July Word War: Day 5

Stephanie here.

Yesterday, we woke up to a foggy morning in the mountains of western Maryland. What writer doesn't feel inspired by a foggy morning?

While I struggled through some funky plot issues and pregnancy-induced fatigue, Roseanna galloped her way to over 13,000 words by the end of day. (She might phrase this differently, but that's what it seemed like to me as I kept staring at my scene thinking, "Okay ... so ... now what?")

I still finished the day with 10,000 words and a plot twist that I really liked, but I did more of an army crawl to the 10k mark as opposed to a sprint.

Both of us are getting pretty close to typing "The end" over here, which is always exciting. And it's fun knowing that so many of you are writing together as well.

It's not too late to join in! If you haven't been around for one of our word wars, here's how it works:

What it is: A word war is when you and another writer (or in this case, lots of other writers!) compete to see who can write the most words in a designated period of time.

This word war began Wednesday and will end tomorrow night. It's a come-and-go, write-when-you-can style of war, so it's never too late to join!

The goal is to buckle down and focus on our manuscripts whenever we can, make good use of our writing time, and encourage each other as we do. Hopefully you'll be meeting new writers and deepening friendships as the war goes on!

Here's how you can connect with each other:

1. In the comments section of the blog. Something as simple as "Just wrote 1,000 words in the last hour!" is fine. Or you can challenge each other to word wars. There is strength in being able to encourage each other and in knowing that others are hard at work too.

2. On Twitter, using the hashtag #GTWwordwar, or on the Go Teen Writers Community Facebook Group. (This is a closed group, so if you're not a member, you can apply to join by clicking here.
To get in, you'll need to email goteenwriterscommunity(at)gmail.com)

Happy writing!

    1. Yeah, I'm here. Can probably war for the next forty minutes or so if you'd like to do a couple.

    2. 344 words. Last sentence: The stone corridor stretched out forever, opened into various rooms along the way, but unlike the sinister Castle in Imperia it was well lit with torches, and adorned with tapestries of the elvish flag, and paintings of elvish figures.

    3. I got 170 (plot issues . . .) ending with: The two of us stood there, frozen, for a second.

      Delete
    4. Cool! Yeah, I feel for you. Plot issues...

Wanna go again? :45 to :00?

    5. Slowest. Commenting. Process. Ever.

But yeah, that sounds great! I might have to leave after this one but that should work.

    6. 258 words, roughly. Last sentence(s): Gren'eldorf darted up the hallway, and into the second room. Dorlin, unsure, followed him.

    7. I got 445. Last sentence: "You need to learn to trust, April, and I know it’s hard for you after everything, but it’s the only way you’re going to be able to keep going.”

I have to go now, but thanks for the wars!

  2. Nice job, Mrs. Morrill and Mrs. White! Those are some pretty amazing wordcounts!

I managed to finish just over 15,000 words since Wednesday! I also got 716 emails in my inbox from following the posts. :-) An hour later and they still haven't downloaded.

    1. Hey, great job! I only have like 4000 words so far.

      Delete
    2. And that 4000 words wasn't cause I don't have time. It's cause I have *no* idea where this story is going.

      Delete
    3. Wow! Wish I could've gotten that many, I'd be done with Camp NaNo already...I have around 4000 words written since Wednesday, and two thirds of that was absolute nonsense.

      Delete
  3. I finished with a total of 3,199 yesterday, which means I've written 15,394 words since the war started :). ~Savannah

    2. Yeah, I'm here. What times work for you?

      Delete
    3. Still available for wars, if anyone's interested in doing one.

      Delete
    4. oh sorry... how about 10:20 to 10:40 if you read this in time?

      Delete
    5. So... I've got 571... might need to improve my quick writing I guess... How about you?

      Delete
    6. I got 429, ending with: “Stupid enough to fall into a pit and break your leg.” He started to roll up my pants leg, and I gasped at the sudden surge of pain.

      How'd you guys do?

      Delete
    7. I'm having major wifi issues... I wrote 460 words and my last sentence wasn't finished: I get ready for bed and go to sleep hoping, just hoping, that I wake up tomorrow with all of my mem[ories.]

      Delete
    8. Nice job, Fraise and Ellie!

      Delete
    9. Nice job you! How about you, Laurel? Also, can you guys help me? I'm writing a scene in which my MC learns his grandfather he has just lost was actually killed and I'm struggling a bit with his reaction...

      Delete
    10. Well done, Laurel! (And as for the wi-fi . . . you would not believe the number of problems I have with mine . . .)

Want to go again? I can probably do one more, but after that I might head outside. I need a break.

      Delete
    11. Fraise, I would do something with shock. I use numbness and shock a lot - probably too much - but something where he doesn't feel anything and maybe describe his movements and less emotion? I don't really know because most of my characters try to hide their emotions so this works well with them but depending on your character it may not...
and Ellie, I totally need a break. So although this was a lot of fun, I have to go now. I hope to war with you soon!

      Delete
    12. See what I'm complaining about with the stupid slow comment process??!!!

Hmm . . . for that situation I guess I would kind of go for a "no, that's not possible" kind of reaction, and maybe have your MC feel numb for a while . . . and then it's going to depend on the character's personality. Angry characters usually seek revenge after something like that, but if you have a timid MC that won't be the case, and a curious character would be more interested in figuring out what exactly happened, and why.

      Delete
    13. Thanks Laurel, I think it might actually work, I'll just try it out and play around with it a bit ;)

      Delete
    14. OK, sounds good.

Bye, Laurel! Thanks for the war!

      Delete
    15. Got 265. Last sentense:
"Alvaro, where did you get that letter from?" the master asked, his voice still being as calm as usual.

      Delete
    16. I got 355, ending with: “We aren’t leaving you.” He trimmed the dangling strips of denim into a ragged edge. “Nice try.”

I'm going to take a break now to get outside for a while and have lunch, but I'll probably be warring again this evening. Thanks for the wars!

    11. I only wrote 284 words this time. I know that's not bad in any way, but it's just annoying me since last time I wrote a little more than double that. This was just a hard scene to write. My last sentences were: My hand reaches around inside the pillowcase and lands on a pad of paper. Huh?

    13. Do you guys want to do another? maybe until :15-:30?

    14. Why not? My word count needs to grow. I am doing nanowrimo and I have got to finish before the 24th because I am leaving for a trip. So extra words are always good. :-)

    24. Aha! I've made a comeback :) lol. I wrote 773 words, last sentence is: I go to Google Maps and turn on the location services, but an alert pops up on the computer that I am not allowed to do that at school.

    25. I got 870, last sentence: “I am Jen.” The girl explained, who was with Dakota.

    26. Oh, sorry, Savannah, I didn't see this. This is my first time doing CampNaNo and I did regular NaNo in the fall for the first time. You should totally do one of them! It's a lot of fun and I love that GoTeenWriters hosts Word Wars to help everyone with it.

    27. My laptop decided to take a break from functionality halfway through the word war, and then took its sweet old time powering back on, so my word count isn't nearly as good as I'd like it--330, last line: "“Come over here,” Kaela calls, motioning towards us--or towards Caledon."

      Delete
    28. Finished with 111 words. I probably could have written more, but I hit a bit of a wall while writing one of the scenes. Anyways, my last sentence was: “Hi.” Throwing another rock into the quietly trickling water, she took a deep breath, and her voice quavered as tears threatened to spill anew, “Why does everything have to be this way?” ~Savannah

      Delete
    29. Nanowrimo is basically just a month devoted to you writing a novel. You try to write a 50k novel in a month. It is just fun to try with lots of other folks around the world doing it as well.

It is kinda what started me writing, since I started I could not resist doing everyone that they hosted.

Okay, so I have never actually participated in a word war and have a question. Do you just write random words that come to mind, or do you actually do a story or something? I haven't done one yet because I didn't know the answer to that question so ya. :P

    2. Hi Ash.
Most people just work on their current manuscrip or project, but you can also write a quick story that just pops in your mind. The point of a word was is to write as many words as you can in the given time. The next war i from :50 to :05 if you want to join in.
