Day Two of the Go Teen Writers Word War

It's an early morning here at the writing retreat. Fortunately we're in close proximity to this lovely place:

Groundhouse Coffee - Gardner, Kansas

How I wish we could all meet at Groundhouse Coffee this morning and write together! (Except this place was built in 1904, and the electrical outlet situation is less than ideal, but since we're dreaming anyway...)

If you're just joining us on the word war (or if today's the first you've heard of it) here's a quick recap:

A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most in a designated period of time. This word war began yesterday will end on Monday. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's not too late to join us!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:

1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTW or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot me an email telling me so that I can get you approved pronto.)

Looking forward to a long day of writing with you!

  1. I wrote about two hundred words today. =) I know that's not as fantastic as the rest of you (ya'll are AMAZING, ALL OF YOU) but I am packing and getting ready to board the plane for america in 10 days. =P But I hope to write maybe a couple words tomorrow. =) (8:03 over here in Papua ;) )

GOOD JOB EVERYONE, KEEP IT UP!!! =D

  2. I'm having a blast with this. 1.3K yesterday; hoping to get at least that much again today.
Keep up the good writing, everyone!

  3. I wrote 3K yesterday, so I'm well on my way to my goal of 15K! But today's going to be busy, so the goal for today is just 2K. Getting more would be great, though. :) I'm really loving this word war!

  10. I wrote 2500 words yesterday, but I'm off to Boise on a Girl Scout trip for three days and likely won't write anything. Be back Sunday night to see how everyone did! Have fun!

His Princess: I'm doing Camp NaNoWriMo this year. It's a lot of fun. Have you ever done NaNoWriMo?

      Delete
    14. No I haven't. To tell the truth I'm a little intimidated by it. I'm not sure I could write 2,000 words a day.

      Have you ever done NaNoWriMo?

      HP

      Delete
    15. It's a lot. *nods* But it's really awesome, especially if you get to do it with other people. The Word Warring makes it a lot of fun, and you're basically immersed in your novel for thirty days. It's insane, but a lot of fun. I've done it three times, and this is my second time for Camp. I didn't succeed last year for Camp NaNoWriMo, but I've managed all the other times I've done it.

Oh, I just realized, 50,000 words isn't required for Camp NaNoWriMo--you could make it less if you wanted to participate, but not do so many words in one day.

      Delete
    16. That might be fun! I might just do NaNoWriMo after all. What genre of book are you writing?

    21. His Princess: NaNoWriMo (as in, within November) has to have 50,000 words, but Camp, which is in April and July, you can pick your word count. It's insane some days, but it's fun. Right now, I'm doing a Science Fiction/Space novel... Which is very unusual for me, as it's the first time I've done something in that genre. I usually do Fantasy. What about you?

      Delete
    22. Good luck with your word war.... I'd love to do another one after you've finished.

      Delete
    39. All right. I'm going to be gone for a few hours, and then I'm hoping to knuckle down and get a couple thousand words in. We'll see how it goes. :) How about you?

      Delete
    40. Up to 900 so far. It's not flowing as well as I'd like it too. I'm kinda stuck on the plot. *sigh* Hopefully some more word wars will help my writer's block later this afternoon/evening.

      Delete
    41. Yeah, I understand completely! I started yesterday with a fight scene, which are difficult to write but do move quickly. Now I'm in a slower section. I'll keep persevering, though! Hey, 900 is pretty great!

      Delete
    42. Thanks! "Just keep writing...Just keep writing..."

      Delete
    43. His Princess: Ooh, that's neat. Historical seems like it would be a lot of research to do. How do you go about that? I have a story that's half-set in the early 1900's, and I've been avoiding it because of the massive amount of research involved.

      Delete
    44. Athelas Hale: Thanks. It is a lot of research and so far I haven't done enough as I should have (I should probably go back and do some more). I go onto google and type in things like "amount of supplies needed for the wagon train" and it might have a list of the required supplies people had to have for the wagon train. Also look for books talking about your time period. And then read them (I have books on the wagon train that I still need to read.) So google and books, thats how I do my research. You could try going to the library and see what they have for your era. :)

What is your book set in the early 1900s about?

      HP

      Delete
    45. When I first started working on the book, I did get some books on the time period, but I decided to set it aside and work on it later. Do you enjoy the research you have to do for your books, or not so much?

Ah... Well, it's sort of a twist on history. It's about a boy who everyone would recognize as an important person in history who is influenced by something out of the ordinary, and who makes different choices that lead to different things. I'm sorry for the vague explanation... This is my secret-project story.

      Delete
    46. Athelas Hale: No I don't really enjoy the research part but I guess there always has to be something you dislike. :) And as for the vague explanation of your book, that is perfectly fine. I haven't been exactly "descriptive" about my book either. :)

      Do you enjoy research?

    13. I have not, it's going to be my first time. I'm excited to try it, though torn with what to write. Not sure if I should start a new one, or go over what I've gone with my current one and continue it. Not sure how far I'll get over the summer.

Ah... I think I'm going to need to back out of this. I'm sorry... Our very new neighbors we haven't met yet just walked over, so I need to go out and meet them. I'll be back pretty soon, though. I'm sorry...

    25. Oh rats... My mom just asked me to fold laundry. That shouldn't take very long, but who knows if I will have to do anything after that. So... I'll have to bow out of this one, hopefully I can come back after that though.

    26. Okay. That's fine... I was thinking I might have to again, since I think I'll be leaving my current position soon, and the internet isn't great while driving. :p
