WORD WAR: Day Three

My total for Tuesday was 5100 words.

I started out strong and quickly got stuck when I needed my characters to take a ferry across a lake. But it was a great lake, the size of one of the US Great Lakes, so I decided to make it a barge instead. And by the time I'd learned enough to write the scene decently, I'd lost almost an hour doing research.

These things happen.

How did you do yesterday? I am ready for a BIG day today. I'm past the hard scenes. What I have to write next should be fun. Lots of dialogue. I love dialogue because it goes fast!

If you're just joining us on the word war (or if today's the first you've heard of it) here's a quick recap of what we're doing this week at Go Teen Writers:

A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.

This word war began yesterday will end on Friday night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's not too late to join us!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the weekend goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:
1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. There's strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTW or on the Go Teen Writers Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member yet, apply to join and then shoot me an email telling me so that I can get you approved pronto.)

Looking forward to a long day of writing with you!

  1. I got about 1,800 words yesterday! I started a new story yesterday and got up to 1,144. I think that's the most I've written for the beginning at the story at one time. I hope I'll get at least 2k today!

  2. I got 731 words yesterday. Which isn't too much, but at least something ;-) I'm afraid I don't have a lot of time to write today, but we'll see if I get some words on the paper.

  5. I didn't make it to the 5k I wanted yesterday, and I know I won't get much done today because I have a orthodontist appointment the afternoon, and my aunt's coming, and we're having dinner with my Pa, but I hope to make two or three thousand words!!
Yesterday's total was (the exact total): 3,864
Want to get Slaved to 10k today! Almost there!! =)

Is anyone available for a WORD WAR =)

  6. Hey, so I completely forgot that a new post was already up and was waiting for comments on last one's. :)
Anyone for a fifteen minute word war?
Jill or Stephanie, can I please make a suggestion? It would be SO much easier if you guys made two posts each day. The posts are overflowing with comments and you have to load them to get to the last ones each time... Sorry if I sound rude!

    7. Great job! No prob, Petra. I'm sure most of us do it once or twice (or more... :))

    8. Sofia, yes, all these comments are overwhelming, but they'd still get that way with two posts a day. You could try using the Twitter hashtag or posting on the Facebook group or even emailing each other privately in a group. Or maybe a Google + discussion (I know nothing about Google +, though...)

    12. Sofia, my scene was a miniature battle between a semi-villain, and three of my MC's :) what was yours about?

    13. Great job, Petra and TW! Sophia, my scene was a dialogue in which a character who is about to sacrifice herself so the rest of the characters can live is arguing with her best friend.

    2. Thanks, Patience! :-) You're making impressive progress, too. How do you like editing? I always thought I would hate it, but when I actually came to doing it for a story I liked, I enjoyed it quite a bit for the first seven rounds or so.

      Delete
    3. Aw, thank you, Caiti! :) Well, editing's not my favorite thing in the world. ;) But I have learned a lot through it! Oh, that's great! And you know, it must be a great feeling once the book is TOTALLY done and ready for publication. :)

      Delete
    4. No, it's not my favorite, either, but there are some days I just want something solid to work with, you know? I'm glad that you've learned a lot! And congratulations on pushing through it, even though you don't like it. Actually, I've never gotten to the editing stage on a novel; only on short stories, which I'm typically editing a hundred times to get them below a certain word count. THAT'S always fun! (Not!) But I'm sure it is a great feeling, once editing fatigue wears off. ;-)

      Delete
    5. Ah, I understand. :) Thank you very much, Caiti! That means a lot. :D *sympathetic smile* Ah yes - I've heard a lot about how difficult it is keeping short stories down to a certain word-count. And I like lots of description - a little too much, I'm afraid ;) - so I also have to weed my word-count down too in my novels. :) Yes, that editing fatigue!

This has really pushed me to make progress with it. :) Today I'm embarking on edits for Chapter 7, and I'm hoping to be up through Chapter 10 before the Word War ends.

    1. That's great Patience! I am at a very similar place, I just finished writing the first draft of Chapter 7 too! :) Yes, brownie points for all you late night word warriors! :) I have really really loved how supportive everyone is through this word war... writers are often a solitary bunch, and it has been cool to be part of such an encouraging online community! It has given me motivation to write! Thanks everyone!

    2. Thank you, Ashley! Wow, we are pretty close then. :) That's great! Oh, and I echo all of this, guys - you all have been so supportive, and it's been awesome. :D Thank you, everybody!!

I'm off to edit now. :) That is, if the Word Wars aren't too tempting . . . ;D

    3. I agree with both of you. Word wars are very motivating! I actually don't know what chapter I'm on. Technically, I'm on Chapter 6, but I forgot to keep adding chapter breaks in long ago, so I now have a very long Chapter 6. It's about 40k long. Oops!
