a word war with me?
ReplyDeleteI could.......I guess.....I might not have that long though.....
ReplyDeleteOkay. 10-15 minutes?
DeleteActually I have to go. Keep writing!!!!!
DeleteOkay, maybe another time then... In the meantime, would anybody else like to?
DeleteI snuck back to the laptop so sure! How about we start at 9:57?
DeleteOr 10:00......you can pick the time though I would like it to be 15 minutes or less....
Delete10:01, for 10 minutes?
DeleteYour on! We should probably just start now!
DeleteTell me when you're ready!
DeleteOops.... I already did it...
DeleteI'm ready right now... *Sheepish look*
DeleteSorry got to go! Got to do chores!
DeleteI got 367.
DeleteI jumped in and did it early too! I got 371 words. How'd you do?
ReplyDelete314, You want to do another one?
DeleteGreat job! And yes, I'd love to do another one. Maybe at 11:30 for 10 minutes? I'm really enjoying these word wars because I've been in a slump with my novel for a couple of months now.
DeleteI meant 10:30. Sorry.
DeleteYou started yet? Sorry, my mom wanted me to do something. I think I'm good now.
DeleteWord wars are great for that, aren't they?
I wish I could join, but I have chores! Keep up the good work!!!!
DeleteYea. I started and I got 418 words this time. But that's okay. Can you do one at 10:50 for 10 minutes?
DeleteYup! Let's do it! Sorry about the mix-up.
Delete430 words. How did you do?
DeleteI didn't do as well as I wanted to this time. Oh well. I got 309. How did you do?
DeleteWOW! You are so fast! Great job, what are you writing?
DeleteThat's great. Your total word count so far for this whole word war event is really impressive. I'm just glad that I had the opportunity to get out of this slump.
DeleteThank you! You'll catch up to me soon enough if you keep at this pace. You want to do another one?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteSorry, I have to eat now. Anyways, it was nice word warring with you!
DeleteYes , it was! Thanks for doing it with me! Have a nice lunch :)
DeleteAHH! I am having writer's block!
ReplyDeleteI personally find listening to music helps with writer's block. As long as it fits the mood of what you're writing.
DeleteI'm trying that and its not working. I think that I have over listened to what I am listening to right now. Have to find more music.
DeleteAlea, would a word war help? Try to think what you would do in your character's situation. Then write about them doing that. Or just set something on fire. That's always good :)
DeleteTry rereading some stuff you've written. I have several projects so that when I get stuck I jump to the next one so I hardly encounter total writer blocks.
DeleteThanks! I could set something on fire...but I need to move my story forward. Its about this girl who lives in 1847 London. Her father is working on inventing Electricity so that they can stop using coal to power everything. Her father gets arrested by the Steamkeepers and the girl finds more about her mysterious city...which may or may not be the real London.
DeleteOoh, fascinating premise, Alea!
DeleteThat's so neat!!!! I don't normally read historical fiction, but I think I would read that!!!
DeleteIts more sci-fi instead of historical fiction because the Steamkeepers are keeping the residents of London in the year 1847 in something called a Time Dome on the planet of Umusi!
DeleteThat's more like what I'd read normally! Steamkeepers is a neat name too!
DeleteThanks! I's stuck on the story for right now though. I'm working on another one right now about a brother and sister who are orphans and are offered a job for this spy agency. Its a lot more interesting than it sounds at first. :)
DeleteJust reached 9,208 words!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! Fantastic job!
DeleteThe Word Wars have really helped me get a move on with my new project!
DeleteThat's so awesome. I hope they will hold more word wars in the future!!! I don't want it to end!
DeleteI didn't get much done yesterday. Or yet today. Lol. I was at my friend's house yesterday and then I had jujitsu today. So... Time to work I guess.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody want to do a 45-60 min word war? I need to get some writing in.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll just write against the clock. I am really hoping to get my first draft done!
DeleteHey, Petra, I realize you may not check this if you're writing against the clock. But I'd be happy to a do a half-hour word war with you. :)
DeleteThank you! I probably won't get much done, though :(. I have hit a writer's block wall.
DeleteIf you want to talk it out, you can email me at rachelleoneilwriter@gmail.com. I'd be happy to help in any way I can! :)
DeleteI would really appreciate it! hang on just a sec...
DeleteI hit a writer's block too, Petra! Then I got this cool new idea for a story so that is what I'm working on. :) Happy writing!
DeleteOk :), I emailed it to you
DeleteI love getting that kind of inspiration! Good luck with your masterpiece (s) ;). Happy writing, Alea!
Delete930 words. I love writing confrontation scenes :D
ReplyDelete~Rcubed~
http://randomrantsrcubed.blogspot.com
Great job, Rcubed!
DeleteI'm just getting started with writing today after doing a little under three thousand yesterday... I hope to be able to do that much and more today. Anyone up for a word war?
ReplyDeleteMe!!!! *Big grin*
DeleteHey there! Happy afternoon. ^-^ Is fifteen minutes okay?
DeleteYes! When? At the :30?
DeleteOkay. That sounds good.
DeleteI got 699. How much did you get?
Delete337! How did you do?
DeleteOH. MY. GOODNESS! I am humbled. Wow. GREAT JOB! You want to do another one?
DeleteGood job! I'm at an easy point in the story. :-) *nods* Let's. For how long?
DeleteOh.... I'm writing a death scene. *Sniff* Fifteen minutes again?
DeleteOh. A death scene. Those are fun. ...Great for inducing tears, especially. I shouldn't have one for another forty-something words at least, in this story. *nods* Okay. Fifteen minutes sounds good. At :52?
DeleteSounds good! Yeah... I'm trying to make it dramatic, so I'm taking my time. haha.
DeleteI got 660. What about you?
DeleteHeh. I've not done a whole lot of death scenes, come to think of it, but the ones that I have done have been pretty dramatic.
469! Wahhhhhh... I feel so sad. Why did he have to die! (I know I'm the one that killed him, but he was asked to be killed. :/) *Uncontrollable tears fall down face*
DeleteThose are always tough.....unless it's some random character.
DeleteNice job! Again...
DeleteYou just have to make death scenes dramatic, there's no other way :)
I have to quickly find a name for one of my characters, but then I'll be up to doing another one if you like :)
Good job! Eheh. You were just telling the story. It's undoubtedly one of the characters' faults. Who was it?
DeleteThat's true. *nods*
DeleteOkay. I need to find a name for a character too (though I was planning on doing it later) so I'll take the time off to do that as well.
I haven't killed main character off yet, but I plan to. My cousin cried when she had to kill off one of hers. It was so sad......
DeleteI just met a published teen AUTHOR! * shrieks and jumps up and down like a girl* !!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's very neat! Who did you meet?
DeleteShe self-published!!!! Emily Chapman!!!!!
DeleteI recognize the name... What does she write?
DeleteCry of Hope!
DeleteIt's historical fiction if that helps!
DeleteI've been on Pinterest LOOKING at inspirational writing things all day instead of writing. Shame on me. Does anyone else use Pinterest as a source of inspiration?
ReplyDeleteYES. What else is Pinterest for?
DeleteRIGHT. I don't even use my original Pinterest anymore. Just my writing one! Haha.
DeleteI only ever got a Pinterest account to do story things on there... I'm not really sure why else anyone would even want one. :p
DeleteHmm, inspiration or DISTRACTION? :D When I look up writing, it's usually helpful. Anything else just makes me stay on the computer too long.
DeleteBluebell-- Both. Definitely both. It probably extends my computer time also, but there are some awesome pictures that just fit my stories so well, being distracted is worth it.
DeleteDo you want to do a word war to get yourself started?
Delete*laughs* I've been branching out, trying to use it for world building. That helps. :)
DeleteIt is pretty neat for world building, though I haven't really done a whole lot of it. What's your Pinterest name? (If you don't mind sharing. If you'd rather not, I'll certainly understand.) I'm Athelas Hale on there.
DeleteRachelle O'Neil. It's my pen name. :) My boards are kind of wimpy right now, but they're there. :D
DeleteI use Pinterest for inspiration ALL the time. (I have to say, I also like using it for other things too :)
DeleteAthelas Hale is my pen name, also... My real name doesn't go on the internet. I've followed you. :)
DeleteIn agreement about it being distracting, but also has been a big help in the past. My username is breakingitbad. I'll definitely check out you guys' boards!
DeleteMy username is just my name :) I have three writing related boards, and the others are just for my enjoyment.
DeleteConsider me thoroughly distracted now. :p
DeleteHelp me narrow it down, Katie. How many followers do you have? Do you know how many Katie Ericksons there are? :D
DeleteHere she is: http://www.pinterest.com/katiegrace2000/
DeleteGuys, stay focused! Hehe. Word war?
DeleteHaha oops. Thanks, Athelas
DeleteThank you, Athelas!
DeleteHeh. Yes. Let's do a Word War.
Delete20 minutes?
DeleteYes! Let's do one!
DeleteTwenty minutes sounds good. At thirty five or thirty seven? Or some other time?
DeleteRight. I made us all distracted :-/ haha. Word war it is. Maybe just a short one? I don't have much time probably until someone interrupts me haha.
DeleteThat sounds good :)
DeleteHeh. Distracted is good sometimes.
DeleteLet's go at 37. Or at the 40.
Delete:37. Will that work, Jamie?
DeleteYes! Let's do this haha.
DeleteAre we just going to go ahead and do it? Or wait?
DeleteI guess we're doing this at :40?
Delete...Now I don't even know what we're doing, so I'm just going to sit this one out.
DeleteI'm sorry, guys! I didn't mean to confuse you. I got 674.
DeleteHeh. That's okay. I confuse easily. Good job!
DeleteWhat did you get, Jamie?
DeleteHah oops. I just got 486.
DeleteThanks!
DeleteVery good, Jamie!
DeleteAwwww. Sorry that you had to sit this one out :( I got got 654 words. I have to go soon, so if we are going to do another one, it should be ten minutes.
DeleteThere's a ten minute one starting soon, if you look down.
DeleteNice job Bluebell and Jamie :)
DeleteThank you, Katie. Great job yourself! :)
DeleteEveryone's word counts are staggering and inspiring!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the planning stage of my WIP, so I can't participate in the word wars. :-( But...I did plot for two solid hours today, which included a lot of historical research and a major plot breakthrough! I discovered my female MC's name as well. She went through two names (close, but misleading) before I found the third, but this one fits her perfectly and gave me unexpected insight into her nationality, hobbies, and personality...interesting.
-The Russian Pianist
That's awesome! Planning can be super difficult!
DeleteThat's awesome! I love when something like that clicks into place!
DeleteAnyone have any name ideas? I need a name for an old mentor. He's short, frail, and feeble. (Not the typical Gandalf sort :) He's a doctor, and I am looking for a more medievalish name. If you have any suggestions, that would be awesome :)
ReplyDeleteHm. What about Dunston? It means "brown stone." So not terribly romantic, but very medieval.
DeleteGerlinde?
DeleteEir? Balint?
DeleteSali? I sort of like that personally.......
DeleteEir is Norse for Heal. There is this cool website called Word Hippo that lets you translate stuff! You might try it if nothing comes!
DeleteOoooooo! Thanks for all of the suggestions! I wasn't expecting all these replies! I'll wait to see if anyone else comments, then I'll choose which one. Thank you so much!
DeleteAldrich literally means wise counselor :)
DeleteAnyone up for a word war starting at 5:00 and lasting 10 minutes?
ReplyDeleteI would be. :-)
DeleteMe too!
DeleteShould we start now...?
DeleteSure! I guess that you like in a different time zone than I do!
DeleteDid everyone do well in the Word War? I did not. I only got about 120 words
DeleteI don't know. It's only four here, but I didn't know what time zone you lived in, so I asssumed you meant the nearest hour... was I wrong?
DeleteGood job! I got 441. I did not expect to get that much...
I got 211. Nice job anyway, Alea. It's better than nothing :)
DeleteI forgot to mark my stopping place, so I have no idea. :D I think it was around 300 or so, but I really don't know.
DeleteI second what Katie said. Progress is always a good thing in word counts, Alea. :) That's awesome, Athelas!
DeleteHehe, Bluebelle. Oh well :) I just realized that I am up to 26,000 words in my story!! Yay!
DeleteGood job, Katie, Bluebell. Thanks, Bluebell.
DeleteOoh, neat, Katie! I'm only at a little over eight thousand right now...
Well, I have to go. I'll hopefully come back later! Thanks to all my awesome word warring partners!
DeleteOkay. Good bye, Katie!
DeleteGreat job, Katie! *high-fives* How many words have you written in the combined days of the word war?
DeleteGreat job! I am at a writer's block right now, so I really didn't get too much done. Maybe I'll try writing a poem or something...
DeleteThank you! Bluebelle, 7,300 exactly. This has been so helpful. (I really got to go now.) Bye! (How about you?)
DeleteWhat's your genre, Alea?
DeleteWoo-hoo! That's awesome for you, Katie! I'm at 6,036.
DeleteSorry, I didn't realize you had to go. Bye, Katie!
DeleteMy genre is fantasy/sci-fi/spy (pretty new addition)/suspense!
DeleteOh my, Alea! Sounds like you've got all kinds of things to work with! Is it overwhelming you?
DeleteOoh, neat. It sounds very interesting! What time period is it set in? Medievalish, modernish or futuristic...ish?
DeleteNo. I guess that I want to write a ton of words today so bad that it won't happen! I haven't had a case of writer's block for a while so I guess I was due...
DeleteWhat genre do you write?
I need help with something I'm doing. I'm doing a fairy tale remix sort of thing, but.....anyway I have every place begin with Never, like NeverWing, NeverFall, NeverRoot etc. I need to name this one place.....It's the fort of the evil witch, Morgan La Fey. If you have any ideas I would appreciate! Thank you for your support!
ReplyDeleteHow about NeverDruh? Druh is "kind" in Czech (I looked it up on Google Translate)
DeleteOkay, this probably won't work, but it's what popped into my head: NeverFlee. :D
DeleteWhat kind of aura does the fort have? Does it feel evil? Or are its looks deceiving? Are there any symbols associated with it?
Mrs. Stephanie, I am quite honestly very jealous of that writing retreat. Those chairs look fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI'm halfway to my goal of 8k for the weekend, so things are doing good! Now it's time to see if I can add another 2k or so to my manuscript before bed.
Would you be willing to do a fifteen minute word war to help you reach that two thousand (And help me do the same!)?
DeleteI'd be willing!
DeleteIs anyone up for a ten minute word war?
ReplyDeleteI would be. When should we start?
DeleteHow about at 4:40?
DeleteThat sounds good.
DeleteOh, I'm sorry. I have to go eat dinner. I didn't realize that. Maybe later in the afternoon?
DeleteOkay. That's fine. Maybe later. ^-^
Delete
