My bags are packed, and I'm catching a flight to Baltimore this morning for a writing retreat with Roseanna White!
With baby #3 arriving in October, this is my last solo trip for quite a while, so I'm a bit giddy and also determined to write a LOT of words while I still can.
I hope you'll be able to join us these next few days! Here's how the word war works:
What it is: A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.
This word war began yesterday and will end Monday night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's never too late to join!
The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the war goes on!
Here's how you can connect with each other:
1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. Or you can challenge each other to word wars. There is strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.
2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar, or on the Go Teen Writers Community Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member, you can apply to join by clicking here.)
I'm hoping to hit 5,000 words today; how about you?
Same here! I've found 5k to be a pretty good number when I have the day off from work. I didn't quite make it yesterday, only got 4,300-something.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great retreat, Mrs. Morrill!
Thank you! Good luck today!
DeleteBy the way, is anyone up for a word war?
ReplyDeleteYou still around? I've got all day :p
DeleteYep, still here!
DeleteShall we say :50-:00?
Sure!
DeleteI only got 171 words. Last sentence: “No,” broke in the former Berserker, “*The* Demigod.”
Delete404 words-- I think. I'm so engrossed in my story, I forgot where I started.
DeleteLast sentence: Atarah quickly dropped her hands from his side and shoulder.
:10-:20? That'll give me time to go do something real quick.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Deleteha, we posted at the same time. Sure.
DeleteLast sentences: Dorlin stayed silent, drowned in thought. But even angry waters do no good to flame, and Borifas yelped as Gren'eldorf sent a fireball flying at the former assassin's face.
DeleteSorry, I went a bit over. I really gotta step up my game. 186 words here :(. Writer's block is my mortal foe. How'd you do?
379 words gor me!
DeleteLast sentence: The lack of women in the camp rendered Atarah and the princess indispensable dancing partners.
Up for another one?
Sorry if I disappear or take a while answering. Let's just say Bolivian internet stinks, and mine especially. I'm doing my best.
Oops. *for me*
DeleteWell, your internet is matched by my scarily unpredictable laptop. Seriously.
DeleteHow about :10 to :25? I need a bit of a break, and a longer run. You up for it?
PS- Your story sounds cool! What's it about?
DeleteThat timing sounds great!
DeleteMy story is- well, I haven't found the exact genre for it yet.
A mere minstrel lass, (and tomboy, I might add), Atarah feels completely unprepared when she is called upon to pass undercover in the palace. Her mission: save the life of the emperor, who would kill her to find out what she knows. Will her loyalty stand the test, or will she find herself in more trouble than ever?
That's my basic summary for the moment. What about yours?
Sounds cool!
DeleteThat's cool! My tale is based on Norse Mythology.
DeleteWhen a royal assassin, Dorlin Hull, discovers that his master, the Emperor, is the fabled Demigod searching for a Key to a terrible weapon, he is arrested for his knowledge. The Key is scattered in time, and when he flees with ally Borifas to the Forest, a series of events lead him to be sucked into the past where he unites with his mortal enemy, Servus, to stop the Demigod before he collects the last piece of the Key. But before he can save all of time, he must face Death itself, and face her without fear.
That's pretty much the entire story, from start to finish-ish. Norse myths and time travel. I know, a bit unorthodox. It the first book I've taken upon myself to finish, after all. :)
Sounds cool!
DeleteHey, that sounds pretty awesome!
DeleteIt seems we have emperors, forests, and general "unorthodoxy" in common!
Alright, ready for round, what, 3 now!
Go!
DeleteThanks guys! I got 342, with a last sentence of:
DeleteIf we kill the Demigod now, we may change the future,” he said quietly. “This is the reason nobody messes with these ancient magics: they are witchery.”
I got 193 words. my last sentence: "Here i am disowned and expelled."
DeleteMy brother Josh is doing it with me. He got 156 words. His last sentence: “BLAAUUURGGHH!!!” Elijah cried out, and fell down into his sweaty mess.
Nice one Jonathan!
DeleteWoah, 711 words this time. I think I can stop to breathe now.
DeleteLast sentence: Only a few remained to say goodbye.
Gotta go, guys. I'll be back soon.
DeleteOhh chilling last sentence. Man you guys wrote a lot of words!
DeleteThose are some pretty awesome last sentences!
DeleteWhat do you say we do another one from :40-:55?
Sorry i have got to go do dishes:( Keep on writing guys!!!
DeleteOkeydokey! See y'all soon!
DeleteI didn't get to write much yesterday, but I hope to write a *lot* today! Good luck, everyone!
ReplyDeleteHave fun on your retreat!
ReplyDeleteMy total so far is 1262 words. Not a lot, I know. But it's better than it could be, and I'm hoping to write a fair bit today.
Thank you!
DeleteFinished 660 words in the last half hour, looking forward to writing more today :). ~Savannah
ReplyDelete769 words so far-strangely, exactly same as yesterday's total word count. Oh writer's block, I think I could write you a poem. A bad, bad poem.
ReplyDeleteWriter's block is absolutely terrible. ~Savannah
DeleteAmen.
Delete1,660 words so far today!
ReplyDeleteThat puts me at over 6,000 wordd since starting this war. We should do this more often!
Whoa, 6,000 total so far? That's seriously awesome! And I agree, we should do this more often :). ~Savannah
DeleteWow!
Delete1,042 more words written in the last half hour. I'm excited to see if I can beat yesterday's total word count today :). ~Savannah
ReplyDeleteHave fun Mrs Morrill!
ReplyDeleteAnyone up for a war?
We'll be doing another one at :10-:25 up a few comments if you'd like to join!
DeleteSure! Thanks:)
DeleteThanks, Megan!
DeleteI'm not ready just yet, but I'm up for a word war at :00 (11 eastern time). Anyone else want to join.
ReplyDelete~K.A.C.
I'm up for it! :00-:15 sound good?
DeleteSure!
Delete~K.A.C.
Ooh, I'll join in if that's alright!
DeleteUgh. My Internet decided to be screwy, so I'll just join in on the next one.
DeleteI don't know if I was just warring against myself, but anyway...
DeleteI got 653 words, with the last sentence(s) of: "And what of you, Lady Atarah of Lamis? What brings you to these parts?"
447 words, last sentence (i actualy forget how it went but probably something like this.): she knew that she had strung truth into it, but she underestimated how much.
DeleteHow'd everybody else do?
~K.A.C.
Are you guys doing another? If so could i join in?
DeleteI'll join in if you do another. :)
DeleteWhy not? We can do :35-:50
Delete~K.A.C.

DeleteJust 520 for me this time... I am going to just sto now.
DeleteLast sentence: "I would like that very much, thank you."
I'm going to take a break, eat lunch, and see if this internet will stop its temper tantrum.
See y'all later.
139 words. Last sentence: It opens with ease and suddenly im falling
Delete301 words for me. I don't think my groove has woken up yet, haha. :P Last (unfinished) sentence: It must have been close to midnight when they rode into Farland,
Delete517 words. Last sentence: she had places to be and plans to execute.
Delete~K.A.C.
Great job!
DeleteI'm going to take a break. I'll try to join in a bit later. Good job to everybody who was warring.
Delete~K.A.C.
Sorry. :-(
ReplyDeleteScrewy internet.
:40-:55 it is.
Another 660 words finished (LOL, same as earlier this morning). So ... 2,362 words written before noon and 6,468 since the war started :). ~Savannah
ReplyDeleteAnyone have a favorite sentence they've written today? Mine would have to be: "Yes, her name is Asteria, and she will be quite put out if we keep from introducing you for too long." ~Savannah
ReplyDeleteAnyone up for a word war?
ReplyDeleteDon't know how long I'll be able to stay (probably not long), but I'm up for one :). ~Savannah
DeleteCool! :30 to :40?
DeleteThat's good with me. ~Savannah
DeleteI can try, as long as this internet will let mr!
DeleteWhat time?
Started halfway through, but my word count's a little pathetic - I've only got 60 words in five minutes. Last (full) sentence: Seriously? I know the boys get a harder time of it than I do, but don't I deserve a little harassment?
DeleteOkay, got 340 words in, with the last sentence being: “It was quiet for a moment, before Avalon spoke up, “Do you think Twyla would want to know about this?”“ ~Savannah
Delete267 words for me, but I went a bit over. Last sentence: Instead of going back to his old, sinister, lean human body, he'd gone here halfway, and now the thing that stood was half Nair, half human—with fangs and fur, but with a human body and flesh jutting off of some places.
DeleteHey, cool names, Savannah! And that's a chilling sentence, Lara.
DeleteWell, I have to go, but I'll be back to war some more later today :). ~Savannah
DeleteBye, Anna! I'll take a quick break too, just to clear my head. I'll be back in like fifteen minutes :)
DeleteIt's media harassment, so not as chilling as you might have thought! I need to re-write a couple of paragraphs, but I'd love to war when you're back.
DeleteBy the way, it's Savannah =). Anna is my mom's name, and I'm using her account. Anyone want to war again? ~Savannah
DeleteSavannah, are you still there? I'd love to war!
DeleteAnyone up for war? *sharpens battle keyboard*.
ReplyDeleteWe're gonna have one up there, Lara ^^^. Come join!
DeleteOh, word wars are such fun!! I'm outlining my novel for NaNo, so won't be participating this time around. But I wish you all the very best with your novels and for Camp NaNo! :D I'll enjoy watching the wars though. :) You guys are doing great!
ReplyDeleteAnyone up for a word war?
ReplyDeleteI'm up for one :). ~Savannah
Delete0:15 to 0:25? (sorry my internet broke down for a few minutes)
DeleteSounds good to me! ~Savannah
DeleteFinished with 441 words :). My last sentence was: “The portal is open, and I can’t figure out why.” ~Savannah
Delete430 words. My last sentence was "And before you do anything, know that I can call Kale back up here in seconds."
Delete8,142 words since yesterday.
ReplyDeleteThat's approximately 8,142 words I would not have written if not for this war!
whoa! That's a LOT! How much do you have total on your current WIP?
DeleteAnybody still up for a word war?
ReplyDeleteI'm only missing 1,821 words to break 10k in two days, but I'm downright unmotivated right now.
Anybody?
*raises arm* I will! I'm editing, so if you'll give me a few minutes to get google docs open...
Deleteokay, 0:20 to 0:30?
DeleteI got 397 words edited. Last sentence(s): Meryl squeezed her eyes shut, she saw the man with the scar in front of her face, taunting her, “I do not know,” she replied honestly with a sigh. She looked up to see Arianas face droop sadly, “If this God is so great, why would He not protect His people, as does a king?”
Delete“God is the King of Kings, and he does protect his followers. They may have to endure a little pain in this world, but this life will be nothing compared to Eternal Life with Him. He cares for all.”
lol. Deep sentences. ;)
466 words written.
DeleteLast sentence: "'Twas m'lady Farah's," she answered, her voice muffled by the gowns about her.
Answering your question above, about 12,000. I'm just getting started.
Another from :40-:50?
Mind if I join?
DeleteHow 'bout from :42-:52? (my friend is joining and will be right here.)
Delete539 words edited. Last sentence: Ariana shut her eyes and reached up, pulling herself up. They turned the corner and opened the door of the tower. After running in, Ariana pulled out the silver key and slammed the door shut. She thrust the key into the lock, locking themselves in and locking others-out.
Delete272 words, though I can't be exact. Last sentence(s): “What, you want the weapon of the Tyr?” At this Servus laughed. “Don't be silly. I want revenge! I'm Death's servant; I have all the power I could get. The Emperor used to be terrible to me.”
DeleteCool sentence, Sarah.
DeleteHi guys! I'm the friend Sarah mentioned, for what ever the reason commenting didn't work but I'm here now:)
DeleteThanks! @DeVallgirls did you finish? :)
DeleteWho wants another war? ~Savannah
DeleteFrom :04-:14?
DeleteMe! And I hit 35k words. Am I too excited about this? Yes.
DeleteSounds good to me Sarah :). ~Savannah
DeleteGo!
DeleteCan I join?
DeleteWe'd be glad to have you, Samantha!
Delete305 words for me. I would have answered sooner, but my internet is screwier than screwy.
DeleteI'm running around like some crazy person, trying to get cellphone signal and, in turn, internet access.
So, if I disappear again, that's why.
I'll just jump in on the next war...
433 words edited. Last sentence: “I’m fine!” Meryl tried to convince herself as much as Ariana, her feet dangled in midair as she felt nothing solid beneath her feet. She swung her feet until she got them unsteadily onto the ledge, “seems to me I’ve had an experience with this before,” Meryl mumbled to herself, remembering the snapping vine-quite clearly. Reaching for a vine, she let go of the roof.
DeleteWrote 279 words, and my last sentence was: She was dressed in sleek black, and a sword hung at her side. Her dark eyes stared at Roxanne as she replied, “Earlier.” ~Savannah
Delete186 words. Last sentence: And then, tucked away cozily in a large bush behind them, a young wizard-to-be almost fainted himself to death.
DeleteIn fifteen minutes I've written almost 300 words. Yay!
DeleteNeat sentence, Jonathan :). ~Savannah
DeleteThanks :p. I'll be back in like fifteen minutes. Really. Hopefully. Totally.
DeleteGreat job guys!
Delete105 words last sentence(s): he pressed his hand into mine "you lose something?" His arm feel down lifeless, leaving the gold on locket in my hand. Layla and I cried over his body until the police came.

DeleteWhat time?
Delete~K.A.C.

DeleteWelcome, Savannah! Great job! The Whisper queen sounds so cool. I wrote 634 words. My last sentence was: I feel a little stubble scratch my chin and I run my hands through his hair, letting him kiss my worries away. Lol, I don't usually write kissing scenes :)
DeleteDoes anyone want to do another?
DeleteOops! I meant to write what I said down below up here. I'll post it again.
DeleteI wrote 270 words.
My favourite sentences: "He gave a half smile that was extremely cute. Celeste swore she heard some girl sigh. How unprofessional. "
Last sentences: "Her voice was high but smooth, and her eyes were such a brilliant blue, much like Celeste’s."

Alright, I wrote 258 words, and my last sentence was: "Yes, I can. Hold it still for a moment,” Avalon paused for a minute as she read. When she spoke again, it was to say, “Roxanne I think it’s a map.”" ~Savannah
DeleteI wrote 362 words. My last sentence was: "But I have been thinking about this for awhile now.” How did you guys do?
DeleteGreat job, Savannah! When I read, "'Roxanne I think it's a map.'" I thought it said "I think it's a nap" and I was really confused for a bit :D
DeleteLOL, it would be strange if that is what I had actually written :D. ~Savannah
DeleteI've got to go, but I'll probably be back later this evening. Good luck to those who are still warring! ~Savannah
Delete308 words. My last sentence: "tell me, Raven. Are you running away, or running to?" I'll spend time making that a bit more smooth and flowy (i can't really describe what i'm thinking).

DeleteCool!
Delete~K.A.C.
Actually, change of plans in the form of mother yelling at me to come eat. But do it yourself and post what you got - after dinner I'll come and check it and congratulate you on how you did :)
DeleteI got 451 words. My last sentences were "you go comb your hair and put on your jewels, but when the time comes, I will rise off into the sunset. Not you!"
