As you might have seen yesterday, this weekend I'm hosting a "Get it done" weekend here on the blog. It was super fun to see all the different goals you guys have and all the support and encouragement you offered each other.

If you didn't join us yesterday, you're still welcome to hop in! This is a come-and-go kind of event. Here's how it works:

1. You pick what you want to accomplish between now and next Monday. Maybe it's a certain number of hours that you edit your book, or maybe it's a number of words you want to write. Totally your choice.

2. Leave a comment sharing with us what you hope to get done. And then periodically check back in and tell us what kind of progress you're making.

That's it! I'll be giving away ebooks daily, so be sure to check back the next day to see if you won!

Today I'm giving away 2k to 10k, an ebook I stumbled upon and loved. As a warning, there's a little language in there, so if that bothers you, this isn't the book for you. I haven't adopted everything she does into my writing routine, but I found her experience fascinating.

What's your favorite part of the writing process? The brainstorming? The first chapter? Edits?

  1. I'm hoping to get at least 6,000 words down by the 7th - I'm currently working on my second draft! I'm hoping to get the whole draft finished by the end of the year but this will hopefully give me a push to carry on writing :) once again, thanks for these posts!

  2. Brainstorming. Writing is hard! ; D

  3. I wish I could tell you what my favorite part is, but sadly I don't think I've ever made it past the brainstorming/writing the first chapter part. I WILL be moving past that with my current WIP!

  4. I have two favorite parts. One is writing the scenes I've had in my head since I started the book and FINALLY get to put on paper, and the other is getting to know the characters.

  5. Brainstorming is easily one of my favorite parts too. It's all fun and games at that stage :)

  6. The first chapter is my absolute favorite part. Or maybe titling. I love creating titles. :)

Yesterday I finished my compilation of literary agents, so today I'm looking to get to 5,000! I've got some stuff to do this morning, but I'll be back this afternoon.

    Good luck, everyone!

  7. Ooo, I'm not sure what my favorite part would be! I love brainstorming, but then I also love the actual writing part of things, and edits are fun too :). All that said, I don't think I really have a favorite part!
Anyways, I'm almost a quarter done with my first draft, so I THINK I'll be able to finish it before Tuesday. ~Savannah P.

  8. I really like that part of writing when you just come up with the idea and everything is falling into place and it's just the best thing you have ever come up with and it's just perfect and flawless. So, pretty much just when the idea first hits me and reality has not set in yet. :P
I also like finishing. It's often sad, but it is so satisfying too.
Yesterday I wrote 2k words in my novel, leaving me at 55k words total. I am hoping to write about 2k again today. That's going to be hard too, because we have people coming over later. But I have done it before, so it's all good.

  9. My favorite part of the writing process? It would have to he writing. Lol that sounds crazy..but I just love putting down words and finding the perfect ones, and telling a good story :)

  10. its a tie. plotting and fleshing out characters. i absolutely love adding in all the little twists at the end and sorting out where everything needs to go. i also love fleshing out characters. mainly putting them in some random scene in my head and having my subconscious do all the work as i sit back and watch. that is the best!

today i'm hoping to flesh out all the scenes in the second act of my WIP. hopefully it will be easier than yesterday since now i have more ideas and events to work with.

  11. I'm brainstorming my next story idea and plotting it out. Here's one idea I had:

When a lab experiment goes wrong, a moody scientist must unite with his worst rival to stop a virus outbreak from wiping out life on earth.

    I know it's a bit cheesy, but it's a start.

    1. My favorite part of the writing process would be the first and last chapters. The excitement at the beginning and (hopefully) the satisfaction at the end is unparalleled, for me.

    2. Ah! So get you with writing that (hopefully) satisfying ending, Jonathan. :)

  12. So far my progress towards my goal has been going smoothly. Yesterday I wrote the first 2k of my novella, leaving me with at most 18k left, and I also worked on my research paper. Hopefully I'll get in even more writing today. As for my favorite part of the writing process, well...I love all of it, but my favorite part is probably rewriting. My first drafts start out as a complete mess so even though rewriting is a long and difficult process, I really enjoy seeing my story change and improve before my eyes.

    1. I love the editing process too, Ana! In fact, it has become a problem as I constantly want to rewrite and edit my work as I go along. Now if I really want to rewrite a scene or make a few changes when I am supposed to be writing, I'll just email myself a note of it for when I am actually at that beloved editing stage.
      :)

    2. Kindred spirits, Leorah! Luckily, I don't have that problem, but that's a great idea for fixing it. One problem I do have is knowing when to stop. I scrap lots of words and rewrite my novels completely several times during the process but it's difficult to know when to step back and say it's ready for submission. I've never actually been at that stage with a novel yet (I'm getting there!), but I've been there many times with short stories. It's so hard to let a piece go!

  13. My favorite part of the writing process has to be writing the ending. I have my ending in mind and outlined on paper before I even start the initial beginning, just because I like having that clear end goal to work towards. Throughout the entire writing process, I keep that end goal in front of me and it keeps me pushing on. Once I finally get to it, it is so clear to me and I am so excited to get it all out that it comes out like magic. I barely have to think.
So fun reading everyone else's favorite parts...

  14. My goal is to edit my first three chapters (I need to do more showing then telling) and maybe get another two chapters down. I have two main characters: one is visually impaired (loosely modeled after myself) and it's harder than I would have expected to write the way I see the world. My other character is outgoing, bubbly and very... physical. But her chapters are almost entirely dialogue…

  15. Writing the first first first draft is my absolute favorite part of the writing process. :) I'm hoping to get the edits back SOON from those who are reading my book, as well as write at least two more chapters of the sequel I'm playing around with.

  16. My favorite part of writing is the first draft when all the ideas are new and exciting.

So far I have written my paper and edited on page toward my goal. I have a ways to go and, because of something that came up, I can only pray that I manage to finish.

  17. I can agree with almost all of you!! But I think my absolute favorite part is writing the beginning of the book, and also the ending of each chapter. I just love writing the suspense and cliffhangers that leave you wanting more!! Plus, I'm sure we could all fill a book with those fun first chapters that we never extend on. ^_^

  18. I'm pretty sure my favorite part changes all the time, but if I can pick a non-concrete favorite part, it would be when I write that one scene that just clicks. Where I finally really know what's going on and feel it, too. It's an amazing feeling. :)

I forgot to check back in yesterday, but so far I've planned out week one of my class! :) Got some great ideas for what to teach, too. Yay!

  19. My favorite part of the writing process is that moment when things click and you just know you have something good. That makes all the sweat and tears worth it

  20. My favorite part is either finding a pin on Pinterest that fits PERFECTLY into your scene/finding the PERFECT picture of that character, or writing that one scene that gives you shivers.

  21. I have only about a thousand more words to go to reach my goal of 5,000! How's everyone else doing?

    1. Well, I'm moving along slowly, but it's not as bad as it could be :). I'm working on chapter 4, and I'm not entirely sure how long the story is going to be. I'm hoping to at least reach chapter 8 by the time Get It Done Weekend is over, but finishing the whole first draft would be preferable. Whatever happens, I'll be pleased with my progress.
Congratulations on being so close to reaching your goal, Linea! ~Savannah P.

    3. Well, I'm wrapping up the day with over 4,100 words. See y'all on Monday!

  22. I like beginning the writing.... and of course the very end when it is all done!

  23. My favorite part of the writing process... Hmm. You know, I really love developing characters throughout my book/story. Right now I'm nearing the ending of my first draft, and I'm finding that the ending is really fun! But I also love the emotional scenes and dialogue too. :)

  24. I think my favorite part of the writing process is the actual writing part. It's a very difficult part, but so rewarding as you learn more about the plot and characters and your story grows with each draft. So I think that's my favorite part; ^_^

  25. My favorite part of the writing process is in the beginning when I get to brainstorm and feel as if the story is golden. Developing the idea and outlining, getting more creative juices for the story nonstop. I love that entire part. Probably one of the main reasons I write. But the other parts are fun too, just tiring.

  27. I think that my favorite part will be being done and finally letting people read my book :D
I got quite a bit of editing done yesterday and today and I'm making progress on my schoolwork goal :)

  28. Favorite part? Just coming up with creative ideas. Making worlds and giving characters quircks and well... character.

  29. I didn't get to join in yesterday, because I had a very good friend over who I haven't seen in over a year. My goal for this weekend is to get the next chapter in my edits done. I know it isn't much, but I'll be lucky to get ten words written because Monday I started a college algebra class and am flailing, so that completely sucked 99% of my writing time. I'm still hoping to squeeze out the next chapter though. :)

My favorite part about writing... Probably meeting and getting to know my characters, though I'm also enjoying foreshadowing. :)

  30. I've finished half of my chapter! :D Hopefully, I'll be able to do the rest tomorrow.

I think my favorite part of the writing process is either the brainstorming or the first draft because in both ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. The writing and the brainstorming are just /fun/, and I'm skipping along with the whole story just waiting for me to write it (until I hit writer's block of course, but meh, let's not talk about that :p). I don't see the plotholes the size of spaceships, the cranky characters who don't make sense, or the million bazillion clunky sentences and writing errors. I'm just creating a world and it's a blast. :D

  31. I would say my favorite part would be the spark... when the excitement of the idea is new and strong and you find the reason you love the idea so that later you can remember it if you are having trouble. But I also love crafting words and finishing... I don't know...

Also, I'm pretty close to my goal. I can finish this thing! (I hope.)

  32. My favorite part about writing is being able to organize my thoughts and put them down on paper. I also like to write because it brings stories to life, and I love being able to share stories with others :)
