November Word War: Day 1

Stephanie here! Many of you requested that we host a word war during NaNoWriMo, and here it is! If you're participating in the NaNo craziness, we're hoping this weekend helps catapult you into a strong finish. If you're not participating in NaNo, we hope it's still a fun time for you of community and lots and lots of words!

If you're just joining us on the word war (or if today's the first you've heard of it) here's a quick recap:

A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.

This word war begins today and will end Sunday night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's never too late to join!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:
1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. Or you can challenge each other to word wars. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot me an email telling me so that I can approve you pronto.)

Looking forward to a fun day!

    1. Actually I just realized I won't be on at all this evening. Bummer.

  3. I wrote 1033 words in 35 minutes. Because it's Friday, I can't go on right now (although I'd love to, of course). I might be home-schooled, but I have work to do. :-)
Good luck, fellow writers of mine! You can do it!

  4. Eep! I forgot about this . . . good thing I'll have plenty of time later.

  5. Yay! A word war! I've never participated in one so I'm really excited :) :). I'll be on a bit later today :).

    Good luck, everyone!

  7. I am super excited, but unfortunately, I have lots of schoolwork, and then I am booked this evening. May be able to right tonight though!

  8. Anyone around now? I'm in UK time so I don't know how recent the other comments are.

    1. Ah I've worked out which time zone is used. It's EST (Eastern Standard Time)

      Delete
    2. Actually, it's Central Time in the US. An hour behind EST. :)

      Delete
    3. Oh okay. Time conversion sites confuse me :P

  9. I actually finished NaNo the other day, but the novel itself is only about 2/3 of the way through, so I'm up if anyone else is still here! I'm also editing at the moment (the book I finished last war), so I'm patient if no one comes ...

  10. I would love to word war in a little bit! I'm trying to decide how to started the middle book in my fantasy trilogy. Once I do, I can't wait to WW!

  11. Yay! A word war! I have school today, but since it's a Friday, I should be able to word war later tonight.

  12. Yay, the word war for NaNo! I'll be able to in just a little bit. :) I am off to a daring goal of trying to hit the 50K for my NaNo novel before this Sunday, so I have over 7K to write.

  13. I need to finish my story before Monday, and I still have 15,500 to write! Yes very frightening, but I have to finish before I have family coming to stay the night for Thanksgiving. So I am ready for any word war!

    1. Does ten minutes starting at :05 sound good?

      Delete
    2. All right, I got 270. And, if we're doing last sentences (because they're fun) mine was:

“My mom,” the Water Princess interrupted.

      Delete
    3. I got 534, my last sentence was: “What is your recommendation for her care?”

      Delete
    4. Shall we do another, starting at :25?

      Delete
    5. I got 511 and my last sentence was: “Please help me.” How about you?

      Delete
    6. All right. 301. Last sentence: “All right, ceremonies tonight, you’re leaving,” said the Water Princess.

      Delete
    7. Oh, fun. A good dramatic "Please help me" is always great.

Shall we do our next at :45?

      Delete
    8. Sounds good to me. I've got some editing to do while I wait.

      Delete
    9. I have 571, last sentence: The sailor lunged for him, his burly hands out to grasp at him.

      Delete
    10. 295. Last sentence: "It doesn’t happen frequently, but sometimes Jeptha choses to Speak through me, when consulting the Book is impractical.”

      Delete
    11. If you guys go again, may I jump in?

      Delete
    12. 429, and last sentence is: "Time for Carly to get back to work."
...Wow that sounds weird. XD It's a line of dialogue, which always sound odd when they're cut out of context.

      Delete
    13. 587 is my total! last sentence: Shiloh groaned as he turned on his side, his hands tightly bound behind him, he struggled to see in front of him in the dark room.

      Delete
    14. Sure! Anyone else care to join as well?

      Delete
    15. May I? (I'm not sure if you already started or not....if so, can I join in on the next one?)

      Delete
    16. Would you mind if I join you guys on the next one? (Hey Emily! :D)

      Delete
    17. (Hello Patience! It's going to be such fun warring with you again! :D)

      Delete
    18. (Same here, Emily! :D)

      Delete
    19. Can I join the next one as well?

      Delete
    20. 508 is my total! last sentence, involving a new introduced character named, Sparrow: Bowing with mock grace he smiled up at Shiloh with a wink.

      Delete
    21. Join on in, everyone! I got 334 this time around. Not as good, but I think I like what I just wrote better than the first time around. Last sentence: "She leaves her threat hanging, and I just shake my head, trying not to grin too much."

      Delete
    22. Wordcount: 264. Last sentence: “Because no legend plays the same way twice.”

      Delete
    23. Ooo, Kendra, I like that! You guys want to start again at :40?

      Delete
    24. Could we start at :40, and go to :50? (I love your name, Catsi. And you, Melody.)

      Delete
    25. Thanks, guys! By the way, those are awesome word counts. :D When should we start, and how long?

      Delete
    26. You start writing your comment, and several people beat you to it. ;) That sounds great to me, Emily!

      Delete
    27. I missed this past war, but I wanted to say I am so excited that we are waring! I have gotten to only having 12,900 to write when I had 15,500. I totally have hope I can finish this!

      Delete
    28. Whoops, I meant to say 11,900 not 12,900!

      Delete
    29. 257 words. Last sentence: Should I tell the Ice Elves about you?

      Delete
    30. I got 193. Not my best, but the writing has been challenging. :) Last sentence: David's voice sounded nearer.

How did you all do? :)

      Delete
    31. (Let me say two things: I only got to write for half the time. And I'm just starting a new story.)

I'm going I do my first sentence instead of my last. My last is quite boring.

      "It was hard being Queen."

Okay, that one was a little boring too XD

      I got 62. :p

      Delete
    32. 338 this time, with a last sentence of: "And it had felt right, because the table had four chairs."
That makes absolutely no sense out of context. Because I feel the need to explain it, in my novel the MC stops to visit a family of three (a single father and his two kids), and because all of them have family issues--MC's abused, and the kids' mom left them three years ago--it was a really cool thing for all four.
Thus the significance of four chairs. XD

      Delete
    33. I got 338. Last sentence: “You’re clearly upset about the Wind Prince and Leaf Princess."

I've got to go fix lunch for my siblings, but I'll be back!

      Delete
    34. Awesome everyone! Love the last sentences, they are always fun! How about another at :55?

      Delete
    35. You all did wonderful!! And that sounds great, Melody! I need all the help I can get. :) How long?

      Delete
    36. Can't war any more this evening (it's evening over here) but it was fun! :D Bye.

      Delete
    37. See ya, purpledragon! Great writing with you. :)
Got 364 this time around, with a last line of: "I’d taken a liking to seeing the poorhouse worker’s faces turn purple because of her."

      Delete
    38. I have 623, last sentence: “Yes, that is right, you sea dogs, get back to work!” Interesting for me, I have never worked with sailors in my stories but I recently just threw them in. Still getting their dialog down.

      Delete
    39. I got 256 this time. And here's my last sentence (or two ;)): “That’s it, Francie; I’m going to bed now. Goodnight.”

Great job, you guys! Melody, how do you get such high word counts? I am so jealous. ;D

      Delete
    40. My family says I destroy keyboards from my speed of typing, Patience Bledsoe. :-) Anyone interested in another? At :20?

      Delete
    41. Okay, I believe I'm back now. How about one starting at :20?

      Delete
    42. LOL! I wouldn't be surprised, Melody. :) Man, you must fly over those keys! Sure, I can do another. :) For how long? Fifteen minutes?

      Delete
    43. I'd like to join! Are we doing ten minutes?

      Delete
    44. I believe I am ready, I have had to much coffee.... :-D Feeling overly excited and ready to get out words.

      Delete
    45. That probably means you'll beat us, Melody. ;D

      Delete
    46. Oops, missed this one. I was too busy trying to figure out a way to compile word war results so that there's less confusion and more organization... Can anyone tell that I'm an OCD-afflicted INTJ? Haha.
Anyway, here's what I just threw together. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1R_Vj3UyQQBa6lkUSOc_8tGWMOnc5vmvtxNqKQ2U-_G4/viewform XD

      Delete
    47. Just finished with 568, last sentence is kinda weird: “She had something that attracted you to her. What was it? Her eyes? Her long thick hair? Her strong build and warrior spirit?” Sparrow went on with a laugh.

      Delete
    48. That's alright, Catsi! And that looks awesome! :D Fantastic work! *high five*

      Delete
    49. That's awesome, Catsi. :) I'm not completely sure if we were going for ten minutes or fifteen, but I put my results in. :)

      Delete
    50. Aw, thanks guys. *blush* It's probably just easier to use the comments, though. XD

      Delete
    51. Um let's see Catsi ... (Backs up, glances you up and down, clicks on your profile and glances through your blogs ...) Uh, yeah, I can see it. My mom's one too, you're good. I'm an ENFP, by the way.

Anyway, I did ten minutes because no one could agree and I like ten minutes. I'll go use your form ;)

      Delete
    52. And you did it again, Melody! Congrats! :D I got 172, and my last sentence is: "I’ve been longing for this, David.”

      Delete
    53. Oh, Catsi Eceer, I totally get the OCD thing, I am ISTJ and understand totally!

      Delete
    54. LOL, Kendra. :)

Glad you guys like it. ^-^ Nothing better than my ideas being put to good use.

      Delete
    55. Sure, Catsi!

      Delete
    56. 297--which isn't too fantastic, but I just hit 30,000 words on my novel! I'll finish NaNoWriMo yet. :D Last line: ""Here we are," I say, shivering uncontrollably now."

      Delete
    57. Keep it up, Catsi! Anyone want to war at :00?

      Delete
    58. ENFP party! (I think I've seen an ENFP board of yours on Pinterest though, so I can't say I'm quite surprised)

Anyways, I got 301, last sentence: “Ah, at last I hear a vote of confidence from your lady!” cried the Wind Prince, and Andrew winced at the glare she shot him.

And I've got to go help my brother with his schoolwork, but I shall return. I've written over 2,000 words already today, compared to the last few days when I haven't even hit a thousand. (The day before, I broke my record and wrote 7,000 and finished NaNo)

      Delete
    59. Sorry I'm a little late - GTW isn't cooperating. I got around 168 - I say around, because I couldn't exactly remember where I had begun. ;) My last sentence: My eyelids drooped lower and lower, and at last, they closed altogether.

How did you all do? :)

      Delete
    60. Awesome, guys! Keep up the fantastic work!! You can do it! :D I've written almost 2K today, so just over 1K left to go. :)

      Delete
    61. I'm actually going to bow out of this one... I'll join the next.

      Delete
    62. 429. Last sentence: "Yes," Freidrich said.

      Delete
    63. 575, last sentence: Asenath panted staring wildly up at the ceiling, enduring the pain, every passing second felt like an hour.

      Delete
    64. Well done, Melody! I like your character's name...

      Delete
    65. Back again, didn't have time to say I was joining in at :00. :) Anyway, I got down 209 words. Last sentence was: "He was a good man." She said, pulling her scarf back over her face.
      And now I'm off again.

      Delete
    66. 946 early this morning! Not sure if this one's still going:)

      Delete
    67. I am down to only 9,954 words left in my novel! Thanks for the support, guys! I love being able to hang out and war with you all!

      Delete
    68. Back! shall we have another war at :00?

      Delete
  14. I have school to do right now... But I am trying to get it done quickly so I have plenty of time to Word War this afternoon. :)

    2. Hey, Jessica! :D Does ten minutes sound okay, at the :12?

      Delete
    3. (I'm pretending that I participated in this one rather than one two minutes ahead)
I got 272. Last sentence: “A myth in our world, which Rich and I believe inspired the building of this table.”

      Delete
    4. Hang on ... I no longer know what I'm talking about anymore ... misread that. Oh, well. Anyways. Guess I'll go edit until you finish with this war.

      Delete
    5. Or Kendra, do you want to do one with me right now?

      Delete
    6. Sure, though :22 sounds like a good time to start at. Ten minutes?

      Delete
    7. I have to leave soon... although it's short is five minutes okay starting at :22? Or I can do ten minutes starting at :20...

      Delete
    8. I got 493. Last sentence: The train tracks seemed to stretch on for eternity, dipping at the horizon to meet the suddenly lowering sun. How did you do, Jessica?

      Delete
    9. Okay, 242, are we doing last sentences?

      Delete
    10. You did well, Kendra! :D As long as it's for ten minutes, I don't think timing really matters that much...

      Delete
    11. “And I suppose you used illegal trading to get hold of those crystals. Tell me, who could have set that curse on you? Do you have any enemies? Some wizard that you offended badly?”

      Many sentences, but whatever.

      Delete
    12. Well done, Jessica! :) Sure, go ahead and post your last sentence!

      Delete

    17. Sounds good! Thanks, Jessica. :)

      Delete
    18. 688
Last sentence: Although they were my parents once I got past a certain age it was my job to take care of myself.
I have to go but this was fun! Thanks for warring with me!

      Delete
    19. All right, for Lauren's and mine, I got 251 (started a bit late and had a chapter change) and my last sentence was: Clara had no idea what that meant, and wasn’t sure she liked the sound of it, but at that moment, everyone else stood up and began filing

      Delete
    20. I got 269... *winces* My computer crashed half-way through and took a couple of minutes to start back up again. How did you all do?

    36. Great job Katie and Linea!

      Delete
    37. Nice job, Athelas and Ana! You both have impressive word counts. :)

      Delete
    38. 178, a little bit of writers block delayed my writing. Last sentence: “I can understand a few things that you are thinking right now, which means my curse is quite near. We should stand.”

It's a few sentences again, but it makes more sense when they're all together. Good job!

      Delete
    39. No it's fine :) maybe :05 to :15? What would work for you?

      Delete
    40. Good job, Jessica. I'll do the ww at :05!

Jessica: You keep mentioning a curse in your sentences... You make me curious. What is your story about?

      Delete
    47. Great job, everyone! Wow, Laurel! That is an AMAZING amount of words! Do you have superpowers or something?

      Delete
    48. Jessica: xP Okay.

Does anyone want to do another Word War?

      Delete
    49. Awesome job, guys! Is anyone up for another one? :)

      Delete
    50. Ana - first of all that is my middle name and like my favorite name on the planet (in addition to Laurel, of course :) ) and second of all I'm at a really good part in my story and my hands have been magically typing super fast and I don't understand how it happens but it does and I just accept it and keep magically typing. So yes, I have superpowers. :)

      Delete
    51. Hi, Patience! I'm up for another. :)

      Delete
    52. *waves* Hello, Jessica and Athelas! :)

      Delete
    53. I'm going to sit out and read something. I'll join the next one.

      Delete
    54. Haha, that's awesome, Laurel. Hopefully it'll stay that way for you. I think I'll sit this ww out, but I might join in later tonight.

      Delete
    55. What time, and how long should we go for? :) See you later, Jessica!

      Delete
    56. Okay. Good bye, Ana and Jessica! I look forward to perhaps warring with you both later. :)

      What about :28 to :38?

      Delete
    57. So sorry I vanished on everyone. I got a critiquing email and had to take care of that, and now I have to go get ready for an event. I'll try to be on tomorrow.

Have fun warring, everyone! Word wars are now like my favorite thing on here. :)

      Delete
  21. I'm here! Anyone around to war for ten minutes or so?
