Day 4 of the Go Teen Writers Word War

Jill here!

How goes it?

We had an awesome day yesterday. Shannon finished her book! Then she went right into editing. Stephanie has twelve pages left on her edit, and at the time of typing this post, I was at 9425 words and still going!

Starbucks WiFi did not work tonight, so I'm typing this post on Stephanie's phone. Totally proud of myself for figuring out how to add pictures...

We're thinking about you all and watching your word wars with great admiration.

How did you all do yesterday? Keep it up! We're rooting for you!

If you're just joining us on the word war (or if today's the first you've heard of it) here's a quick recap:

A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.

This word war began last Thursday and will end on Tuesday night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's not too late to join us!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:
1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot Stephanie an email telling her so that she can get you approved pronto.)

Looking forward to a long day of writing with you!

I finished my book that I've been working on since January :D

  2. Congrats, Shannon, on finishing your book! <3
I wrote 1615 yesterday. What. Every single word of it was in a training scene for a Dragon Rider who, despite being the second-most elite in the group, still has a lot to learn . . . Most fun I've had with this story in a while.

Loving the idea of those 9k words, Jill. >:D

So... I've hardly done any words, but I did 535 words last night, so that brings me to a 1040 words total for three days... I'm going to be busy today though and tonight I'll be at a pre-NaNo planning event session, so I'm not sure if I'll get much done today either. :-/

    17. Evan, writer's block is something where you can't write. You feel uninspired and stuck.

      Delete
    18. Writers block is when you have no idea what to write next.

      Delete
    19. Jessica Johnson: I had writer's block yesterday. What I did was I skipped the scene and went to the next. That helped. Also, what sometimes helps me is listening to epic movie soundtracks (like LOTR) and looking at inspiring pictures on Pinterest

  16. Hello writers! Could anyone give me feedback on the opening paragraph(s) of my story? To give you an idea of the genre, it's YA dystopian, sort of a cross between 1984 and Matched by Ally Condie, if you've read either of those. Here's the opening as it stands:
I settle back in the chair and prepare to have my mind read.
The test administrator says, “Relax, this won’t be painful.” She presses a machine to my forehead and I close my eyes. I’m relieved to hear that my Final Test won’t hurt. I know it’s silly to believe the rumors, but I couldn’t help but wonder. The test administrator wouldn’t lie to me, though. She works for The Culture, and The Culture doesn’t lie.
Thanks in advance, guys. Have a wonderful night!

    1. I think it sounds really interesting and like something I might read. The only comment is "The Culture". Just since I've read the Matched trilogy, it sounds too much like "The Society" to me. Maybe have another name? Otherwise it sounds great.

      Delete
    2. I like it, it makes m want to read more.

      Delete
    3. It's certainly intriguing, a good start for a dystopia, but like Laurel, I'm a bit iffy on the "Culture" thing, though for a different reason (I haven't read Matched, though I have read most of 1984). But when combined with dystopia and given a capital letter, it reminds me of a bacterial culture and I'm not sure that's the connotation you'd like to give. Just my opinion, take it or leave it. It is very intriguing.

      Delete
    4. Your book sounds really good, Alyssa! That is an awesome opening paragraph.

      Delete
    5. Thanks, y'all! Especially to Laurel and Kendra. Kendra, I'm not sure what a bacterial culture is, but it doesn't sound great :) Laurel, I did consider that and if I try to publish, I may have to change some things, including that name. Once again, thanks to all of you! (And Evan, I would love to Word War, but I think I'm a little late for your comment!)

Gosh, that last sentence makes Fear sound like a causal school story.

    12. Fear. Get an A, or you're dead.

      Now it doesn't. ;)

      Delete
    13. Haha. God job everyone! Can I read fear now, Karli?

      Delete
    14. :) In the world Fear takes place in, fear (and Fear the person) are your worst enemy. Currently, it's showing them in the bus talking about tests.

      Delete
    15. Intriguing. Tests are scary things, or so I'm told ...

      Delete
    16. :) Are you home schooled? I am, though sometimes I wish I weren't. Ravenclaw.

      Delete
    17. I'm not entirely home schooled. I take orchestra. Karli used to come with me, but she didn't like it much.

      Delete
    18. Yup, and love it. I'm at the point where it's more of unschooling though. At nineteen, I ought to be graduated ... but I have a bad habit of overstudying a subject and taking twice as long to go through it than I ought to. That and the fact that I let my writing distract me ...

      Delete
    19. Let your writing distract you!... Unless it gets you into trouble. But, write as much as possible.

      Delete
    20. Oh, I do. It's just that now that I'm staring 20 in the face, this whole not graduated thing is starting to be not fun, and people are starting to frown. They don't frown so badly when I show them my four books that I've published, but still ...

      Delete
    21. Four? O.O That's awesome. I'm guessing they're self published?

      Delete
    22. Yeah. Two belong to a series, one is a short story collection, and the other is a (mostly) standalone (it's has some spin-off material) I also have two rogue short stories that are only on kindle at the moment. The book I finished yesterday is the third book in that series.

      Delete
    23. Cool. I'll ask more about them tomorrow, my computer is being really skippy. It's been on all day. Bye, even though I don't feel like leaving... never mind. I have to stay. what are your stories called?

      Delete
    24. Are they on Amazon? Could you give me the titles? I want to take a look at them.

      Delete
    25. They're on Amazon. Sew, It's a Quest; Do You Take This Quest; Saffron's Big Plan and Other Stories (though the stories are also all available individually on kindle), and The Ankulen. CinderEddy and The Sun Jewel Adventure are the rogue short stories without a collection. I'll be putting a few of the books on free for kindle for a few days, when I publish a new short story on the 28th.

      Delete
    26. I'm looking at them on my kindle, and they sound really interesting. Keep up your good work!

      Delete
    27. Just read the preview for CinderEddy, very enjoyable! :)

      Delete
    28. Thanks - CinderEddy will be one of the free ones, by the way. (Since it hasn't been free before ...)

      Delete
    29. What other ones will be for free? I need to make a note to get them; I'm reading the preview for The Ankulen, and it's good so far. YOU WILL WRITE FOREVER! MWUAHAHAHA! Okay, I'm going crazy.

      Delete
    30. Sew and Prior Quest will be free with CinderEddy, then if I can finish the short story I did for the last word war (which is the second Saffron story), I'll have Saffron and Derao, and perhaps Sun Jewel free when it publishes ... maybe December? And then Take and The Ankulen will possibly get a free spin when I publish book 3 in February, we'll see.

      Delete
    31. Yay! I'll have to get them all; your writing is really good!

      Delete
    32. Anyways, I need to head to bed ... shall we war some more tomorrow?
