Share Your Favorite Character Quote

It's getting close to the end of the year, which for published writers, means inventory. At the end of each year I must count the copies of the books in my house to report on my taxes.

Last week, I spent several hours cleaning my book area. I am down to 50 copies of Replication in hardcover! (I once had 500 copies, so this is a big deal for me.) This is the original book that you see pictured below.

I want to get rid of these!!!

Why, you ask?

Because my publisher sent me author copies of the paperback version with the new cover, but I don't want to take them to conferences to sell until all the hardcover books are gone.

So I'm going to give these away to the first 50 people who order them through my Square store. They are free, but it costs me $3 to ship them. So you'll still have to pay $3 to get the book. But $3 is a great price for an autographed (personalized) hardcover (now limited) edition of a book.

Anyone need some Christmas presents?

No more than one copy per order/person/address and I can't mail them internationally for $3 shipping. So if you live internationally and want one, we'll have to figure out what the international shipping cost is. If you're interested, click here to see the free copy of Replication in my bookstore.

Today's quote comes from one of my characters.

I remember writing that line and smiling, fighting back a chuckle at Martyr and how he'd come alive. Today I want to ask you all to share in the comments a quote from your work in progress that you are particularly proud of and/or a favorite quote from a published novel.

159 comments:

  1. “How disgraceful,” he muttered to himself. “I used to be a royal assassin. Now I’m in an elvish inn speaking with mad men who have lost their minds.”

This is a quote from Dorlin Hull to Borifas, when he first met him. I've only written one and a half chapters of this book, but it's something I'm particularly proud of. One more quote from a villain:

"Good. Make sure you leave no soul alive…Failure is unacceptable, apprentice. Disappointment comes a stiff cost. I shall be gone for a few weeks; take care of the job while I’m gone. It’s time to finish this *the way it started.*”
    He smiled again. “With fire.”

Creepy, huh? It's the ending hook of chapter one. Another one of my favorites is this - “Ever the gentleman, aren’t we? I’m in charge of these halls and unless you wanna be kicked out, fella, you better scoot real quick.”

It's from a minor character, and it's where I roughly left off in my manuscript yesterday. I remember smiling and thinking with rue what Dorlin was about to do to him. *Winces*.

That's all I have from my WIP so far. Though I have some favorites from my past work too but if I were to list them it'll take all day...

    1. One more from my WIP: “Oh, I hate it when she does that,” he said. I wrote it a few days ago and it' when Gren'eldorf is sprawled on the floor and Henisky the witch has stormed out of his house and creating a mess of it. It used to be scene one, but I've changed it to scene two now. Hopefully I'll finish scene one today!

  3. A quote from the children's book I'm writing:

‘Now, why on earth are you crying?’ asked Jamy, frowning sternly. ‘Stop bawling. You only need to cry when you have to. I know how we’ll save your brother – you know it will end right. We’re in a book, and books always end well.’

I know. You think I'm weird.

Idina shifted the bag around, wrinkling her nose a couple of seconds later. “Don’t you just love it when some people eat all the chips but are too lazy to dispose of the bag, so all they leave is the dust?”

It fits Idina so perfectly. :) Thanks for this fun little "prompt", Mrs. Williamson!

I didn't want him to think I was some helpless girl in need of being coddled.

(Here's a sad one. Let me explain: when the girl character gets mad at this one guy , she says his name angrily. And right now, he's dying.)

    "Percy!" I yelled, feigning anger.

"I'm afraid I can't stop what's happening this time." (He replied)."

  10. Can't think of any character lines from other books right now (this always happens when I want to think of something specific from a book D:) But here's one from my 'casual' WIP about a family of foxes:
    "Stop acting like savages."
    "What's a savage?"
    "Something disgusting."
"I bet you don't know what it means."
"Yes I do! It means what you are *obviously*!"
(slightly altered since it's in the middle of an argument and it would take too long to post the whole scene.)

    Doctor: How are you feeling?
MC: *thinks: Terrible. Like a herd of wild horses trampled me, and then came back with a carriage apiece and did it again.* I'm fine.

MC: I'm looking for a friend.
Jailer: And you think he's here? Might want to think about finding some new friends.

Henchman: Put him in the cellar? Don't you think that's a bit cliche?

  19. Okay, so I actually have two that I couldn't pick between. Background: my MC has been verbally abused her whole life, so these aren't pleasant quotes, but I like them.

"I am the abuser. She is the abused." This comes at the end of a particularly tense scene, and I'm very proud of the way it bring the scene to a close.

"There you are, you little devil child! I'll teach you to hide from me!" I have a really weird reason for being proud of this one. I remember I was so happy with this line when I wrote it. Having never been abused or been an abuser, I was elated that I could come up with a powerful line from the mouth of the abuser (my MC's mother).

  20. Love Replication! :)

Here's a section of dialogue from one of my works in progress (Just dialogue, everything else taken out):

Main girl's little sister: "Your horse is all fed and happy. Nice and cozy. What’s his name?"
    Main guy: “It’s a horse. Doesn’t have a name.”
Main girl's little sister: “Every horse needs a name. I named him Blizzard.”

  21. Here is my favourite quote from my WIP 'Aimlessly Wandering' said by my character Claire

"This was my life, my only goal in life constantly shattered. So I just wander. Aimlessly. No goal in life, nothing to aim for. Just living....This was living right?"

  22. I think that every character Elizabeth Wein writes is really quotable. I especially love this quote from Rose Under Fire, which is narrated by Rose: “Incredible. It is just incredible that you can notice something like that when your face is so cold you can't feel it anymore, and you know perfectly well you are surrounded by death, and the only way to stay alive is to endure the howling wind and hold your course. And still the sky is beautiful.” It's so beautiful and metaphorical.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ooh! Replication! Not my favorite of your books, I'll admit, but still good. *nods*

One of my favorite things about dialogue in my novel so far is that it's set on earth, so I get to make references to a bunch of my favorite geeky things. A few of my favorite lines where I reference stuff:

MC's younger sister: "That's the sixth time this week you've invoked the shiny object. What's the secret?"
(Explanation: "shiny object" is a reference to a webcomic I and my characters read. My MC and her sister use it as code for "I don't want to talk about this; change the subject.")

    MC's sister: "What's so funny?"
    MC: "Star. Turning black."
MC's sister: *grinning/giggling* "Should we think of beetles while he's gone, and other things like that?"
(Explanation: My characters are reporting to a duke, whose office door is marked with a silver star. That made me think of The Thirteen Clocks, so I decided the star was turning black because of age or whatever. My MC picked up on it, and then this happened.)

MC's (boy)friend: "What's a world or two, Lady Kate? What was that quote you said once? Ah, yes. 'Death cannot stop true love. It can only delay it for a while.' I think that goes for portals as well."
(Yes, he's from another world, and yes, he just quoted The Princess Bride. It was lovely.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'd like to quote basically everything said by Puddleglum, but I best put down one sentence: "I'm on Aslan's side even if there isn't any Aslan to lead it."
and what about this scene from Dragonwitch: "What you believe cannot affect the truth of the matter." "Cannot the same be said for unbelief?"

And here is something from my writing:
'Helena was the most clever, elegant, and beautiful princess in the world...she was also evil.'

  26. Yay! *runs off to buy Replication* I've been wanting to read this one for a while now, after reading an excerpt on your website! I'm excited for it to get here!

Hmm, favorite quotes from my WIP... Here's a piece of dialogue I'm proud of: "You have had a hard life." She blinks away the tears. "Despite all your wealth and privilege." Her gaze pierces mine. "And I am sorry for it, monsieur, for it has made you a sad and bitter man."

  30. In my personal WIP, my favorite character quote is either...

My roommate smiled at me and said, “This is my second year here. I’ve never seen you before, so it must be your first, right?”
“No, I’ve been here since the day it opened. What do you think?”

    or...

    “That’s an interesting name.”
“So’s Topaz,” I countered, raising an eyebrow in annoyance. This was exactly what I’d expected. They were even speaking in unison. Definitely robots.
A smile slid across Topaz’s lips. “My name’s actually Topaz-Marie, but I think that’s a silly name, so I just go by Topaz so I don’t sound weird.”
“Why not just go by Marie? It’s definitely more common than Topaz.”
She stared blankly at me. Again. “But Topaz is a pretty name.”
Sierra rolled her eyes. “She’s just being annoying,” she said to Topaz, like they were best friends who always stuck up for each other or something stupid like that.

  31. Hmmm, in my personal WIP, I like this line. I won't find any others at the moment because i have homework to do, but here.

  32. From my own NaNo project (honestly, the rest of the dialogue is pretty bleh, but the whole subplot with Heidi might be cut...):
    ***
“Good morning,” Heidi says. “By wishing you good morning, I mean that it is one whether you like it or not, and I don’t particularly care if you’re good. I won’t even tell on you if you decide, perhaps, to smoke a pipe of tobacco.”
    We keep staring.
“Why yes, I do know how to talk, thank you very much. I’m a very smart pig.”
Yup, that pretty much sums up Heidi.
“Well then,” I say. If I turned around a bit, I could look her in the eye. I’ve never been tall enough to look her in the eye before. “Would you like to be called Wilbur or dinner?”

  33. A few lines I enjoyed writing between the MC's six-year-old cousin (Alexa) and her brother (Jacob).

Jacob sighed. “It’s a special secret,” he said at last. “You have to promise you won’t tell anyone. Not even your teddy bear.”
Alexa looked confused. “But I don’t have a teddy bear.”
Jacob threw up his hands. “It’s a figure of speech!”
    “A figure of what?”
Sarah (MC) clamped her lips together again.
“Never mind,” Jacob said. “Just don’t tell anyone.”
Alexa solemnly drew an “x” across her heart. “I promise,” she said. “So what is it?”

  36. A serious line from a fanfic I'm working on:

I locked eyes with Dartagnan. "You could be killed."
He tilted his head in a half-shake. "We both know that would be a best-case scenario."

    And a humorous line...

"Are you supposed to talk to that kind of program?" Watson leaned over and whispered the question in my ear.
"I don't know," I admitted. "It hasn't talked back yet."
Watson straightened and looked back at Dawn. "That could be a nice feature."

  37. Fun idea! Here's a quote from my novel-in-waiting:

    “Indulge in self-pity. It’s you.”

And from the epic novel GOLDEN GAUGHTER by Anne Elisabeth Stengl: "She didn't like me. I thought she'd say, 'Oh, look at the fluffy sweetness!' and fold me into her arms. Instead she drew a knife on me!"

    1. I love Anne Stengl! I recently finished Moonblood and can't wait to read the rest of the series. And that quote is hilarious!

  38. I love seeing everyone's quotes! Here's my favorite line from my first novel, Unperfected, said by my main character, Avalon.
"The only problem with looking like my mother is that sometimes, when I look in the mirror, she's all I see. And then the sadness creeps in and I don't want to look anymore."

  39. "September ran. The sky behind her had gone an icy, lemony-cream color, pushing the deep blue night aside. Dew and frost sparkled on the Worsted Wood, clinging to the silken puffs like stitched diamonds. Her breath fogged. Leaves crushed and rustled beneath her feet. She ran so fast, so terribly fast - but she feared not fast enough."

  40. I suppose one that stands out from one of my yet-to-be-written novels is:

"We did not choose you because we believed you would not err. We chose you because we believe you are the least likely to err."

That is what the stressed-out general's esquire tells him.

  41. This is from my WIP:

“Don't play games with me, old man.” Her eyes flashed. Eleni had never seen her look so angry before. “The books,” she hissed. “How dare you bring such … such vulgar material into my house!”

“You mean, my house? And what will be Eleni's house when I'm gone?”

Aunt Tilna's nostril's flared and veins bulged from her thick neck.

“But I do apologize for offending. Now, what have you done with my possessions? Burned them? I do hope not, as I was hoping to teach Eleni some of that vulgar material.”

And two from random scenes that popped into my head:

"She's like, the complete opposite of any normal child. She eats the chocolate part of the Oreo and puts the middle back."

"I, being terribly shy, didn't want to bother the birthday girl's mom, and I didn't want anyone to see me cry. So what did I do? I hid in the bathroom. For three hours.

After that, bathrooms and I became very good friends."

  44. I am currently thinking of writing a fanfic for bbc's merlin but have it so that it is set in modern day with the descendants of the original characters, except for merlin (who is still alive) and Arthur (who merlin managed to bring back after hundreds of years of searching for a way). a quote I was thinking of would be between Arthur, merlin and gwaine's descendant nica.
Arthur- merlin you realise there is a pile of clothes in my room that haven't been washed yet.
    merlin- and?
Arthur- well I'm not going to wash them, I'm a king
nica- oh really that's funny cuz I was just telling merlin my big secret wasn't I merlin?
merlin-you were... I mean yeah she was
nica- yeah I was telling him how I am actually a fairy. wings, sparkles, all of it- the whole gloriously repulsive package. cuz that couldn't be any more of a lie than you being a member of the royal family could it? and as a king you couldn't possibly wash your own clothes, I would magic them all clean but it seems you already have your best friend acting as your own personal flying monkey. ... you've just earned yourself a nickname ...princess
Arthur- wait did you say you were an actual fairy? what... merlin why are you laughing?

  46. A little late, but one of my favorite quotes from my book is:
"Sometimes I really don't like your optimism."
*shrug* "Most times I don't like your pessimism."

  47. Here is another one I came up with:

"Life is roses and snowmen.... but roses have thorns and snowmen melt."
