I'm holed up in a cabin in Maryland with my writing bud, Roseanna White, hoping to make good dent in the first draft of my historical YA book. Yesterday was an incredibly productive for both of us. I landed at 11,500 words and Roseanna hit 13,000. Both of us were feeling pretty wiped out by the end of the day.
Here are a few shots from our word marathon yesterday:
The start of the day. I have my scenes on post-it notes, so I started just carrying around one at a time so I would stop panicking about future scenes and just focus. |
These are, like, the most uncomfortable chairs to try and write in. We're doing our best with pillows, but we still wind up on the couch or the bed half the time. |
Or when it's cloudy enough outside to see our computer screens, we go out there. |
We also have a bench. |
Hope you're able to join us today!
What it is: A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.
This word war began Wednesday and will end Monday night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's never too late to join!
The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the war goes on!
Here's how you can connect with each other:
1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. Or you can challenge each other to word wars. There is strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.
2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar, or on the Go Teen Writers Community Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member, you can apply to join by clicking here. To get in, you'll need to email goteenwriterscommunity(at)gmail.com)
Happy writing!
11,000 words un one day! Wow your fingers must have been on fire.
ReplyDeleteI got 3,000 words yesterday, putting me at 12,000 or so words since Wednesday.
Good luck, everyone, and see you after noon!
Those kind of word counts only happen for me when I'm away on a retreat! I think 12k since Wednesday is excellent :)
DeleteI got roughly a thousand words yesterday, putting me at roughly 4k since the war started. I'll try to write a bit more today :).
ReplyDeleteNice, Jonathan!
DeleteI can't believe you two got that many words in one day! Yesterday was one of my less productive days ... I would have liked to hit 6k words, but I only got 2578. Oh well, I had a good excuse (books just arrived that I wanted to read). Hoping to hit 5k today :). ~Savannah
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
DeleteThat only happens for me on writing retreats, Savannah. Otherwise I would consider 2,578 an excellent day :) Good luck today!
DeleteAnyone up for a war?? :)
ReplyDeleteI'm ready to war. The comments are so bare, its creepy! For now, I'm going to start and go from :40 to :00. Hopefully someone will join me.
Delete~K.A.C.
I'll join, but I won't be able to go the full time :). ~Savannah
DeleteAhh! My plans changed, so I can't war this morning. :( But hopefully this afternoon!! :) :)
DeleteFinished with 358 words, and my last sentence was: And as soon as the massive cave came into full sight, the elf, girl, and wolf darted inside. ~Savannah
Delete639 words. Last sentence: "its you! Its really you! You are my bride, the one we've been looking for!
DeleteI'm willing to go again, probably :10 to :20. I need to write at least 1500 words today and finish my third act (after that, only 15000 more words to go:D
~K.A.C.
Well, I had fun warring with you, but I've got to go now :). Good luck meeting your word goal! ~Savannah
DeleteI got 314 words. Last sentence: "its only a coincidence hat your foot fits the shoe and eventually, someone is going to see through your lucky disquise"
Delete@Savannah: thanks!
~K.A.C.
Still around, Anonymous?
DeleteYeah. You wanna war?
Delete~K.A.C.
Sorry, I wasn't paying attention. Sure, I'd love to war! From :00 to :10?
DeleteI got 271 words. Last sentence: why couldn't she take the time to change her bandage? I'd love to go again if you're up to it.
Delete~K.A.C.
I'm not entirely sure how many words I got, but certainly not many; I got distracted by re-writing the part I was writing. Oops. :P
DeleteThat's ok. We can war again from :30 to :40 if you want.
Delete~K.A.C.
Hang on, I've gotta sort some things out. I'll be back soon.
DeleteWord war anyone?
ReplyDeleteI'm up for war! :)
DeleteGreat! How about :26-:36?
DeleteCan we go to 46? :)
DeleteSure thing! Just saw this, lets get to it!
DeleteOk, I got 1446, with my last sentence being: "What if they hurt Meg before we can get there?”
DeleteHow about you?
Way to go!! :) I got 227 and my last sentence was: "Cinthia was PERSPIRING again."
DeleteDo you want to go another twenty or thirty minutes?
I have to go for now, but I will be on tonight!
DeleteOkay. :( Good job!!
DeleteAnyone else up for a war?
Anastasis, if you are still here, I'm available!
DeleteDon't know how much longer I'll be available, but I'll war :). ~Savannah
DeleteOkay, I now have to go for a bit, so how about :35-:45?
DeleteHmm ... I might not be free then, does :30 - :40 work? ~Savannah
Deletesounds good to me!
DeleteI think I'll jump in!! :) :)
DeleteHi, Anastasis :). I've got to go, so I ended mine a bit early. I got 235 words, and my last sentence was: Roxanne’s face lit up with excitement, “Oh my magic, what just happened?” ~Savannah
DeleteI wrote 380 words. My last sentence was: At the time I didn’t know she was telling me that it would hurt me.
DeleteHi Anastasis! Great job, Savannah! I hope to war with you again soon.
DeleteGreat job, Savannah and Laurel! I did 250 words and my last sentence was, "She opened her eyes to see a dove pecking the ground a few feet away from her."
DeleteWant to keep going, Laurel? How about till 4?
Great job! that sounds good to me
DeleteI had to leave early. I wrote 433 words. My last sentence is: "Just like Martin Luther King Junior does.”
DeleteAwesome! (That you wrote 433 words, not that you're leaving.) I got 184. :) Lot of distractions. ;) Last sentence was, "As cool water rushed down her throat, she found enough energy to grasp the jug and drain it. "
DeleteAnybody willing to war? I was at a conference for the past three days so I'm about 3000 words behind on my NaNo project. Yikes! Warring would really help. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to war with you! You want to go to 4:30?
DeleteI would actually prefer to do shorter goals.:) I have a sort of short attention span. Maybe until 3:30?
DeleteYou know what, I just realized the time difference. 4:30 is fine. :) It's 3:11 here.
DeleteHahaha! I think we're in different time zones!! :P I meant from :00 to :30, whatever hour you're in. :) :) :)
DeleteI wrote 247 words. I got a little sidetracked and stared off into space, thinking ahead for a good two minutes. And I didn't start officially until :11. :) My last sentence was, "I'm tired of doing nothing," What about you?
DeleteI got 444 words this time. My last sentence was "I know he must be hunting me now, for the whole of Nycea is in chaos about this war.”
DeleteYou want to go for another thirty minutes? :)
Sure. I need to get my little brother up from his nap, real quick and then I can start. Good luck!
DeleteJust curious, what's your book about? You don't have to say if you don't want to and you can wait until this round is over if you want. :)
No problem! :) I had to take a little break too. ;)
DeleteIt's fine! In a nutshell, it's a loose Cinderella retelling with twins. :) I wrote it as a novella for a contest. Now I'm rewriting it as a novel and it's so different...not sure how Cinderella-y it's going to be by the end! ;)
What about yours?
I wrote 231 words and the last sentence was, "I'm worse."
DeleteMy book, I actually wrote for a contest too. :) It also has a loose fairy tale aspect. It's basically about a girl named Annabelle who was formerly abused and she thinks that she is worthless. She puts herself into fairy tales she writes to get herself through her situation. She ends up getting Lyme disease. It's been fun to write. :)
I love fairy tale retellings. I'd love to read it sometime when it's published. ;)
Got 401 words. Last sentence was, "Then, the black was final."
DeleteNice! Good job.
DeleteYour book sounds fascinating! As draining and time consuming my novel is, I love writing it, too. :) And I just reached the 67,000 word mark!! :)
DeleteDo you want to keep going?
Sure, but maybe more like 15 minute goals, since now I'm sort of baby sitting and I need to pay attention to my siblings.
DeleteMaybe from :25 to :40?
DeleteI just started my book, so I've got a little less than 5000 words.
Sure! That works! :)
DeleteThis is my second summer on the novel version! The summer before was the novella. I wish it could have been done by now...but I can only write during the summer and Christmas vacation because of school. :(
I'm homeschooled, and I get up around 500 during the school year to get 2-ish hours in. Otherwise, I wouldn't get a lot done. :) I just finished a novel and just started the one I'm working on now.
DeleteI'm homeschooled, too, but I take duel credit classes at a community college. Classes like calculus and chemistry. :P So...yeah. ;) But before I started, I had tons of time and I wrote TONS of "novels!" (More like novellas, actually...) :)
DeleteI wrote 239 words and the last full sentence was, 'I’m going to conduct a physical examination and if that lines up with my guess, I’ll take a blood sample to confirm it.'
DeleteHow did you do? I think I work better under short time periods, because I wrote as much this war as I did in the last two, which both were a half hour.
I'm doing duel enrollment this next year, too! This is my first year doing it, though.
DeleteHi. I kinda joined in. Wrote 408 words. Last sentence: Her thoughts quickly overwhelmed her mind and Raven quickly found herself on the dirt path, trying to push the endless suply of emotion through the few tears she had.
DeleteHow'd everyone else do?
~K.A.C.
Good job!! :) :)
DeleteLots of distractions this time around! :) Only got 193 words this time. :( Last phrase: "Mother! You know she is my dearest friend! How could you forbid me from seeing her?” He pleaded.
Gotta go! Thanks for warring with me!! :)
Bye. I had fun too. I wrote nearly 1000 words which made a good dent on my word goal.
DeleteK.A.C. Are you still on?
DeleteOh, and welcome. :)
DeleteSo, I didn't get much writing done today...a measly 200 words. I'm in a bit of a rut, see, and I figured a day's break would do me good. It's time to go to bed where I live. Good writing, everyone :)
ReplyDeleteGood work! That's more than I've done the past 3 days. :)
DeleteGood job! I've gone MONTHS without writing that much!! :) :)
DeleteHey, thanks! And here I was sitting thinking I was the only one.
DeleteStephanie, you're writing another historical fiction novel? AHHH! Oh, that is so exciting!
ReplyDeleteAna, you wouldn't be interested in word warring, would you?
DeleteAnyone interested in a word war?
ReplyDeleteI'm in!
Delete~K.A.C.
Hi! Do you want to war from :55 to :05?
DeleteWhat's your book about?
Sure (all explain afterward since were about to start.)
Delete~K.A.C.
I wrote 109 words. I'm a really slow writer. :) The last sentence was, '"I’m prescribing an antibiotic that will fight it.”'
Delete288 words. Last sentence: "tell me what happened." My book is basicly a retelling of the brothers grimm version of Cinderella, except from the step sister's point of view. It's cool because i'm trying to include as many details from the actual story as possible. So the MC will cut off her toe and have her eyes pecked out (rubbs hands together maliciously)
ReplyDeleteHoww about you?
~K.A.C.
That sounds interesting. I'd love to read it when it gets published! I've got to go. I promised to play a game with my siblings. Good luck on your story!
DeleteThanks!
DeleteHi, I'm back. I don't know if you're still on. I totally missed the bottom part where you asked about mine. :) Whoops.
DeleteIf you're still on, it's about a girl named Annabelle who was formerly abused and thinks she's worthless. She writes fairy tales and puts herself into them to process her life. She ends up getting Lyme disease and meeting someone whom she fantasizes, may be her prince.
Word war anyone?
ReplyDeleteif you are still here, I would love to! how about :15-:30?
DeleteSure thing!
DeleteI got 885.... Last sentence: “Even though he has put you through all of this?” Dakota countered.
DeleteI wrote 677 words! My last sentence is: I click on one that looks somewhat reputable and start reading.
DeleteGreat job!
DeleteCan I join in on the next one? :-)
DeleteSure! How does :35-:45 sound?
DeleteIf you guys are doing another, can I jump in? I have literally written nothing today and that stats page seems to be glaring at me . . .
DeleteSounds great. :-)
DeleteHop on in!
DeleteI have to leave, but good luck warring!
DeleteSounds good to me!
DeleteOoh... I have to do something. :-/ I'll join in on the next one.
DeleteOr maybe I won't. :-/ Dinner is ready. Thanks anyway!
DeleteI got 589... last sentence: “Give him chance, come on Dakota, please. He needs hope and he needs someone to love him.”
DeleteOk I got to go, thanks for waring with me!
Great job! I only managed 202, last sentence: “Don’t think I didn’t hear that.” She took off jogging as we reached the edge of the woods, and I had to sprint to catch up.
DeleteThanks for the war!
Hey! Is anyone on for word wars? I'm far behind on my word count.
ReplyDeleteAnyone up for a word war? I'm around for the next hour or so.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you're still here, but i'll word war with you.
Delete~K.A.C.
If you're still around, I can do any time for the next thirty or forty minutes.
DeleteI'm here! :25 to :35?
ReplyDeleteWrote 294 words. Wanna go again?
Delete~K.A.C.
I only managed 145, what with the writer's block. We can definitely do another--how's :45 to :55?
DeleteI wrote 268 words. Last sentence; Raven started to laugh and, as the seconds went by, she found that Will joined in too. I have to go, but it was nice warring with you. Good luck on your WIP.
Delete~K.A.C.
I got 313 this time, ending with: I tried not to think about the fact that ‘nothing’ could also mean no air, no light . . . truly nothing.
DeleteThanks for warring with me!
Did over a 1000 today. :)
