How goes it?
We had an awesome day yesterday. Shannon finished her book! Then she went right into editing. Stephanie has twelve pages left on her edit, and at the time of typing this post, I was at 9425 words and still going!
Starbucks WiFi did not work tonight, so I'm typing this post on Stephanie's phone. Totally proud of myself for figuring out how to add pictures...
We're thinking about you all and watching your word wars with great admiration.
How did you all do yesterday? Keep it up! We're rooting for you!
If you're just joining us on the word war (or if today's the first you've heard of it) here's a quick recap:
A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.
This word war began last Thursday and will end on Tuesday night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's not too late to join us!
The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!
Here's how you can connect with each other:
1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.
2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot Stephanie an email telling her so that she can get you approved pronto.)
Looking forward to a long day of writing with you!
I wrote 1206 yesterday!
ReplyDeleteI HAVE THOSE RED CONVERSE!!!
ReplyDeleteI finished my book that I've been working on since January :D
That's so awesome, Emily! Great job!
DeleteCongrats, Shannon, on finishing your book! <3
ReplyDeleteI wrote 1615 yesterday. What. Every single word of it was in a training scene for a Dragon Rider who, despite being the second-most elite in the group, still has a lot to learn . . . Most fun I've had with this story in a while.
I wrote 2,217 words yesterday, Congratulations Shannon, and Stephanie because your almost done with edits. :-D
ReplyDeleteOh, and I almost forgot, I finished my story too!
DeleteAnd I almost forgot again, does anyone want a war?
DeleteGreat job, Jessica! :D
DeleteWould anyone like to WW? (I'm starting a new novel, so I might not have that many words :/)
ReplyDeleteI will war too!
DeleteYay! Hm....Want to do :35 to :40?
DeleteSounds good to me, but why so short? Do you mean to :45?
DeleteI was just gonna do 5 minutes, but it's a little late now. Want to do :50 to :00?
DeleteI think I can do it. I might have to eat lunch though.
Delete243 words. Last sentence: Why did it work for him and not her?
DeleteHow did you do?
73. Not bad for just starting a new book :D my last sentence is:
Delete'She hated me, and let everyone know it.'
132 words and last sentence: She sighed and slumped into a cushioned chair, falling into a light sleep.
DeleteGood job! I have to go eat lunch now and probably won't be back on for a while. :(
DeleteBye.
DeleteI hardly wrote yesterday. :( I was stuck on my novel. Now, I have the rest of my book outlined and I should be good to go!
ReplyDeleteSo, with only 134 words yesterday, I really need to buckle down. Anyone up for a war?
ReplyDeleteWe've been warring up there ^
DeleteWar anyone? :)
ReplyDeleteI'll war!
DeleteDay 4 woot!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, y'all! CONGRATS ALL WHO FINISHED STORIES YOU ARE AWESOME!!
Loving the idea of those 9k words, Jill. >:D
So... I've hardly done any words, but I did 535 words last night, so that brings me to a 1040 words total for three days... I'm going to be busy today though and tonight I'll be at a pre-NaNo planning event session, so I'm not sure if I'll get much done today either. :-/
So, who's up for a word war?

DeleteI'd rather do ten minutes, because I need to take a break after that. How about at :22, just to make sure everyone's ready? :)
DeleteYes, it's a fantasy.
Delete:22 sounds good.

Delete131 words. I was in the middle of a sentance when I finished
DeleteI didn't end up writing anything, a solid wall of writers block appeared in front of me and I'm trying to knock it down.
Delete@jessicajohnson wanna word war?
DeleteWriters block...
DeleteI'm going to take a break, too. :) Sorry about the writer's block, Jessica! :( Thanks for warring with me, ya'll!
DeleteIf the rest of y'all are taking a break, this will be the perfect time to finish my HW assignment
Deletewhat is writers block?
DeleteEvan, writer's block is something where you can't write. You feel uninspired and stuck.
DeleteWriters block is when you have no idea what to write next.
DeleteJessica Johnson: I had writer's block yesterday. What I did was I skipped the scene and went to the next. That helped. Also, what sometimes helps me is listening to epic movie soundtracks (like LOTR) and looking at inspiring pictures on Pinterest
Deletewanna word war?

Deletefinished. 105 words done
Delete157 words. Last sentence: She ran out of the building and was back minutes later followed by a few dozen people who kept trying to thank her.
DeleteThe sentence: “This isn't a permanent cure, after we give them a dose they have to take it every morning. | I don't think it's particularly interesting, but I suppose I'm the one writing it.
my las sentence is half finished but it is: " fifteen minutes later their order of one lar..'
Deleteanother WW?
DeleteJessica: Oh, I think it is pretty interesting, it brings a lot of question to mind.

ReplyDeleteWe've been warring up there ^ you're welcome to join.
DeleteAnyone available for a word war?
ReplyDeleteHey, Jessica! How does fifteen minutes sound?
DeleteGood with me!
DeleteAt :03?
Delete405. *shocked expression* I wasn't expecting nearly that much. Apparently I write way more when writing dialogue... :D Last completed sentence: My head hurts from trying to direct her and translate.
Delete164 words. Last sentence: The king got out a small notebook out of one of his pockets, scratching a not onto the paper with a quill that Shadow recognized as the kind that had ink stored within using magic.
DeleteGood job! Shadow, hmm? Sounds like an interesting character. :)

DeleteHey, I've gotta go. But thanks for warring with me!

DeleteThis was really fun Jessica, but I'm going to take a break for a little bit. How did you do?
Nice!
DeleteHello writers! Could anyone give me feedback on the opening paragraph(s) of my story? To give you an idea of the genre, it's YA dystopian, sort of a cross between 1984 and Matched by Ally Condie, if you've read either of those. Here's the opening as it stands:
ReplyDeleteI settle back in the chair and prepare to have my mind read.
The test administrator says, “Relax, this won’t be painful.” She presses a machine to my forehead and I close my eyes. I’m relieved to hear that my Final Test won’t hurt. I know it’s silly to believe the rumors, but I couldn’t help but wonder. The test administrator wouldn’t lie to me, though. She works for The Culture, and The Culture doesn’t lie.
Thanks in advance, guys. Have a wonderful night!
I think it sounds really interesting and like something I might read. The only comment is "The Culture". Just since I've read the Matched trilogy, it sounds too much like "The Society" to me. Maybe have another name? Otherwise it sounds great.
DeleteI like it, it makes m want to read more.
DeleteIt's certainly intriguing, a good start for a dystopia, but like Laurel, I'm a bit iffy on the "Culture" thing, though for a different reason (I haven't read Matched, though I have read most of 1984). But when combined with dystopia and given a capital letter, it reminds me of a bacterial culture and I'm not sure that's the connotation you'd like to give. Just my opinion, take it or leave it. It is very intriguing.
DeleteYour book sounds really good, Alyssa! That is an awesome opening paragraph.
Deletehi???? Word WaR?
DeleteThanks, y'all! Especially to Laurel and Kendra. Kendra, I'm not sure what a bacterial culture is, but it doesn't sound great :) Laurel, I did consider that and if I try to publish, I may have to change some things, including that name. Once again, thanks to all of you! (And Evan, I would love to Word War, but I think I'm a little late for your comment!)
DeleteWord war, anyone?
ReplyDeleteI can do one 10 minute starting at :40, how does that sound?
DeleteSure!
DeleteJust finished my short story with 223 words. Last sentence: “You’ll never cease to amaze me, Robin,” he whispered.
Delete120. Last sentence: Almost every memory she had without her drifted across Shadow's path.
DeleteGood job with your short story!
Deleteword war?
DeleteI'll war! I've only done it once today.
DeleteKarli, I don't know if anyone else is still on, but I'll war with you!
ReplyDeleteOkay! If you're still on, that is....
DeleteI am! :17 to :21?
DeleteOkay!
DeleteI must be the slowest typer in the world... 45 words! So slow... last sentence was, "Okay,"
DeleteI got 123 words. My last completed sentences is, "I think most decisions should go to someone more well-equipped to make them than me."
DeleteInteresting sounding story you've got there....
DeleteI'm writing character journals right now, by the way. And it's OK to be a slow typer! I had fun warring with you, Karli, but I have to go now. Good night!
DeleteWord war Karli? I you don't reply I'll go to the living room and talk to you in person.
DeleteI'll war.
DeleteYay! :40 to :50
DeleteI'll war. And I'll write Fear this time Jess, don't worry.
Delete339. Last sentence: Then a large wildcat hopped down from a tree, and since he was already unnerved by the loosing of his path, Kacy started running blindly.
Delete188 words. Last sentence (incomplete): But here was still her mother and father, and Daniel
Delete137 words. Last sentence: "I really hope I got an A."
DeleteGosh, that last sentence makes Fear sound like a causal school story.
Fear. Get an A, or you're dead.
DeleteNow it doesn't. ;)
Haha. God job everyone! Can I read fear now, Karli?
Delete:) In the world Fear takes place in, fear (and Fear the person) are your worst enemy. Currently, it's showing them in the bus talking about tests.
DeleteIntriguing. Tests are scary things, or so I'm told ...
Delete:) Are you home schooled? I am, though sometimes I wish I weren't. Ravenclaw.
DeleteI'm not entirely home schooled. I take orchestra. Karli used to come with me, but she didn't like it much.
DeleteYup, and love it. I'm at the point where it's more of unschooling though. At nineteen, I ought to be graduated ... but I have a bad habit of overstudying a subject and taking twice as long to go through it than I ought to. That and the fact that I let my writing distract me ...
DeleteLet your writing distract you!... Unless it gets you into trouble. But, write as much as possible.
DeleteOh, I do. It's just that now that I'm staring 20 in the face, this whole not graduated thing is starting to be not fun, and people are starting to frown. They don't frown so badly when I show them my four books that I've published, but still ...
DeleteFour? O.O That's awesome. I'm guessing they're self published?
DeleteYeah. Two belong to a series, one is a short story collection, and the other is a (mostly) standalone (it's has some spin-off material) I also have two rogue short stories that are only on kindle at the moment. The book I finished yesterday is the third book in that series.
DeleteCool. I'll ask more about them tomorrow, my computer is being really skippy. It's been on all day. Bye, even though I don't feel like leaving... never mind. I have to stay. what are your stories called?
DeleteAre they on Amazon? Could you give me the titles? I want to take a look at them.
DeleteThey're on Amazon. Sew, It's a Quest; Do You Take This Quest; Saffron's Big Plan and Other Stories (though the stories are also all available individually on kindle), and The Ankulen. CinderEddy and The Sun Jewel Adventure are the rogue short stories without a collection. I'll be putting a few of the books on free for kindle for a few days, when I publish a new short story on the 28th.
DeleteI'm looking at them on my kindle, and they sound really interesting. Keep up your good work!
DeleteJust read the preview for CinderEddy, very enjoyable! :)
DeleteThanks - CinderEddy will be one of the free ones, by the way. (Since it hasn't been free before ...)
DeleteWhat other ones will be for free? I need to make a note to get them; I'm reading the preview for The Ankulen, and it's good so far. YOU WILL WRITE FOREVER! MWUAHAHAHA! Okay, I'm going crazy.
DeleteSew and Prior Quest will be free with CinderEddy, then if I can finish the short story I did for the last word war (which is the second Saffron story), I'll have Saffron and Derao, and perhaps Sun Jewel free when it publishes ... maybe December? And then Take and The Ankulen will possibly get a free spin when I publish book 3 in February, we'll see.
DeleteYay! I'll have to get them all; your writing is really good!
DeleteAnyways, I need to head to bed ... shall we war some more tomorrow?
DeleteSure! bye!
Delete
