Memorial Day Sale and the Last Week for the Go Teen Writers Points Store

Jill Williamson is a chocolate loving, daydreaming, creator of kingdoms. She writes weird books for teens in lots of weird genres like, fantasy (Blood of Kings trilogy), science fiction (Replication), and dystopian (The Safe Lands trilogy). Find Jill on FacebookTwitterPinterest, or on her author website.

Stephanie and I put the Go Teen Writers ebook on a $2.99 sale for Memorial Day Weekend. The sale will run from right now until midnight on Monday and should apply in all the international Amazon stores as well.

If you weren't aware, purchase of the Go Teen Writers book earns points for the Go Teen Writers store.

Also, keep in mind that there is only one week left for before the Go Teen Writers store closes until the fall, so do all you can to get your points in by May 31st. Thanks so much to all of you for the things you've done to earn points so far. Stephanie and I are so impressed with your creativity and thankful to know you.

And since I just finished my edits and my hands are cramping up from a week of ten-hour days at the computer, I'm going to leave you all with some of my favorite writing quotes for the weekend.

"It’s a shame publishers send rejection slips. Writers should get something more substantial than a slip that amounts to a pile of confetti. Publishers should send something heavier. Editors should send out rejection bricks, so at the end of a lot of years, you would have something to show besides a wheelbarrow of rejection slips. Instead you could have enough bricks to build a house." –Jerry Spinelli

"Don’t use words too big for the subject. Don’t say 'infinitely' when you mean 'very'; otherwise you’ll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite." –C. S. Lewis

"I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." –Douglas Adams

"If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time or the tools to write." –Stephen King, On Writing

"It’s a job that’s never started that takes the longest to finish." –J. R. R. Tolkien

And my all-time fave—I know I’ve spouted this one before, but it’s so true and so important.

"Books aren’t written—they’re rewritten. Including your own.  It’s one of the hardest things to accept, especially after the seventh rewrite hasn’t quite done it." –Michael Crichton

What is one of your favorite writing quotes?

  1. OH. That one by Jerry Spinelli. I. Love. It.

This is one of my all-time favourite quotes: "You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.” - Madeleine L'Engle

  2. Here some of my favorites:

If they won’t write the kind of books we want to read, we shall have to write them ourselves; but it is very laborious.

    - C.S. Lewis to J.R.R. Tolkien

If you write for God, you will reach many men and bring them joy. If you write for men, you may make some money, and you may give someone a little joy, and you may make a noise in the world — for a little while. If you write only for yourself, you can read what you yourself have written, and after ten minutes, you will be so disgusted you will wish that you were dead.

    - Thomas Merton, New Seeds of Contemplation

  3. My favourite writing quote:

"If there is a book that you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." ~ Toni Morrison

    1. I really like that one too Hannah. :) I was going to post about it, but I saw you already had. Probably part of the reason I started writing in the first place.

    2. That's great, Hannah. Very inspiring.

  4. This isn't by a famous person, but it's one of my favorites:

“Without darkness, light cannot shine. Life has value because death exists. Suffering creates the worst villains, but it also creates the greatest heroes. And, having the Creator of the universe within us, we have the capacity to create, and create well, as much or more as any secular author.”- Jake of the Sadaar, UG member and former Sentinel

Jake, BTW, is a friend of mine from a forum we're both on.

  5. I like that Tolkien one. It's so fitting for what I'm doing right now. I lost my first draft because of accidentally deleting the document while trying to move them around on an iPad, and so I'm literally rewriting 2/3s of it.

I also like Ray Bradbury's "You must stay drunk on writing, so reality cannot destroy you."
I found this quote in some art museum, which I thought was cool.
"Being inexhaustible, life and nature are a constant stimulus for a creative mind."
    -Hans Hoffman

I haven't been doing much with the GTW store. The last month of school and homework has been taking up all of my time. Maybe next time, though.
Thanks for the post, Jill! It was inspiring.

    1. I'm sorry you lost your document, Katia! That is so discouraging.

Thanks for sharing those other quotes. Love them. :-)

  6. I collect writing quotes and someday I want to put a few on my wall in vynal lettering. Here are three of my favorites...

    1. There is only one trait that marks a writer. He is always watching. It’s a kind of trick of the mind and he is born with it. ~ Morley Callagahan

    2. Close the door. Write with no one looking over your shoulder. Don’t try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say. It’s the one and only thing you have to offer. ~Barbra Kingsolver

    3. You don’t find out you’re an artist because you do something really well. You find out you’re an artist because when you fail you have something within you—strength or belief or just craziness—that picks you back up again. ~Junot Diaz

  7. Haha, as I was reading through the quotes I couldn't help but think of Michael Crichton's "Books aren't written, they're rewritten" Then I came to your last quote and thought, bingo!

One of my favorites ic By CS Lewis (surprise surprise!)
"Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it." - CS Lewis

Of course you don't want to completely copy a different story, but I shouldn't concentrate to much energy on worrying about originality either.

Also, slight side note. We get points for the Go Teen Writer's book? I don't recall it being on the original list, but is it 50 points too?

    1. It wasn't on the original list, Rachel, but when we decided to do the sale we added it :)

    2. Oh, Alright!
Thanks! I'll take advantage of that opportunity then. :)

  8. I really ought to send you the points that I did get ... there aren't very many though.

Ah ... here is a perfect excuse to raid my "Inspiring words" pinboard!

“I think I did pretty well, considering I started out with nothing but a bunch of blank paper." - Steve Martin

"A professional writer is a amateur that didn't quit." - Richard Bach.

"When you start writing, the magic comes when the characters seem to take a life of their own and write the words themselves." - Alice Hoffman.

"You can make anything by writing." - C.S. Lewis

  10. Does purchasing the Go Teen Writers book count for points or can you just purchase the other two for points ?

    1. Yes, purchasing the Go Teen Writers book counts for points too. (Or if someone bought it back in March, that would count as well. It doesn't need to have been bought this month for it to count.)

  11. These are all so cool! This isn't technically a writing quote, but it's a really cool Harry Potter quote, and I feel like it says a lot about writing.

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
    -Albus Dumbledore (J.K. Rowling)

  14. Question:

I also have a writing blog and I love the idea of putting up inspirational writing quotes. Are they copyrighted or anything? What do I have to do?
