Last week, I spent several hours cleaning my book area. I am down to 50 copies of Replication in hardcover! (I once had 500 copies, so this is a big deal for me.) This is the original book that you see pictured below.
I want to get rid of these!!!
Why, you ask?
Because my publisher sent me author copies of the paperback version with the new cover, but I don't want to take them to conferences to sell until all the hardcover books are gone.
So I'm going to give these away to the first 50 people who order them through my Square store. They are free, but it costs me $3 to ship them. So you'll still have to pay $3 to get the book. But $3 is a great price for an autographed (personalized) hardcover (now limited) edition of a book.
Anyone need some Christmas presents?

Today's quote comes from one of my characters.
I remember writing that line and smiling, fighting back a chuckle at Martyr and how he'd come alive. Today I want to ask you all to share in the comments a quote from your work in progress that you are particularly proud of and/or a favorite quote from a published novel.
“How disgraceful,” he muttered to himself. “I used to be a royal assassin. Now I’m in an elvish inn speaking with mad men who have lost their minds.”
ReplyDeleteThis is a quote from Dorlin Hull to Borifas, when he first met him. I've only written one and a half chapters of this book, but it's something I'm particularly proud of. One more quote from a villain:
"Good. Make sure you leave no soul alive…Failure is unacceptable, apprentice. Disappointment comes a stiff cost. I shall be gone for a few weeks; take care of the job while I’m gone. It’s time to finish this *the way it started.*”
He smiled again. “With fire.”
Creepy, huh? It's the ending hook of chapter one. Another one of my favorites is this - “Ever the gentleman, aren’t we? I’m in charge of these halls and unless you wanna be kicked out, fella, you better scoot real quick.”
It's from a minor character, and it's where I roughly left off in my manuscript yesterday. I remember smiling and thinking with rue what Dorlin was about to do to him. *Winces*.
That's all I have from my WIP so far. Though I have some favorites from my past work too but if I were to list them it'll take all day...
One more from my WIP: “Oh, I hate it when she does that,” he said. I wrote it a few days ago and it' when Gren'eldorf is sprawled on the floor and Henisky the witch has stormed out of his house and creating a mess of it. It used to be scene one, but I've changed it to scene two now. Hopefully I'll finish scene one today!

Favorite quote is from The Help: "You is Kind, You is Smart, You is Important."
Okay, so I actually have two that I couldn't pick between. Background: my MC has been verbally abused her whole life, so these aren't pleasant quotes, but I like them.
ReplyDelete"I am the abuser. She is the abused." This comes at the end of a particularly tense scene, and I'm very proud of the way it bring the scene to a close.
"There you are, you little devil child! I'll teach you to hide from me!" I have a really weird reason for being proud of this one. I remember I was so happy with this line when I wrote it. Having never been abused or been an abuser, I was elated that I could come up with a powerful line from the mouth of the abuser (my MC's mother).
That's neat. I already care about the MC. :)

Main guy: “It’s a horse. Doesn’t have a name.”
Main girl's little sister: “Every horse needs a name. I named him Blizzard.”
I absolutely love this section of dialogue and I love how the characters are so clear in it.
I love that you have horses! Every story needs a horse. :)

I think that every character Elizabeth Wein writes is really quotable. I especially love this quote from Rose Under Fire, which is narrated by Rose: “Incredible. It is just incredible that you can notice something like that when your face is so cold you can't feel it anymore, and you know perfectly well you are surrounded by death, and the only way to stay alive is to endure the howling wind and hold your course. And still the sky is beautiful.” It's so beautiful and metaphorical.

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite things about dialogue in my novel so far is that it's set on earth, so I get to make references to a bunch of my favorite geeky things. A few of my favorite lines where I reference stuff:
MC's younger sister: "That's the sixth time this week you've invoked the shiny object. What's the secret?"
(Explanation: "shiny object" is a reference to a webcomic I and my characters read. My MC and her sister use it as code for "I don't want to talk about this; change the subject.")
MC's sister: "What's so funny?"
MC: "Star. Turning black."
MC's sister: *grinning/giggling* "Should we think of beetles while he's gone, and other things like that?"
(Explanation: My characters are reporting to a duke, whose office door is marked with a silver star. That made me think of The Thirteen Clocks, so I decided the star was turning black because of age or whatever. My MC picked up on it, and then this happened.)
MC's (boy)friend: "What's a world or two, Lady Kate? What was that quote you said once? Ah, yes. 'Death cannot stop true love. It can only delay it for a while.' I think that goes for portals as well."
(Yes, he's from another world, and yes, he just quoted The Princess Bride. It was lovely.)
I'd like to quote basically everything said by Puddleglum, but I best put down one sentence: "I'm on Aslan's side even if there isn't any Aslan to lead it."

I am currently thinking of writing a fanfic for bbc's merlin but have it so that it is set in modern day with the descendants of the original characters, except for merlin (who is still alive) and Arthur (who merlin managed to bring back after hundreds of years of searching for a way). a quote I was thinking of would be between Arthur, merlin and gwaine's descendant nica.
