July 2017 Word War: Day Three

Today is day THREE of our word war, and I'm doing it backwards.

What do you mean, Jill?

I'm glad you asked. I am in the middle of a MAJOR rewrite. My editor would like me to cut at least 50,000 words from my 194,000-word story.

That's a lot, huh?

So instead of telling you how many words I wrote each day, I'm posting how many words I cut.

Because I have to cut a lot of words.

On Monday, I cut 2178 words from four chapters, and ended up with three chapters instead. A pretty good day.

On Tuesday, I cut 1121 from two chapters. So I will keep chip-chip-chipping away.

How are all of you doing? Share your progress in the comments below.

What's a word war?

A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time. Sometimes these are also referred to as "word sprints."

How does it work?

Write as much as you're able to today, and when you're done, leave a comment in this post about how the day went. You can share how many words you wrote, stumbling blocks, a favorite line you wrote, whatever you want!

You can also start mini word wars in the comments section of this blog, or on the Go Teen Writers Community Facebook group. (If you apply to join, leave me a comment on the blog so I can get you approved.)

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we write. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the war goes on!

How long does it last?

This word war began Monday and will end Friday night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's never too late to join, and you don't have to participate every day.

If you have time to play, this WILL help you. Join in the fun.

  1. I'm going to be going around 10:30 Central time if anyone wants to war with me. If my time changes, though, I let you know. My days are crazy, but I really want to war with someone. Just let me know and we'll do it right here. :)

    2. Okay, perfect. I was going to do it for thirty minutes and forgot to put that up there. :)

    3. :D Should be an interesting session as I've run out of ideas for new scenes to add on my WW2 story. Might have to wing it, and hope I find a plot bunny worth keeping.

      What are you working on?

    4. My second book to my dystopian trilogy. I'm on chapter Thirteen at the moment. I'm hoping to get in enough to finish the chapter and maybe start the next one. Right now its from the villain's POV.

WW2 sounds like an interesting time era to write about. Hopefully a plot bunny comes around for you. What is the plot of your book?

    5. Villains can be fun to write about... Ah, crunch time! Talk later--must write!

    6. I just finished for the thirty minute interval. Unfortunately, I seemed to be grasping today. 1,444 for the thirty minutes. Usually I do better, but not today. I'll probably add to it later. How'd you do?

    9. Lol. Thank you for sprinting with me. That was fun and definitely kept me focused. You did really well, too. :D

    10. Thanks for hosting. :o)

Did you get through the chapter like you wanted?

As for my main plot, it's about a young man and his sister trying to disentangle themselves from a saboteur's ploys. How about yours? Dystopian is always exciting.

      Happy writing!

    11. Its about the government taking too much control and rebellions rising. My main character has to figure out what to do all the while trying to have a somewhat normal life. I have a better description on my blog under Writing Adventures if you want to check it out.

      Your plot sounds awesome!

Yes, I got through the chapter and then some. The chapter I was first writing was shorter, so I made it down to chapter fifteen before time ran out.

Thanks again. Hopefully the plot bunnies find you! :)

  2. Anyone want to war from 12:30 to 12:50 (EST)?

    1. Aww man. I want to, but I have to get some chores done and I don't think I'd be back in time to war. I'm sorry, but good luck. Something I do to keep myself focused is set a timer and just go. If no one else wars with you, you can always compete with yourself.

      Sorry. God bless you! :D

    2. No problem! May He bless you also!

    3. Woo-hoo. That's great. What's your story about if you don't mind telling? (I totally understand if you don't want to talk about it.) :)

    4. It's about a pair of siblings whose other siblings go missing and are reported to be dead. The remaining siblings (twins) aren't satisfied with this, so they do some investigating and find out that their brother was involved in a secret organization trying to overthrow the self-proclaimed king, who had taken out the rightful king.

    5. Sounds awesome. What genre would you say this is?

    6. Honestly, I'm not sure. It's not fantasy, although I have considered converting it to science fantasy. It could be dystopian, but it doesn't really fit in there either.
So basically I'm finding out as I go. :)

    7. Sometimes, that's the fun in it. The fun is in the adventure, not the outcome. :)

  3. I just did a 30 minute sprint and got 1,312 words. Yay! Hopefully I can do more later :)

    2. That's still really good, Mila. Sometimes it's hard to get 1,000 in a few hours. It was just because I was really inspired today :)
