Day One of the June Word War

Hey, writers! Stephanie here. This week on the blog, we're holding a word war.

Is this the first you've heard of a word war? If so, here are the details:

This word war is a friendly competition to motivate participants to write as many words as they can between now and Friday.

While some word wars are shorter (fifteen minutes or an hour) and strict, this will instead be a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war. So start when you want and participate whatever days you can. There are no hard and fast rules. This is about encouraging each other and writing a lot of words. It's that simple.

How you can connect with each other:

1. You can connect in the comments section of the blog. There will be a post every day, and we'd love for you to keep us updated on how the day is going for you. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. Seeing everyone's posts will help to encourage each other in knowing that we're all hard at work.

If you want to break the time into smaller word wars, you can post that in the comments section too. For example, you could arrange a word war from 1:00 to 2:00 with a few people.

2.You can connect on social media. On Twitter using the hashtag #wordwar or on the Go Teen Writers Community Facebook Group. This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot an email to GoTeenWritersCommunity(at)gmail.com telling them so they can get you approved.

Happy writing, everyone!

    2. Does that mean whoever writes the most in the chosen time wins? Thanks!

      Delete
    3. Gisela, no one really "wins" in the big word war. It's just for encouragement! But if you want to announce winners in the smaller ones, you can always do that.

  2. So we just write ... then we comment how much?

    1. Yes! The idea is that you'll know lots of others are writing, and it'll give you extra motivation. Also you can cheer each other on through out the day.

Here's a link to one we did before. If you scroll through the comments, you can see the way the writers organized mini word wars through out the day:

    2. 391! You win, great job! *highfive*

Here's my last sentence: And suddenly, now that they were safe … Raven was angry. Angry about all the questions Cerulean had never answered, all the secret things he had done and all the help he hadn’t given them when they had needed it most.

      Delete
    3. Ooh great job!! That's an awesome sentence! Mine: Oh, how Belle wanted to fly at him; but she didn’t, knowing his strength could kill her in a single movement.

    4. Now I'm really interested in your story :D. Does it have a title?

      Delete
    5. "Happily Never After" :D

      What's yours called?

      Delete
    6. Ooo, neat title! Mine is 'Killing Snow' (it's a Snow White retelling).

      Delete
    7. Ooooh yours sounds similar to mine! Mine is a fairytale retelling with a prophecy, which combines the fairytale characters!

  4. What time zone are we going by? I'm a little confused.

    1. I was going by the time the comments read, which is the time zone I'm in anyways.

      Delete
    2. I know that in previous word wars, it really helps to just go by the minutes... You know? Everybody else is in a different time-zone, so saying something like: ":55-:35" helps clear up confusion.

      Delete
    3. I still am confused about which time zones. I'm Eastern Time. It's 1:17 now.

      Delete
    4. Okay, I'm an hour ahead of the time used on the blog. ☺

      Delete
  5. In previous word wars we listed the time like this :55-:05. So it applies to all time zones.

  6. Anyone up for another war? :40-:55, maybe?

    2. I got 397. I wasn't able to finish the last sentence in the time, but this is it completed: Leena looked up to see him crash through the remainder of the roof, glass shattering and flying all over the floor.
...... Your story sounds so cool! How was the Beauty and the Beast retelling you did for the contest?

      Delete
    3. Thank you, your story sounds really neat too! Does it have a title?

Oh, you remembered I did that! I didn't know anybody did :D. It went really well (it actually was a Sleeping Beauty story, though :)), even if it is an awful wreak at the moment it was still a really fun story to write! I'll probably work on it some more someday.

Are you up for another war?

    1. We can make it longer if you'd like. :)
      ....
That's cool you got to do it though. I might do it next year, but it has me now writing retellings...Whoops. I think I got them mixed up because the one I'm doing now is a BatB retelling. :) This one is currently called Leena. Not a very wowing title, but it works for now. Do you post your stories on a blog? 'Cause I'd love to read them.

      Delete
    2. Alright, does :45-:00 work?

Ooo, you should! They're really fun :). Yours is a BatB retelling? That's really neat, I've always wanted to try writing one of those!

I do sometimes, but my blog is private. I'm hoping to get a public one sometime soon though :). I'll let you know if I do!

      Delete
    3. I got 504 :). My last sentence was: “No sir.” The assassin lowered his gaze and nodded before darting off in the opposite direction.

    4. I got 319. Last sentence: Alone in the room, she cried herself to sleep.
